Notes: Purpose: To demonstrate HRCT findings and their therapeutic relevance in suspected congenital hearing disorders. Material and Methods: It was checked in 96 young patients if HRCT findings of the temporal bone could explain functional findings. Furthermore, the therapeutic consequences were noted. Results: Normal CT and normal functional findings were obtained in 49 temporal bones (TB). In conductive hearing loss (41 TB), dysplasias of the conducting apparatus (37 TB) and inflammatory changes (3 TB) were found. Combined hearing loss (18 TB) was clarified completely or partially in half the cases. There were 22 dysplasias of the inner ear, 3 dysplasias of the middle ear, 1 abandoned examination (2 TB), and 55 normal CT findings in senorineural hearing disorders (82 TB). 1 retardate had a malformation of the inner ear and, contralaterally, inflammatory middle ear. In cases of vestibular disorders (24 TB), 14 malformations of the inner ear were detected. An indication for an operation was given in 23 TB. In 22 TB, it was contraindicated. The CT was one preliminary examination to a cochlea implant in 19 patients. The therapy was carried on with hearing devices in the other patients. Conclusion: HRCT is an important method in diagnosis and therapeutic planning of suspected malformations of the temporal bone.

Notes: Summary Critical illness polyneuropathy (CIP) may occur in up to 70% of septic patients and multiple organ failure patients. Typical clinical signs of CIP are the difficulty to wean the patient from artificial respiration, a symmetrical flaccid quadriparesis/-plegia that is more pronounced in the distal parts of the limbs, reduced or absent deep tendon reflexes, and muscular atrophy. This article describes and discusses the clinical and electrophysiological features and clinical outcomes, physiopathological concepts, therapeutic implications, and the complex differential diagnosis of CIP from a neurological point of view, focusing on disorders of the nervous system and myopathic abnormalities. The data available in the literature were reviewed and compared to our own findings in order to deduce a clinical definition of CIP. It is a particular aim of this work to emphasize the crucial importance of electrophysiological investigation and monitoring in the classification of the nature and extent of neuromuscular disturbances in critically ill patients.

Notes: Abstract: We report the even parity J =4,5 autoionizing spectra of calcium below the 3d threshold, investigated by two-step laser excitation from the 3d4s metastables through the 3d4p , intermediate states and subsequent optogalvanic detection. The 3d4s states are populated by electronic collisions in a d.c. glow discharge sustained in a Ca heat-pipe. More than a hundred resonant transitions have been measured with an accuracy of for the narrow ones using standard laser calibration techniques. The high lying levels are assigned to all expected autoionizing series. Moreover, some levels are observed. The theoretical interpretation is achieved by a combination of the nearly ab initio eigenchannel R-matrix and multichannel quantum-defect (MQDT) methods as well as by an empirical determination of the MQDT parameters in the phase-shifted formulation. Theoretical energy level positions and excitation profiles are compared with the experimental data confirming the identification of the observed structures. Strong mixing between series is found, while the ones do not couple with the series. Further insight into the strong channel mixing in the studied energy range is provided by a comprehensive review of the excitation profiles in the vicinity of the 4p5p perturber as obtained from a number of intermediate levels used in the present and in earlier experiments. Systematic electron correlation trends for series of , and are discussed.

Notes: Abstract: We report a theoretical approach based on a combination of jj-coupled eigenchannel R-matrix and multichannel quantum-defect (MQDT) methods suitable to determine Raman couplings, dynamical Stark shifts and threshold-resolved ionization rates in heavy alkaline-earth atoms. These atomic parameters are needed to analyze the partial photoelectron spectra and the ionization dynamics of multiphoton processes in a perturbative treatment of the field-atom interaction to the lowest non-vanishing order of perturbation theory. Numerical results are presented in barium, pertaining to the experimental level scheme used by Wang, Chen and Elliott [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 2416 (1996)] to study coherent control through two-color interfering paths. Particular emphasis is given on the comparison of length and velocity formulations for the electric dipole operator.
