    Notes: Abstract. We used Ussing chamber measurements and whole-cell recordings to characterize a chloride conductance in rat lingual epithelium. Niflumic acid (NFA) and flufenamic acid (FFA), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory aromatic compounds known to inhibit Cl− conductances in other tissues, reduced transepithelial short-circuit current (I sc ) in the intact dorsal anterior rat tongue epithelium when added from the serosal side, and reduced whole-cell currents in rat fungiform taste cells. In both Ussing chamber and patch-clamp experiments, the effect of NFA was mimicked by replacement of bath Cl− with methanesulfonate or gluconate. In low Cl− bath solution, the effect of NFA on whole-cell current was reduced. Replacement of bath Ca2+ with Ba2+ reduced the whole-cell Cl− current. We conclude that a Ca2+-activated Cl− conductance is likely present in the basolateral membrane of the rat lingual epithelium, and is present in the taste receptor cells from fungiform papillae. Further experiments will be required to identify the role of this conductance in taste transduction.

    Notes: In this study, Multimode boiling on a straight pin is theoretically investigated. Axial steady-state temperature distributions along the fin are numerically evaluated, as well as their linear stability characteristics. When film and transition boiling coexist on the fin surface, or only the transition boiling covers the entire fin, the operation remains stable only if the fin length is less than some critical value. When transition and nucleate boiling coexist on a fin, or the fin is in the three-mode boiling (film + transition + nucleate boiling), the entry of nucleate boiling at the fin tip stabilizes the boiling process. This study on base heat flow and fin efficiency with the stability criteria also suggests a new fin design methodology.

    Notes: Abstract  Technetium Tc-99m disofenin cholescintigraphy (CS) and ultrasonography (US) are two major clinical methods used in differentiating biliary atresia (BA) from neonatal jaundice. To compare the diagnostic utility of these two modalities, 66 patients with neonatal cholestasis (15 BA, 3 choledochal cyst (CC), 32 neonatal hepatitis, 13 prolonged jaundice, 2 total parenteral nutrition, and 1 sepsis) underwent Tc-99m disofenin CS and US. The diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of CS in differentiating BA from other forms of neonatal jaundice was 100%, 87.5%, and 90.5%, respectively, and for US 86.7%, 77.1%, and 79.4%, respectively. Tc-99m disofenin CS after premedication with phenobarbital and cholestyramine is a convenient and reliable method of differentiating BA from neonatal hepatitis, with a diagnostic accuracy superior to that of US. However, US is the initial imaging procedure of choice in patients presenting with jaundice to rule out anatomic anomalies such as CC.
