    Notes: La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 thin films were simultaneously deposited by pulsed laser ablation on silicon (Si) and LaAlO3 (LAO) substrates. Films on Si were polycrystalline while those on LAO were (100) epitaxial with an in-plane correlation length of ≈10 nm. The magnetization and magnetoresistance behavior of these two films were significantly different. Both films exhibit antiferromagnetic–ferromagnetic transitions—at different temperatures [180 K (LAO); 230 K (Si)]—and their magnetic moments at 10 K were significantly different (Si—0.0035 emu; LAO—0.0022 emu). However, both films showed significant high field slope in magnetization at 10 K. Significant fractions of both films remain antiferromagnetic at low temperatures and hence net susceptibilities, dependent on the direction of the applied magnetic field, are different for the epitaxial (LAO) and randomly oriented polycrystalline (Si) films. The magnetoresistance peak, corresponding to the semiconductor–metal transition is observed at 170 and 130 K for the epitaxial (LAO) and polycrystalline (Si) films, respectively. Moreover, their resistance values are two orders of magnitude different (Si—MØhms; LAO—KOhms). These properties can be interpreted in terms of the major role of grain boundaries in determining the scattering as well as possible differences in O2 stoichiometry. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We simulate H2 adsorbed within zeolite Na-A. We use a block Lanczos procedure to generate the first several (9) rotational eigenstates of the molecule, which is modeled as a rigid, quantum rotor with an anisotropic polarizability and quadrupole moment. The rotor interacts with Na cations and O anions; interaction parameters are chosen semiempirically and the truncation of electrostatic fields is handled with a switching function. A Monte Carlo proceedure is used to sample a set of states based on the canonical distribution. Potential energy surfaces, favorable adsorbtion sites, and distributions of barriers to rotation are analyzed. Separation factors for ortho–parahydrogen are calculated; at low temperatures, these are controlled by the ease of rotational tunneling through barriers. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A laser light source for high-resolution near-field optics applications with an output power exceeding 1 mW (104 times the power from previous sources) and small (300 nm square to less than 50 nm square) output beam size is demonstrated. The very-small-aperture laser (VSAL) tremendously expands the range of applications possible with near-field optics and increases the signal-to-noise ratios and data rates obtained in existing applications. As an example, 250-nm-diam marks corresponding to 7.5 Gb/in.2 storage density have been recorded and read back in reflection and transmission on a rewritable phase-change disk at 24 Mb/s with a 250-nm-square aperture VSAL. VSALs potentially enable data storage densities of over 500 Gb/in.2 (up to 100 times today's magnetic or optical storage densities). © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new instrument has been developed to measure the compressional attenuation and Young's modulus of rocks in the seismic-frequency range. This instrument has been calibrated over a frequency range from 1 mHz to 100 Hz at a strain of about 2.5×10−6. The attenuation of the sample is calculated from a relative phase measurement between a low-attenuation reference material and the sample. The Young's modulus of the sample is calculated from the displacement amplitude of the sample relative to the displacement amplitude of the reference material. Use of this instrument has allowed the investigation of the dependence of a rock's attenuation and Young's modulus on its fluid content. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We describe a nonequilibrium phase transition in a geometrically confined charge-stabilized colloidal suspension. The equilibrium configuration for the spheres in this system is a two-layer square lattice, equivalent to two layers of a body-centered cubic (bcc) crystal. After electrophoretic shear melting, the suspension rapidly crystallizes to a buckled single-layer triangular lattice. This well-ordered solid phase subsequently undergoes a martensitic phase transition back to the two-layer square lattice. We use high resolution digital video microscopy to follow the emergence and evolution of order during these phase transitions. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Use of direct-push sampling tools fur rapid investigations of contaminated sites has proliferated in the past several years. A direct-push device, referred to as a ground water sampling profiler, was recently developed at the University of Waterloo. This tool differs from oilier direct-push tools in that point samples are collected at multiple depths in the same hole without retrieving, decontaminating, and re-driving the tool alter each sampling event. The collection of point samples, rather than samples from a longer screened interval, allows an exceptional level of detail to be generated about the vertical distribution of contamination from each hole. The benefits of acquiring this level of detail arc contingent on minimization of vertical cross contamination of samples caused by drag down from high concentration zones into underlying low concentration zones. In a detailed study of chlorinated solvent plumes in sandy aquifers, we found that drag down using the profiler is minimal or non-detectable even when the tool is driven through high concentration zones of dissolved chlorinated solvent contamination. Chlorinated solvent concentrations, primarily PCE and TCE at or below a detection limit of 1 μg/L, were obtained directly beneath plumes with maximum concentrations up to thousands of μg/L. Minimal drag down, on the order of a few μg/L to 20 μg/L, may have been observed below chlorinated solvent concentrations of several tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of μg/L. Drag down through DNAPL zones was not evaluated.

    Notes: Arrays of unpumped wells can be used as discontinuous permeable walls in which each well serves both as a means to focus ground water flow into the well for treatment and as a container either for permeable reactive media which directly destroy dissolved ground water contaminants or for devices or materials which release amendments that support in situ degradation of contaminants within the aquifer downgradient of the wells. This paper addresses the use of wells for amendment delivery, recognizing the potential utility of amendments such as electron acceptors (e.g., oxygen nitrate), electron donors (primary substrates), and microbial nutrients for stimulating bioremediation, and the potential utility of oxidizers, reducers, etc., for controlled abiotic degradation. Depending on its rate and constraints, the remedial reaction may occur within the well and/or downgradient. For complete remediation of ground water passing through the well array, the total flux of amendment released must meet or exceed the total flux demand imposed by the plume. When there are constraints on the released concentration of amendment (relative to the demand), close spacing of the wells may be required. If the flux balance allows wider spacing, it is likely that limited downgradient spreading of the released amendment will then be the primary constraint on interwell spacing. Divergent flow from the wells, roughly two times the well diameter, provides the bulk of downgradient spreading and constrains maximum well spacing in the absence of significant lateral dispersion. Stronger lateral dispersion enhances the spreading of amendment, thereby increasing the lateral impact of each well, which allows for wider well spacing.
