Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary. Intramuscular lipomas are rare, benign unencapsulated tumors. They are also called infiltrating lipomas because of their infiltrative growth pattern which, deeply localized, seizes the skeleton muscle. The only obvious symptom is a palpable mass. Microscopically, monovacular fat tissue shows up between the muscle fiber. In extreme cases the preexisting muscle can be totally replaced by fat tissue. A precise pathohistological examination is needed to avoid the mistaken diagnosis of a well-differentiated liposarcoma. Late diagnosis, the extent and the localization of the tumor often do not allow for an R0 resection and influence the postoperative recurrence rates, which lie between 3 and 62 %. R0 resections are not desirable when postoperative severe loss of function can be expected. Malfunctions will slowly take place and can greatly be compensated, in contrast to a radical procedure with immediate loss of function.

Notes: Abstract The histoblot immunostaining technique for locating and characterizing amyloidogenic proteins was used to obtain information about the relationship of cerebral ischemia/hypoxia to the accumulation of amyloid β protein (Aβ). We investigated brains of 131 subjects (ages 25–94 years, mean 72 years). Three distribution patterns of Aβ immunoreactivity were identified: (1) colocalization with diffuse and neuritic plaques of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and aging; (2) diffuse punctate deposits in the cerebral cortex in association with small vessel cerebral vascular disease; and (3) cerebral cortical accumulation localized to arterial boundary zones and other regions susceptible to ischemic/hypoxic injury designated "stress-induced deposits" (SID). SID were not identified in tissue sections by immunohistochemical, Congo red or Bielschowsky silver techniques; no histological abnormalities were present in adjacent formalin-fixed tissue sections. SID occurred in subjects with histories of cerebral ischemia, and severe orthostatic hypotension. There was also an association with aging in general and with the incidence of neuritic plaques specifically. These latter findings are consistent with the hypothesis that brain ischemia/hypoxia plays a role in the pathogenesis of AD.

Notes: Abstract The interdependence of the predicted in vitro residual enzyme activity (PRA), as deduced from the complete genotypes of 64 hyperphenylalaninaemic patients, and parameters for diagnosis of hyperphenylalaninaemic disorders, the fluctuation of the phyenlylalanine (Phe) values during treatment, long-term dietary control during treatment, and a parameter for the outcome of therapy (IQ) was investigated by correlation analysis. A highly significant correlation was found between the PRA and diagnostic parameters, as well as the fluctuation of the Phe values during treatment. Significant correlations were also observed between the parameter describing the fluctuation of the Phe values and the IQ, as well as between the quality of dietary control and IQ. The PRA is a valuable tool for the differential diagnosis of hyperphenylalaninaemic disorders and for the prediction of one aspect of the course of the disease which is related to the intellectual outcome of therapy. The quality of dietary control was independent of the genotype, indicating that the outcome of therapy can be successfully manipulated in spite of the genetic make-up.

Notes: Abstract The experimental results on the photochromic and mechanical properties of coatings containing 1,3-dihydro-1,3,3-trimethylspiro[2H-indole-2,3′-(3H)-naphth(2,1-b)(1,4) oxazine] (SO) derived from 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS), bisphenol A (BPA) and 1-methylimidazole (MI) by sol-gel processing are presented. It is shown that heat treatment temperature is a conflicting factor to the photochromic intensity (Δ A 0), photostability and abrasion resistance of the photochromic coatings. With increasing densification temperature the matrix rigidity increases leading to a decrease of Δ A 0 and at the same time an enhancement of both abrasion resistance and photostability, the optimum heat treatment temperature is 110°C under our experimental conditions. By the use of certain additives, e.g., fluorosilanes (FAS), not only Δ A 0 but also the photostability and the abrasion resistance of the photochromic coatings have been further improved.

Notes: Abstract Organic-inorganic hybrid materials synthesized via sol-gel processing are excellent solid matrices for photochromic dyes like spirooxazine, and the photochromic performance can be further enhanced by introducing suitable additives. This work describes the effects of additives on the photochromic intensity (Δ A 0), decolouration rate (k) and photostability of spirooxazine in sol-gel derived organic-inorganic hybrid matrices. They include fluoro-alkylsilane (FAS), bisphenol A (BPA) and methyl-imidazole (MI). FAS enhances both Δ A 0 and photostability, but has little effect on k. The higher the content of BPA, the higher the Δ A 0 and the higher the photostability, but the lower the k. The effect of MI on Δ A 0 and k is not so considerable as that of BPA and is a little complicated, while significant improvement in photostability is achieved by the addition of MI at an optimum concentration with the presence of BPA at a higher content.
