Notes: Abstract  If activation of the p53 gene is involved in the progression or metastasis of colon cancer, it may affect the angiogenic phenotype in vivo. To verify this hypothesis, we studied the correlation between p53 accumulation and expression of thrombospondin-1 (TSP1) in colon cancer specimens. Levels of TSP1 gene expression were estimated by Northern blotting in 65 colon cancers. Accumulation of p53 and the distribution of TSP1 protein were evaluated immunohistochemically. Various levels of TSP1 gene expression were seen in colon cancers, while p53 accumulation was confirmed in 42 of the 65 colon cancers. The level of TSP1 gene expression demonstrated a significant inverse correlation with p53 accumulation in colon cancer. Colon cancer cells expressed TSP1 protein and p53 accumulation reciprocally in the same nests. These results suggest that alterations in the tumour suppressor gene p53 may inhibit TSP1 expression in colon cancer.

Notes: Abstract The gloss of wood is a unique texture compared to that of other materials. To express it quantitatively, two digital-image analyses were performed. One method was multiresolutional contrast analysis, which was the new method developed in this study. The other method was fractal image analysis. Twenty-four specimens, including solid woods, wood-plastic composites (WPCs), printed grains, and granites, were prepared. Digital images of specimens were obtained in five sizes and in two illuminant directions (perpendicular and parallel to the grain). The multiresolutional contrast values of perpendicular illuminated images were calculated and compared among specimens. The result of this quantitative analysis was that the gloss of wood was characterized by bright spots in a relatively small area. Using fractal analysis, the fractal dimension of a digital image was used as an index of brightness changes, not for expressing the self-similarity. These indices showed results similar to those of the multiresolutional contrast analysis.

Notes: Summary Presented is the case of a 63-year-old woman, with a 30-year history of rheumatoid arthritis, whose hip was completely destroyed and accompanied with enlargement of the iliopsoas bursa. Preoperative diagnosis was confirmed by computed tomography, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and arthrography. She was treated by resection of the iliopsoas bursa and total prosthetic replacement of the hip joint. The pathogenesis is uncertain. In the literature, enlargement of the iliopsoas bursa with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, pigmented villonodular synovitis, and synovial chondromatosis had been reported. Nevertheless, a correct preoperative diagnosis of the enlargement of the iliopsoas bursa is very difficult. MR imaging with enhanced Gadolinium-DTPA (Gd-DTPA) is proposed as the most useful examination for preoperative diagnosis.

Notes: Abstract The initial appearance and the development of Leydig cells (LCs), the sites of steroid hormone production in the testis, were investigated ultrastructurally during testicular differentiation in the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica. In addition, the effects of a single injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG; 5 IU g body weight-1) on histological changes of the testes and serum 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) were examined at various stages (15–18, 20–23, 26–29, 32–35, 38–41 and 46–50 cm body length (BL)) of testicular differentiation. Testicular differentiation was morphologically characterized by the development of loose connective tissue on the medial side in animals 18–29 cm in BL. Ultrastructurally, LCs were first identified in the loose connective tissue of the testis of the 23 cm fish. In the testes of fish over 32 cm, clusters of LCs were distributed throughout the interstitial region accompanying the increase in number of spermatogonia. In fish larger than 32 cm, spermatogenesis was induced by administration of HCG; serum 11-KT levels were also raised. On the other hand, there was no effect on spermatogenesis or serum 11-KT levels in fish less than 29 cm, or in the controls. These result suggests that morphological differentiation of LCs occurs in testis of the 23 cm eel, and subsequently, the testes of eels of BL more than 32 cm acquire the capability to produce steroid hormones.
