Notes: Abstract To examine the relationship of Ito cells to postnecrotic liver fibrosis, liver specimens, obtained at autopsy from 17 patients with acute massive necrosis (AMN) and acute submassive hepatic necrosis (ASMN), were examined immunohistochemically. In normal adult livers, Ito cells positive for α-smooth muscle actin isoform (ASMA) were rarely seen, scattered along hepatic sinusoids. In contrast, in AMN the Ito cells in necrotic areas became strongly positive for ASMA. They were swollen with elongated cytoplasmic processes along collapsed sinusoidal walls. Around these ASMA-positive Ito cells, there were numerous infiltrated macrophages and lymphocytes present. There was no significant alteration of fibroblasts in the portal tracts. In the middle and late stages of ASMN, the spindle-shaped ASMA-positive Ito cells formed a continuous cellular network. New fibre formation was predominantly around them. In this immediate postnecrotic fibrosis, ASMA-positive stromal cells of Ito cell origin were distributed irregularly and were closely associated with reticulin and newly-formed collagen fibres. Regenerative nodules were surrounded by dense layers of ASMA-positive stromal cells. Throughout the stages of ASMN, portal fibroblasts remained negative for ASMA. We believe that Ito cells in necrotic areas show myofibroblastic transformation and play a central role in the postnecrotic liver fibrosis. Portal fibroblasts play no significant part in this type of fibrosis.

Notes: Abstract The effects of vitamin A, selenium and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) on the growth of a human tongue cancer cell line were examined in monolayer cell cultures. A colony-forming assay showed a 50% reduction in the survival rate of the cell line at a concentration of 2.6 μg/ml selenium, 60 I μg/ml vitamin A and/or 38 μg/ml BHT. Relatively low concentrations of selenium markedly inhibited glucose consumption. Flow cytometric analysis with both fluorescein-isothiocyanate-labelled bromodeoxyuridine monoclonal antibody and propidium iodide demonstrated an increase in S-phase fractions 1 day after the addition of selenium, increased GO/G1 phase fractions in the presence of vitamin A and increased G2M phase fractions when BHT was added. These results suggest that these compounds inhibit DNA synthesis of in vitro human tongue cancer cells by different mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, a new variable-dimension simplicial algorithm is developed to compute economic equilibria on the Cartesian product of then-dimensional unit price simplexS n and them-dimensional production activity spaceR + m . The algorithm differs from other algorithms in the number of directions in which the algorithm may leave the starting point. More precisely, the algorithm has 2 n+m+1 –2 rays to leave the starting point, whereas the other algorithms have at most 2 m (n+1) rays. The path of points generated by the algorithm can be interpreted as a globally and universally convergent price and production adjustment process. The process as well as the convergence condition are much more natural and economically meaningful than the adjustment processes obtained by other simplicial algorithms. Furthermore, we apply the algorithm to economies with linear production, economies with constant returns to scale, and economies with increasing returns to scale.

Notes: Abstract The distribution of laminar nerve endings that contained immunoreactive calretinin was examined in the laryngeal mucosa of the adult rat. In whole-mount preparations, the immunoreactive laminar endings were distributed in the supraglottic region but not in the subglottic region. The laminar endings that arose from thick nerve fibers with or without swellings were identified as corpuscles with many variform terminal arborizations. They appeared to be located at the interface between the epithelium and the subepithelial connective tissue. The terminals were scattered under the basal lamina of the epithelium, and some of them were located within the epithelial layer. Immunoelectron microscopy revealed that both sub- and intraepithelial immunoreactive terminals that were filled with mitochondria were partly or totally ensheathed by Schwann cell processes. The denervation experiments, in which the superior laryngeal nerve was cut unilaterally or bilaterally, suggested that the laminar endings originate from the superior laryngeal nerve with strict ipsilateral innervation. The laminar endings might be associated with detection of changes in pressure in the laryngeal cavity or chemical stimuli.
