Notes: The histopathological variants of malignant melanoma include the common type (lentigo maligna, superficial spreading melanoma, nodular melanoma, acrolentiginous melanoma), spindle cell, desmoplastic, balloon cell, pleomorphic (fibrohistiocytic), myxoid, small cell melanoma and malignant blue nevus. Recently, signet-ring cell melanoma was introduced as an additional cytologic variant. We describe a 72-year-old patient with a primary signet-ring cell melanoma of the skin located on the upper arm. Histopathologic examination disclosed a melanocytic tumor extending from the epidermis to the deep reticular dermis. Numerous pleomorphic tumor cells showed large, intracellular vacuoles and oval to spindle-shaped nuclei at their periphery. Milotic figures and multinucleated melanocytes were also observed. Some of the signet-ring cells exhibited cytoplasmatic periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positivity. Immunohistochemistry showed positive reaction of the tumor cells for S-100, HMB-45 protein and vimentin, confirming their melanocytic differentiation. Tumor cells were negative for cytokeratins, epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The signet-ring cell melanoma disclosed an invasion to Clark Level IV and tumor thickness of 2.2 mm. Signet-ring cell melanoma is a rare morphologic variant of melanoma. Its recognition is important for differentiation from other tumors featuring signet ring cells.

Description / Table of Contents: Aim: To investigate the distribution of Laminin in experimental microvascular surgery. Material and methods: Autografts (4 mm) of the left common carotid artery in 20 Wistar rats were harvested after 4 weeks. The specimens were investigated immunohistochemically for the demonstration and distribution of Laminin. Results: The demonstration and distribution pattern of Laminin was a function of the accuracy of each single suture. In the intima, the organisation and amount of Laminin was directed to the lumen and dependent from the distance and vitality of the vessel segments’ cells. The media had in its axis direction the lowest reparative potency to regenerate the continuity break. The adventitia formed a thick cuff around the anastomosis, which was circularly grown through with Laminin-positive vasa vasorum. The marked myointimal hyperplasia in the area around the anastomosis and in the entire autograft was constituted of Laminin-positive extracellular matrix. Conclusions: Our results support the demand for a careful and atraumatic suture technique in microvascular surgery.

Notes: Abstract: The reaction 12C(e,e'Δ0)11C →12C(e,e'pπ−)11C was investigated at the Mainz Microtron MAMI in a triple coincidence measurement using the three spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration. The good missing mass resolution of σm= 0.27 MeV/c2 allowed to select the events belonging to the ground state of 11C. Cutting on these events the excitation energy spectra of 12CΔ0 show evidence for two peaks of about 4 MeV width (FWHM) at 282 MeV and 296 MeV with a significance of about 4.5 standard deviations. The peaks are interpreted in a simple weak coupling model as bound Δ0 states in 12CΔ0.

Notes: Abstract Six adult patients suffering from acute hepatic failure and with a high urgent status underwent heterotopic auxiliary liver transplantation. In four of these patients, the portal vein of the liver graft was arterialized in order to leave the native liver and the liver hilum untouched and to be able to place the liver graft wherever space was available in the abdomen. The arterial blood flow via the portal vein was tapered by the width of the anastomosis. Two patients died, one of sepsis on postoperative day 17 (POD), the other after 3 months due to a severe CMV pneumonia. There were no technically related deaths. The native liver showed early regeneration in all cases. In one patient, the auxiliary graft was removed 6 weeks after transplantation. Four weeks later, he had to undergo orthotopic retransplantation due to a recurrent fulminant failure of the recovered native liver. This patient is alive more than 1 year after the operation. We conclude that heterotopic auxiliary liver transplantation with portal vein arterialization is a suitable approach to bridging the recovery of the acute failing native liver.

Notes: Abstract This study investigates the incorporation of bone grafts used in maxillofacial surgery by means of [18F]fluoride ion and positron emission tomography (PET). It considers patients who received pedicle grafts for mandibular reconstruction or onlay grafts for alveolar ridge augmentation. Dynamic PET images and arterialized venous blood samples were obtained within a 1-h period after i.v. injection of [18F-]fluoride. Assuming a three-compartment model and applying multilinear least squares fitting, bone blood flow (K 1) and fluoride influx (K mlf) were determined. Additionally Patlak plot analysis was used to calculate fluoride influx (K pat). In cervical vertebral bodies as the reference region, mean values for flow ofK 1 = 0.1162±0.0396 ml/min/ml and influx ofK mlf = 0.0508±0.0193 andK pat = 0.0385±0.0102 ml/min/ml were found. Essentially these figures are comparable with physiological values in animal and man reported in the literature. Early after surgery a significant increase in flow and influx compared to vertebral bodies was observed in the regions of osteosyntheses between grafts used for reconstruction and recipient bone (K 1 = 0.2181,K mlf = 0.1000 andK pat = 0.0666 ml/min/ml) and in onlay grafts (K 1 = 0.2842,K mlf = 0.1637 andK pat = 0.0827 ml/min/ml). At the same time pedicle grafts showed a significant increase in flow but not in influx (K 1 = 0.2042,K mlf = 0.0774 andK pat = 0.0529 ml/ min/ml). FurthermoreK pat was significantly lower in pedicle grafts than in onlay grafts. In follow-up studies a significant decrease in flow occurred in pedicle grafts and the regions of osteosyntheses. Moreover the latter showed a significant decrease inK mlf as well. It is concluded that [18F-] PET depicted increased blood flow and osteoblastic activity in onlay grafts and regions of osteosyntheses, indicating bone repair in the graft and adjacent host bone early after surgery. For the regions of osteosyntheses the decrease in both parameters corresponded to uncomplicated healing. The lack of increased influx, although flow was increased in pedicle grafts, most likely indicates that some necrosis occurred in these grafts despite patency of anastomoses. It may be concluded that [18F-] PET provides further insight into the biology of graft incorporation.

Notes: Abstract Common oat (Avena sativa L.) cultivars and breeding lines grown in Western Europe and North America were tested against twelve Erysiphe graminis f. sp. avenae mildew isolates collected in Germany and Denmark. These isolates were selected for their ability to produce differential response patterns permitting characterization of five oat mildew resistance (OMR) groups. From a total of 259 cultivars and lines tested 173 accessions showed susceptible responses, 48 accessions were characterized by susceptible or intermediate responses and 38 accessions revealed isolate-specific resistance response patterns. Eight cultivars and lines had resistance patterns of OMR group 1, six cultivars of OMR group 2, and eleven cultivars of OMR group 3. Two cultivars, each possessed resistance patterns corresponding to OMR groups 1 + 3 and 2 + 3 in combination, respectively. Three cultivars exhibited the response pattern of OMR group 3 in association with an additional unknown resistance. Eight cultivars and lines showed a resistance response pattern not yet detected in the documented OMR groups.

Notes: Ferroelectric liquid crystalline elastomers (FLCEs) form a novel class of materials, in which the properties of macroscopically oriented ferroelectric liquid crystals can be combined with those of elastomers. The (direct and the inverse) piezoelectric effect in these systems is measured and analyzed on a molecular level. Backed also by x-ray measurements, a model is suggested that interprets the observed piezoelectricity caused by electrically or mechanically induced motions of smectic layers which are inclined with respect to the sample surface. The strength of the observed electromechanical effects compares well with (or exceeds) that of classical piezoelectric materials like barium titanate, lead zirconate titanate or poled polymers like poly(vinylidene fluoride), making FLCEs an interesting candidate for applications in microsystems technology. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
