Notes: Abstract The influence of a 4-week unaccustomed average 103% mileage increase (ITV, increase in training volume;n = 8; average baseline mileage 85.9 km · week−1, final mileage 174.6km · week−1) on performance and neuromuscular excitability (NME) was tested in experienced distance runners and controlled 1 year later by a 4-week unaccustomed average 152% increase in tempo-pace and interval-runs (ITI, increase in training intensity;n = 9; baseline 9 km · week−1, final 22.7 km · week−1) with an average total mileage of 61.7 km · week−1 (week 1) to 84.7 km · week−1 (week 4). Seven athletes participated in ITV as well as in ITI. During incremental treadmill test performance at a lactate concentration of 2 mmol · l−1 (2 LP) increased, and at 4 mmol · l−1 (4 LP) performance did not change, whereas total running distance (TD) during the incremental test decreased in ITV compared to an increase in 2 LP, 4 LP and TD during ITI which may indicate that there was an ITV-related overtraining. The NME of the reference muscles vastus medialis and rectus femoris deteriorated in ITV (day 28 compared to 0) compared to constant values during ITI, reflecting an ITV-related overload of neuromuscular structures.

Notes: Ferroelectric liquid crystalline elastomers (FLCEs) form a novel class of materials, in which the properties of macroscopically oriented ferroelectric liquid crystals can be combined with those of elastomers. The (direct and the inverse) piezoelectric effect in these systems is measured and analyzed on a molecular level. Backed also by x-ray measurements, a model is suggested that interprets the observed piezoelectricity caused by electrically or mechanically induced motions of smectic layers which are inclined with respect to the sample surface. The strength of the observed electromechanical effects compares well with (or exceeds) that of classical piezoelectric materials like barium titanate, lead zirconate titanate or poled polymers like poly(vinylidene fluoride), making FLCEs an interesting candidate for applications in microsystems technology. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The clinical efficacy and tolerability of the topical receptor-selective retinoid tazarotene in the treatment of congenital ichthyoses was investigated. Twelve consecutive patients with different forms of congenital ichthyosis were enrolled in an open, non-randomized, intraindividually controlled, half-side pilot study. Diagnoses were X-linked recessive ichthyosis, non-erythrodermic autosomal recessive lamellar ichthyosis, autosomal dominant ichthyosis vulgaris and ichthyosis bullosa of Siemens (IBS). Tazarotene 0.05% gel was applied unilaterally daily on a defined body area measuring 10% of the body surface area. The contralateral side was treated with an ointment containing 10% urea. After 14 days, application frequency was reduced to three times a week, and stopped after another 2 weeks. The follow-up period was 3 months. Reduction in scaling and roughness was used to assess the clinical response in the tazarotene-treated area compared with the control area. Clinical and laboratory assessments were performed every 14 days during the trial. Unilateral improvement in favour of the tazarotene-treated side was observed in nine of 12 patients (75%). Four patients (33%) achieved an excellent response and four (33%) achieved a good response. No therapeutic effect was seen in patients with IBS. The remission persisted during the reduction phase and after discontinuation for up to 2 months. Local irritation in three patients was the only side-effect detectable. Short-term topical application of tazarotene 0.05% gel is a very effective and well-tolerated treatment modality in different forms of congenital ichthyoses and may be an alternative to systemic retinoid therapy.

Notes: The heat capacity of crystalline zinc tris (thiourea) sulphate, has been measured in the range from 220 to 500 K by differential scanning calorimetry, and was found to obey the relationship Cp(T)=2.76×10−3 T+0.366 J g−1 K−1. Thermal expansion data have been measured in the range from 150 to 473 K. From these data, the principal thermal expansion coefficients were found to be α1=6.41×10−5 K−1, α2=4.52×10−5 K−1, and α3=−4.32×10−6 K−1. The thermal conductivity tensor of this orthorhombic crystal was calculated from values of the thermal diffusivity in the directions normal to the (100), (010), and (001) crystal planes by the laser flash method. The thermal conductivity coefficients at 295 K are k1=0.27 W m−1 K−1, k2=0.34 W m−1 K−1, and k3=0.54 W m−1 K−1. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract More than 100 years have passed since Weismann first recognized the role of germ cells in the continuity of a species. Today, it remains unclear how a germ cell is initially set aside from somatic cells and how it chooses its unique developmental path. In this review, we address various aspects of germ cell development in Drosophila, such as germ cell determination, germ cell migration, gonad formation, sex determination, and gametogenesis. Many aspects of germ cell development, including the morphology of germ cells, their migratory behavior, as well as the processes of gonad formation and gametogenesis, show striking similarities among organisms. Considering the conservation of factors that regulate somatic development, it is likely that some aspects of germ cell development are shared not only on a morphological but also on the molecular level between Drosophila and other organisms.

Notes: We have fabricated a two-dimensional photonic band structure based on macroporous silicon with individual gaps for both polarizations in the infrared region between 250 and 500 cm−1 (20–40 μm). A square lattice of circular air rods with a lattice constant of 8 μm was etched 340 μm deep in an n-type silicon substrate by electrochemical pore formation in hydrofluoric acid. The transmission spectra between 50 and 650 cm−1 were in good agreement with the theoretical calculated structure. The pore formation technique should allow the fabrication of photonic lattices with a complete two-dimensional band gap in the middle and near infrared. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have fabricated a two-dimensional photonic band structure based on macroporous silicon with a gap common to both polarizations and centered at 5 μm. A triangular lattice of circular air rods with a lattice constant of 2.3 μm was etched 75 μm deep in an n-type silicon substrate by electrochemical pore formation in hydrofluoric acid. The porous layer was then micromechanically structured in such a way that 200 μm thick free-standing bars of porous material were left over on the silicon substrate. These bars were then used for measuring the transmission of the photonic lattice. The results showed an excellent agreement with the theoretically calculated structure. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The mode behavior of symmetric air-post vertical cavity surface emitting lasers is investigated using a unique tandem triple-pass Fabry–Perot interferometer as well as standard characterization techniques. A series of high resolution spectra taken at various current levels demonstrates relaxation oscillations of the fundamental mode and the lifting of mode degeneracy by crystal birefringence and structural anisotropy. Near field images and L–I measurements identify the discontinuous jumps in mode number and polarization. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
