Notes: Conclusions As usual, more questions are raised by the facts and figures presented in this report than answered. Some general features appear, nevertheless, unquestionable. Austria shows a rather stable, balanced picture either the distribution of research activities by major fields, or the main publication channels, or the extent of international cooperation, or the major cooperating partners are concerned. In the four ex-socialist countries great efforts are made not just to maintain the level of research activities of the previous years but also to conform to the European/world standards. Scientific communities of these countries have had to find some “compensations mechanisms” to counterbalance the detrimental effects of the countries economic problems. One possible with more developed countries increasing extent of international cooperation with more developed countries (predominantly with Germany and USA). Signs of exhaustion of this source of compensation can be observed in Hungary, and this can be a warning signal for other countries of the area, too. One of the most intriguing questions raised by the results of this study is about the demographic and migrational processes within the scientific community underlying the observed publication trends and patterns. Learning more about these factors may take us closer to find the proper policy implications of the observed phenomena.

Notes: Abstract Comparative assessment of scientometric indicators is greatly hindered by the different standards valid in different science fields and subfields. Indicators concerning to different fields can be compared only after first gauging them against a properly chosen reference standard, and their relative standing can then be compared. Methods of selecting reference standards and scaling procedures are surveyed in this study, and examples are given to their practical application.

Notes: Abstract A serious shortcoming of bibliometric studies based on theSocial Sciences Citation Index is the lack of a universally applicable subject classification scheme as individual papers are concerned. Moreover, the selective coverage of more than thousand scientific journals per annum proved to be an insuperable obstacle in the delimitation of social science subject areas. Subject classification of papers on the basis of assigning journals to subject categories (like those found in the various supplements of ISI databases) works well in case of fully covered and highly specialised journals in the social sciences, too, but fails for multidisciplinary and selectively covered journals. This study presents the results of an item-by-item subject classification approach, where assignment is based on the analysis of the subject categories of reference literature. This analysis extends the results of an earlier study by the authors on the possibility of delimiting subfields in the hard and life sciences based on reference analysis. The assignment proved also reliable for a considerable share of literature in the social sciences. Due to the peculiarities of the database this share is lower in the SSCI than that in the SCI. Although an iterated application of the procedure is expected to increase the number of classifiable publications, it is suggested that in the sociated sciences the method should be used in combination with other means of subject assignment.

Notes: Abstract Scientometric indicators are treated according to dimensional approaches. One, two, three, dimensions and multidimensional characteristics are revealed graphically for giving a panoramic view on the publication activity and citation impact of different countries.

Notes: Abstract Scientific cooperation of the EU countries with other developed regions, with Economies in Transition and with Developing Countries is analysed as it is reflected in the bibliometric indicators of internationally co-authored publications. The citation attractivity of these publications shows that international scientific collaboration is particularly advantageous for less advanced countries, but also highly industrialised countries benefit from it.
