Notes: Abstract LetG= $$\{ g_1 ,g_2 , \cdots ,g_m \} \cup \{ t_1 ,t_2 , \cdots ,t_n \} $$ be a list of items with nonnegative weights assigned andk≥2 be an integer. The objective is to find an assignment of the items to the bins such that allg i (called kernels) are assigned to different bins, such that no bin contains more thank items, and such that the maximum weight assigned to any bin becomes minimum. In this paper, we first prove that the problem is NP-complete in the strong sense for anyk≥3. As heuristic for this problem, we use a modified version of the famous LPT-algorithm for multiprocessor scheduling, and we show a worst case bound of 3/2–1/2m fork=3.

Notes: Abstract We report the first interferometric observations of the dynamics of electron-ion cavitation of relativistically self-focused intense 4 TW, 400 fs laser pulse in a He gas jet. The electron density in a channel 1 mm long and 30 μm in diameter drops by a factor of approximately 10 from the maximum value of ∼8×1019 cm−3. A high radial velocity of the plasma expansion, ∼3.8×108 cm/s, corresponding to an ion energy of about 300 keV, is observed. The total energy of fast ions is estimated to be 6% of the laser pulse energy. The high-velocity radial plasma expulsion is explained by a charge separation due to the strong ponderomotive force. This experiment demonstrates a new possibility for direct transmission of a significant portion of the energy of a laser pulse to ions.

Notes: The anti-neoplastic agents trimethylamine-carboxyborane and its corresponding methyl ester have successfully been radiolabeled with carbon-14 in the carboxyl group. Using the radiolabeled agents we have shown that their L1210 leukemia cell uptake appeared to be by a passive process and binding of the agents to DNA, RNA and protein over 24 h was minimal.

Notes: The thiosemicarbazones and their related metal complexes were shown to be potent anti-inflammatory agents in rodents at 8 mg kg-1. They were effective in blocking induced edema and endotoxic shock while blocking both local and central pain processes. The ability of the agents to function as anti-inflammatory agents is multifold. First, Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNFα) and Interleukin-1 (IL-1) release was markedly reduced by the agents. Second, high-affinity receptor binding on fibroblasts of TNFα and IL-1 was significantly inhibited. Third, cellular events, e.g. lysosomal enzymes of specific cells, such as macrophages, were inhibited and prostaglandin cyclo-oxygenase and leukotriene 5′-lipoxygenase enzymic synthetic rates were significantly reduced, which should cause an overall reduction of the inflammatory process.
