Notes: As the first article of a two-part series, the purpose of this paper is to examine the functional factors that contribute to automobile accident occurrence and to model the causation structure in the form of a fault-tree. The fault-tree model provides an intuitive framework for qualitatively decomposing possible pathways to accident occurrence. Fault-tree analysis also provides a statistical representation of how interacting driver, vehicle, and environmental factors contribute to the likelihood of automobile accident occurrence. The application of this model facilitates pinpointing those factors that most contribute to accident causation and subsequently enables the identification and comparison of potential crash avoidance technologies.

Notes: Abstract. The efficiency of GUS (β-Glucuronidase) gene expression in embryogenic callus and young leaflets of mature and seedling palm after microprojectile bombardment with five constructs (pEmuGN, pAHC25, pAct1-F4, pGH24 and pBARGUS) was evaluated to identify the most suitable promoter(s) to use in transformation attempts in oil palm. Expression of the GUS gene driven by the Emu, Ubi1, Act1, 35S or Adh1 was assayed, both histochemically and fluorometrically, from a total of 200 plates of tissues in eight independent experiments two days after bombardment. A completely randomized experimental design was used for each experiment, and the data analysed by ANOVA and Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The expression level of GUS driven by the Emu or Ubi1 promoters was significantly higher than that of the Act1, 35S and Adh1 promoters in many experiments, and that of the Adh1 was significantly lower than those of the other four promoters. Both histochemical and fluorometric data indicate that in embryogenic callus, the expression of the Emu promoter was higher than that of the Ubi1 whereas in young leaflets from mature palm the Ubi1 expression was stronger. The performances of the five promoters were also tested in tobacco callus using a fluorometric GUS assay. The activity of the 35S promoter was highest, and significantly different from that of all the other promoters except the Emu, and that of the Act1 promoter was lowest. These results indicate that either the Ubi1 or Emu promoter should facilitate the expression of desired genes in oil palm and aid in development of an efficient stable transformation system.

Notes: Summary A steady two-dimensional mixed convection flow of viscous incompressible micropolar fluid past an isothermal horizotal heated plate with uniform free stream and variable spin-gradient viscosity is considered. With appropriate transformations the boundary layer equations are transformed into nonsimilar equations appropriate for three distinct regimes, namely, the forced convection regime, the free convection regime and the mixed convection regime. Solutions of the governing equations for these regimes are obtained by an implicit finite difference scheme developed for the present problem. Results are obtained for the pertinent parameters, such as the buoyancy parameter, ζ in the range of 0 to 10 and the vortex viscosity parameters, Δ=0.0, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0 and 10.0 for fluid with Prandtl number Pr=0.7 and are presented in terms of local shear-stress and the local rate of heat transfer. Effects of these parameters are also shown graphically on the velocity, temperature and the couple stress distributions. From the present analysis, it is observed that both the momentum boundary layer and the thermal boundary layer increase due to an increase in the vortex viscosity of the fluid.

Notes: Abstract Existence theorems of generalized variational inequalities and generalized complementarity problems are obtained in topological vector spaces for hemi-continuous (respectively, strong hemi-continuous) operators. Fixed point theorems are also given in Hilbert spaces for set-valued operators T which are upper semicontinuous such that I - T are hemi-continuous (respectively, strong hemi-continuous).

Notes: Abstract A number of varieties of rice, a halophyte, Sesuvium portulacastrum and a glycophyte, Phaseolus vulgaris were grown in culture solution containing a range of concentrations of NaCl. Growth of the plants and internal sodium concentrations of the roots were measured after 14 days. The electrical potential difference (PD) between the external solution and the vacuole of the outer cells of the root was also measured. This enabled the driving force on sodium at the cell membranes to be calculated using the Nernst equation. It was found that Sesuvium and those varieties of rice that had previously shown salt tolerance generated relatively negative PDs and large driving forces tending to exclude sodium from the root. This suggested that a simple measurement of PD for plants grown in a given concentration of NaCl over a given period of time would provide a fairly rapid screening method for salt tolerance in rice and possibly other species also. Notes: Abstract The concentration of rare earths and other elements have been determined in the bed sediment samples of Karnafuli estuarine zone in the Bay of Bengal by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). The samples and the standards soil-5, soil-7, coal fly ash and pond sediment were prepared and simultaneously irradiated for short and long time at the TRIGA Mark-II research reactor facility of Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Savar, Dhaka. The maximum themal neutron flux was of the order of 1013 n·cm−2·s−1. After irradiation the radioactivity of the product nuclides was measured by using a high resolution high purity germanium detector system. Analysis of γ-ray spectra and quantitative analysis of the elemental concentration were done via the software GANAAS, it has been possible to determine the concentration level of 27 elements including the rare earths La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy and Yb and uranium and thorium.

Notes: Abstract Vibrio cholerae O1 and V. cholerae non-O1 strains isolated from environmental samples collected in São Paulo, Brazil, during cholera epidemics and pre-epidemic periods were examined for the presence of toxin genes. V. cholerae O1 strains isolated from clinical samples in Peru and Mexico, and V. cholerae O139 strains from India were also examined for the presence of ctx (cholera toxin gene) and zot (zonula occludens toxin gene) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A modified DNA-extraction method applied in this study yielded satisfactory recovery of genomic DNA from vibrios. Results showed that strains of V. cholerae O1 isolated during the preepidemic period were ctx -/zot - whereas strains isolated during the epidemic were ctx +/zot +. All V. cholerae non-O1 strains tested in the study were ctx -/zot -, whereas all V. cholerae O139 strains were ctx +/zot +. Rapid detection of the virulence genes (ctx and zot) can be achieved by PCR and this can serve as an important tool in the epidemiology and surveillance of V. cholerae.
