Notizen: Abstract There have been a few studies of the arterial anatomy of the human carpus and several studies have been made of the arterial arches and recurrent arteries in the carpal region. However, further investigation is required. We describe here the results of a study of the vascular anatomy of arterioles, 60 μm in minimum diameter, among the extraosseous vessels in 183 human hands. The study was performed by investigating stereoscopic arteriographs. Six arterial arches and six recurrent arteries were investigated. We compared the frequencies of carpal feeding arteries of Japanese with those of Americans (the Americans being of white, oriental, and black origin), and studied the differences from an anatomical standpoint. It has been reported that in Americans, there are only two recurrent arteries on the palmar side, in the ulnar and radial positions, and that the frequencies cannot be compared with those found in other studies, because of differences in methodology. However, we believe that, irrespective of the differences in methodology in the studies reviewed and in our study, it can be assumed that Japanese have a higher frequency of recurrent arteries than Americans.

Notizen: Abstract  β-Amylase deficiency in various cultivars of rice was examined at the molecular level. Using an antibody against β-amylase purified from germinating seeds of rice, we were able to demonstrate the expression and organization of the β-amylase gene in normal and deficient cultivars. Although β-amylase is a starch-hydrolyzing enzyme, as is α-amylase, the β-amylase protein/gene is expressed differently from the α-amylase protein/gene; i.e. (1) β-amylase is synthesized only in aleurone cells, (2) the enzyme production in the embryo-less half-seeds is not under hormonal control. We identified some cultivars of rice that are deficient for β-amylase activity. We present new evidence that synthesis is blocked at the level of mRNA synthesis in the deficient cultivars. The usefulness of β-amylase as a crop trait is also discussed.

    Thema: Informatik
Notizen: Abstract A fully automatic interpretation of an awake electroencephalogram (EEG) has been developed. Automatic integrative EEG interpretation consists of four main parts: quantitative EEG interpretation, EEG report making, preprocessing of EEG data, and adaptable EEG interpretation. Automatic integrative EEG interpretation reveals essentially the same findings as those of an electroencephalographer (EEGer), and is therefore applicable in clinical situations as an additional tool for the EEGer. The method has been developed through collaboration between the engineering field (Saga University) and the medical field (Kyoto University). This work can be understood as a realization of artificial intelligence. The procedure for this realization of artificial intelligence will also be applicable in other fields of systems control.
