    Notes: When building parts in a stereolithography apparatus (SLA), the user is faced with many decisions regarding how the part will be built. The quality of the build can be controlled by the user by changing one of several build style variables, including part orientation, cross sectional layer thickness, and laser hatch density. A user will probably have preferences for the part build (i.e. accuracy or speed), but may not understand how to vary the build style variables to produce the desired results. A method based on response surface methodology and multiobjective decision support is described in this paper for relating build goals to the build style variables to provide support for making build style decisions. The method is applied to the build style of a circuit breaker handle. Results indicate the method's usefulness in supporting build style decisions. Expected behaviors of the goals with respect to the variables were confirmed and quantified. Additionally, response surface methodology was shown to be accurate and effective in modeling the relationships among variables and goals.

    Notes: Abstract A new type of insecticidal parasporal body is reported from Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kenyae (H4a4c) isolated from maize dust in Mexico. This parasporal body is spherical to oblong and composed of three inclusions, one spherical, one cuboidal, and one bipyramidal. Together, these contain four major proteins, three in the Cryl size class (138, 133, and 131 kDa), and one in the CryII size class (65 kDa). Monoclonal antibodies that recognize CryIB reacted with the 138-kDa protein, but those that recognize CryIA(a) or CryIA(a) and CryIA(b) did not react with any of the proteins. This isolate was more toxic (LC50= 96 ng cm−2 diet) to first instars of the diamond back moth, Plutella xylostella, than the HD1 isolate of B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki (LC50= 182 ng cm−2 diet).

    Notes: Abstract How two species interact during and after colonization influences which of them will be present in each stage of succession. In the tolerance model of ecological succession in a patchy environment, empty patches can be colonized by any species, but the ability to tolerate reduced resource levels determines which species will exclude the other. Here, we analyze a meta-population model of the possible roles of competition in colonization and succession, using non-linear Markov chains as a mathematical framework. Different kinds of competition affect the final equilibrial, abundances of the species involved in qualitatively different ways. An explicit criterion is given to determine which interactions have stronger effects on the final equilibrial levels of the weaker, species. Precise conditions are stated for the co-existence of both species. Both species are more likely to co-exist in the presence of an intermediate disturbance frequency.

    Notes: Abstract Background: Studies suggest that the anal sphincter can be preserved in some patients with distal rectal adenocarcinoma (DRA), but this has not been validated in any prospective multi-institutional trial. Methods: To test the hypothesis that the anal sphincter can be preserved in some patients with DRA, the Cancer and Leukemia Group B and collaborators reviewed 177 patients who had T1/T2 adenocarcinomas ≤ 4 cm in diameter, which encompassed ≤ 40% of bowel wall circumference, and were ≤ 10 cm from the dentate line. Of the 177 patients, 59 patients who were eligible for the study had T1 adenocarcinomas and received no further treatment; 51 eligible T2 patients received external beam irradiation (5400 cGY/30 fractions 5 days/week) and 5-fluorouracil (500 mg/m2 IV d1–3, d29–31) after local excision. Results: At 48 months median follow-up, 6-year survival and failure-free survival rates of the eligible patients are 85% and 78% respectively. Three patients died of unrelated disease. Two patients were treated for second primary colorectal tumors; both remain disease free (NED). Another eight patients died of disease, four with distant recurrence only. One T1 patient is alive with distant disease. Two T1 and seven T2 patients experienced isolated local recurrences; all underwent salvage abdominoperineal resection (APR). After APR, one T1 and four of seven T2 patients were NED at the time of last visit (2–7 years). One T1 patient died of local and distant disease. Three of seven T2 patients died with distant disease. Conclusions: We conclude that sphincter preservation can be achieved with excellent cancer control without initial sacrifice of anal function in most patients. After local recurrence, salvage resection appears effective, but longer follow-up time of local and distant disease-free survival is advised before extrapolation to patients with T3 primaries.

    Notes: Abstract Given a stationary time seriesX and another stationary time seriesY (with a different power spectral density), we describe an algorithm for constructing a stationary time series Z that contains exactly the same values asX permuted in an order such that the power spectral density ofZ closely resembles that ofY. We call this methodspectral mimicry. We prove (under certain restrictions) that, if the univariate cumulative distribution function (CDF) ofX is identical to the CDF ofY, then the power spectral density ofZ equals the power spectral density ofY. We also show, for a class of examples, that when the CDFs ofX andY differ modestly, the power spectral density ofZ closely approximates the power spectral density ofY. The algorithm, developed to design an experiment in microbial population dynamics, has a variety of other applications.
