    Notes: Ni/Cu(100) films were prepared by thermal deposition at room temperature (RT) and 170 K low temperature (LT) separately to study the influence of substrate temperature on the spin reorientation. The critical thickness of the LT grown films is observed to be about 1 ML smaller than that of the RT films. Though both types of films show similar tetragonal distortion and chemical composition, their morphology differs dramatically: the island density of the LT films is significantly higher than that of the RT films. We use this to interpret the different magnetic behavior between the RT and LT films. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The thermal deposition of Co onto Cu(111) results in three-dimensional island growth and a face-centered-cubic-hexagonal-close-packed stacking fault, which hinders a complete antiferromagnetic coupling in Co/Cu(111) superlattices. We report that Co/Cu(111) films can be grown with good layer-by-layer morphology and significantly less stacking faults by pulsed laser deposition. We show that a complete antiferromagnetic coupling can be achieved in the pulsed laser deposited Co/Cu trilayer. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Fresh split chicken breasts were injected with 5% sodium acid pyrophosphate (SAPP), 5% sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), 2.5% Genu pectin (GENU), or the combination of 5% SAPP with 2.5% GENU and 5% STPP with 2.5% GENU. Calcium lactate (0.1 M) solution was sprayed on the surface of chicken marinated in pectin. Marinated samples were stored at 4C for 7 days to evaluate changes in the psychrotrophic bacterial count and quality. STPP injected chicken breast had highest (α=0.05) marinade pickup, net weight increase, cook yield and moisture content. SAPP injected chicken had intermediate marinade pickup, but lowest retention in the muscle among all treatments. Marinades with pectin or pectin combined with phosphate had lower pickup but higher marinade retention compared with SAPP injected breasts. The water holding capacity (WHC) of STPP and GENU injected cooked chicken breast was higher than SAPP injected samples or control. All marinated chicken breasts had significantly lower shear force than noninjected control. Neither phosphate nor pectin had a significant influence on microbial activity of marinated chicken.

    Notes: The effect of time of cut-up and needle injection of phosphate marinades into poultry was evaluated. Poultry were collected after the chiller, cut and needle injected immediately with phosphate containing marinade, or needle injected after 5 h. Whole birds were aged 5 h before cut-up and needle injection as a control. The percentage weight gain and the percentage net weight increase was less for poultry which was cut or needle injected without aging, but varied depending on marinade composition. Cook yield was not affected by time of cut-up or needle injection of marinade. No differences in tenderness and juiciness between treatments were detected by untrained or trained panelists (p〈0.05).

    Notes: The effects of doping Ni into the Pt spacer layer on the polar Kerr rotation θk and perpendicular anisotropy Ku of the sputtered Pt/Co multilayers have been investigated. A similar tendency of the variations of Ku and θk with the doping concentration of Ni specifies that they arise from the same source, the spin-orbit coupling. An enhanced magneto-optical effect appears in Pt1−xNix/Co multilayers at x=0.08 and can be attributed to variation of the off-diagonal elements of the conductivity tensor. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Involvement of T-lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis is well established. The question arises as to whether not only tissue infiltrating but also circulating T-lymphocytes are involved in the disease process. Therefore we sought to determine whether T-lymphocytes from patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis show abnormal biological behavior to the proinflammatory chemokine interleukin 8 (IL-8) in vitro as studied by their chemotactic activity. In addition, the expression of T-cell activation markers such as HLA-DR and interleukin 2 receptor (IL-2R) were analysed with FACS-technique. In all, 25 patients with psoriasis (13 patients with severe psoriasis and 12 patients with mild psoriasis) and 11 patients with atopic dermatitis were investigated. For comparison, T-lymphocytes from 14 healthy controls were tested equally. The results show that T-cell chemotactic responses to IL-8 were significantly decreased in patients with severe psoriasis as compared to healthy controls. T-cells from patients with atopic dermatitis demonstrated an even more pronounced decrease in chemotactic response as compared to T-cells from psoriasis patients or healthy controls. In contrast, increased expression of activation markers HLA-DR and IL-2R were demonstrated in circulating T-cells from patients with severe psoriasis and atopic dermatitis in comparison to healthy controls. It can be concluded that circulating T-cells in patients with severe psoriasis and atopic dermatitis show a decreased in vitro chemotactic response to IL-8. Furthermore, the in vivo phenotypic activation state of T-lymphocytes in these patients seemed to be associated with their decreased in vitro functional capacity.

    Notes: Peeled shrimp (Peneaus spp.) and channel catfish (Ictalutus punctatus) fillets were either mixed with commercial lemon pepper marinade and vacuum tumbled at 4°C for 30 min or soaked in 2% tripolyphosphate solution overnight. Dielectric constant and loss factor of marinated seafood and the penetration depth of microwaves were functions of temperature. When cooking temperature increased, the dielectric constant increased, while the loss factor and depth of penetration decreased. Because of the large variation in thermal conductivity measured for individual shrimp, no correlation between thermal conductivity and temperature was found. At constant temperature, thermal conductivity of 2% sodium tripolyphosphate-treated shrimp was higher than that of both marinated and nonmarinated shrimp as a result of higher moisture content. However, no difference in thermal conductivity was found between marinated and nonmarinated shrimp or catfish.
