Notes: Abstract In glomectomized rats with denervated sinus carotid reflexogenic zones as compared with sham-operated controls, the diabetogenic action of streptozotocin was manifested by more pronounced changes in several hematological parameters, including marked elevation of blood glucose and reductions of oxygen consumption, the respiratory quotient, blood hemoglobin concentration, the hematocrit, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration. These findings attest that the carotid sinus receptors play an important functional role in producing the symptom complex of diabetes mellitus.

Notes: Abstract In contrast to normal environmental conditions (normal temperature and gaseous composition of the atmosphere), regular exposure to hypoxia or cold for 3 weeks after carotid glomectomy does not increase blood glucose and causes no anemia or depression of gaseous and energy metabolism. Diabetogenic effect of streptozotocin after a previous hypoxic or cold exposure is associated with lower hyperglycemia; the time course of hematological and gaseous metabolism parameters after glomectomy depends on the effects of changed gaseous environment or temperature.

Notes: Abstract Rats with low resistance to acute altitude hypoxia did not differ from those with high resistance in the erythron parameters recorded under normal environmental conditions. After a bilateral carotid glomectomy, significant falls in the red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin were recorded only in the group with low resistance to acute hypoxia, although the “altitude” resistance was decreased to similar degrees in the two groups.
