Notizen: Abstract: The non-Aβ component of Alzheimer's disease amyloid precursor protein (NACP) is predominantly a neuron-specific presynaptic protein that may play a central role in neurodegeneration because NACP fragments are found in Alzheimer's disease amyloid and a mutation in the NACP gene is associated with familial Parkinson's disease. In addition, NACP may play an important role during synaptogenesis and CNS development. To understand better the patterns of NACP expression during development, we analyzed the levels of this protein as well as the levels of another synaptic protein (synaptophysin) by ribonuclease protection assay, western blotting, and immunocytochemistry in fetal, juvenile, and adult mouse brain. From embryonic day 12 to 15, there was a slight increase, which was then followed by a more dramatic increase at later time points. Immunocytochemical staining for NACP increases throughout these stages as well. Although NACP appeared early in CNS development, synaptophysin levels started to rise at a later stage. These findings support the contention that NACP might be important for CNS development. Furthermore, the cytosolic component of NACP precedes the particulate component in development, indicating that a redistribution of the protein to the membrane fraction may be important for events later in neuronal development and in synaptogenesis.

Notizen: A discrete system of coupled waves (with nonanalytic dispersion relation) is derived in the context of the spectral transform theory for the Ablowitz–Ladik spectral problem (discrete version of the Zakharov–Shabat system). This 3-wave evolution problem is a discrete version of the stimulated Raman scattering equations, and it is shown to be solvable for arbitrary boundary value of the two radiation fields and initial value of the medium state. The spectral transform is constructed on the basis of the ∂-approach. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The near ultraviolet (UV) and visible photodissociation dynamics of BrCl have been explored using the technique of photofragment ion imaging at 26 wavelengths in the range 235 to 540 nm. Ion images of the Cl(2P3/2), Cl(2P1/2), Br(2P3/2) and Br(2P1/2) photofragments reveal both the angular distributions of photofragment velocities (characterized by anisotropy parameters, β) and which of the four possible photofragment pathways are active at different wavelengths. The anisotropy parameters show extensive variation both with wavelength and for the different fragmentation channels, and these variations are interpreted largely in terms of excitations to the A 3Π(1), B 3Π(0+), C 1Π(1) and D(0+) states as the wavelength is reduced. At wavelengths between 235 and 262 nm, the Br(2P1/2)+Cl(2P3/2) channel is dominant and β=2.0±0.1 at 235 nm, characteristic of a parallel parent transition (ΔΩ=0) and supporting previous assignments of the absorption in this wavelength range being due to the D(0+)–X 1Σ+(0+) transition. A minor channel forms Cl(2P1/2)+Br(2P3/2) with an anisotropy indicative of the involvement of an underlying perpendicular absorption (ΔΩ=±1) to a state with Ω=1. Br(2P3/2)+Cl(2P3/2) and Br(2P1/2)+Cl(2P1/2) fragmentation channels are not observed. Excitation in the wavelength range 320 nm to 410 nm results in Cl(2P3/2)+Br(2P3/2) products with an anisotropy parameter of β=−1.0±0.1, consistent with assignment of the strong parent absorption to the C 1Π(1)–X 1Σ+(0+) transition. For photolysis wavelengths longer than 400 nm, the Cl(2P1/2)/Cl(2P3/2) branching ratio increases [with β∼1.0 to 1.4 for the Cl(2P1/2)], β for Cl(2P3/2) becomes less negative (and for λ≥450 nm, values lie in the range 0 to −0.2) and Br(2P3/2) β-parameters also increase. No formation of Br(2P1/2) is observed. These observations are, in part, consistent with absorption via the B 3Π(0+)–X 1Σ+(0+) transition, although the nonlimiting β-parameter values imply a significant perpendicular contribution to the absorption spectrum. The measured anisotropy parameters for λ≥410 nm are interpreted in terms of excitation both to an Ω=0 state [B 3Π(0+)] and an Ω=1 state [A 3Π(1) or C 1Π(1)], together with transfer of dissociating flux between states during the dissociation. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract Here we present the high-level operators of the Mechanical Analysis Module, which is a software architecture dedicated to a better integration of the structural analysis phase within an integrated Computer-Aided Design environment. This generic module is independent of the mechanical analysis method used, and takes place in a distributed software architecture of an integrated design environment. The paper shows that the mechanical operators defined are split among geometric and mechanical treatments in order to enforce this distributed architecture. Thus, the interface between the geometric treatments and the mechanical analysis environment shows the adequacy of the boolean operators when used with mechanical analysis treatments. However, this is demonstrated for a restricted domain of the mechanical analysis, and open ended questions still exist as to when the geometry of the models is diversified. Also, requirements for new geometric treatments and extensions of the current geometric representation are listed.

Notizen: Abstract Consider a Markov system of functions whose linear span is dense with respect to the uniform norm in the space of the continuous functions on a finite interval. Gaussian rules are those which correctly integrate as many successive basis functions as possible with the lesser number of nodes. In this paper we provide a simple proof of the fact that such rules converge for all bounded Riemann-Stieltjes integrable functions. The proposed proof is also valid for any sequence of quadrature rules with positive coefficients which converge for the basis functions. Taking the nodes of the Gaussian rules as nodes for Lagrange interpolation, we give a sufficient condition for the convergence in L 2-norm of such processes for bounded Riemann-Stieltjes integrable functions.

Notizen: Summary We compared CSF and serum levels, and the CSF/serum ratio of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E), measured by HPLC, in 34 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 47 controls. CSF and serum vitamin E levels were correlate. The mean CSF and serum vitamin E levels, and the CSF/serum ratio of PD patients did not differ significantly between the groups. There was no influence of antiparkinsonian therapy on CSF vitamin E levels. CSF vitamin E levels did not correlate with age, age at onset, duration of the disease, scores of the Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale of the Hoehn and Yahr staging in the PD group. These results suggest that CSF vitamin E concentrations are unrelated with the risk for PD.

Notizen: Abstract This study determines ash, K, Ca, Na, Mg, Fe, Cu, Pb, and Zn content in musts and wines of the DOC Tacoronte-Acentejo (Tenerife, Canary Islands) from two consecutive harvests. Samples were treated with HNO3 and H2O2. Na and K were determined by flame photometry and the remaining metals by air/acetilene flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Significant differences were observed in Na, Ca and Mg contents between both harvests, possibly due to climate conditions.

Notizen: Abstract  Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that results in gradual deterioration of cognitive function and severe alteration of personality. Degeneration of neurons in the nucleus basalis Meynert, the origin of the major cholinergic projections to the neocortex, occurs early in the course of the disease, and is correlated with the cognitive decline. This link between cholinergic dysfunction in the basal-cortical system and cognitive deficits has focused scientific efforts on developing tools to elucidate the neurobiological role of the cholinergic system in cognition and to develop therapeutic interventions in the disorder. An important step in understanding the mechanisms underlying cognitive dysfunction has been the development of in vivo rodent models that mimic some of the features of Alzheimer’s disease. Acute excitotoxic or immunotoxic lesions of the nucleus basalis in rodents have revealed a role of the basal-cortical system in attention, learning and memory. More recent advances in developing mouse gene technology offer newer models to systematically examine the underlying neuropathological cascade leading to dysfunctions in mnemonic processing. Using in vivo rodent models, several cholinergic enhancement strategies have been tested and proven to be effective in alleviating lesion-induced cognitive deficits, including neuropharmacological approaches (acetylcholinesterase inhibitors), neurotrophic factor administration (nerve growth factor), and transplantation of cholinergic-enriched fetal grafts. Successful results have also been obtained using ex vivo gene transfer to deliver nerve growth factor or acetylcholine to compromised regions of the basal-cortical system. Gene therapy may be of particular interest for clinical applications, because this approach provides a method for topographically restricted and selective delivery of therapeutic genes and their products to afflicted areas of the brain. Advanced techniques in molecular biology (e.g., exogenous regulatable gene transfer) and newly developed tools of modern neuroscience (e.g., neural precursor cells) will be important contributions for deciphering the biological bases of neuronal degeneration and for refining therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer’s disease.
