Notes: We fabricated submicron-sized intrinsic Josephson junctions by the focused-ion-beam (FIB) etching method. The principal result was a reduction of the in-plane junction area to 0.3 μm2 by direct FIB etching with no degradation in the critical transition temperature (Tc). In the current (I)–voltage (V) characteristics of these stacks, the gap structure and the normal state resistance are clearly observed together with a reduction of the Joule heating and disappearance of the branch structure. The Coulomb staircase structure was found in the I–V curves of submicron junctions as a result of their small effective capacitance of fF order. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The spin–lattice relaxation (SLR) of the photoexcited triplet states in fullerene C60 crystal is investigated at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. The mixing of the translational and rotational motions of the molecules (TRM relaxation mechanism) is chosen as the major phenomenon, leading to the coupling of the spin system with acoustic vibrations. The general expressions of the SLR rates for the direct one-phonon processes are obtained. The results of calculation are in accordance with available experimental data. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The morphological properties of YBCO superconducting films and their relationship to magnetic and transport phenomena are considered. A geometric probability analysis of the principal statistical characteristics of normal-phase clusters is performed, and their influence on the dynamics of trapped magnetic flux under the action of a pulsed transport current is revealed. The superconducting film is treated as a percolation system. It is found that the critical currents have a statistical distribution, which is specified by the morphology of the material being studied. The critical current for passage of the film into the resistive state is found.

Notes: Abstract The forces determining the orientation of domain walls in films of magnetooptic materials with a figure of merit of order unity are studied. The behavior of small perturbations of the position of a flat domain wall in the presence of an in-plane component of the anisotropy vector is analyzed. The forces arising when the orientation of the domain wall deviates from the easy-magnetization axis and striving to return the wall to its initial state are conventionally represented as a gradient “effective magnetic field.” The forces exerted by the “effective field, ” due to the in-plane component of the anisotropy vector, on the perturbed domain wall are calculated. The orientational stability conditions for a planar domain wall are found. An explanation is given for the experimentally observed predominant orientation of striped domains.

Notes: Abstract Results are presented of investigations of the surface relaxation of electret charge. It is established that when the electret is exposed to increased moisture, the charge transfer is of a percolation nature. Characteristics of the adsorption and growth of electrically conducting phase nuclei during the formation of a percolation cluster at an electrified surface are studied. The critical index of the correlation length of the percolation cluster is determined and shows good agreement with known theoretical estimates.

Notes: Abstract Sarason interpolation and Toeplitz corona problems are studied for almost periodic matrix functions. Recent results on almost periodic factorization and related generalized Toeplitz operators are the main tools in the study.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The temporary structures should have been designed with the same degree of reliability as that of the permanent structures. 2. Under the extreme and difficult conditions of construction in the Far North it is necessary to use only equipment proved by experience that can operate for a long time under all conditions without repair. 3. It was necessary to design the temporary outlet with consideration of permanent operation of the hydrostation. 4. It was necessary to make the transition from temporary to permanent operation controllable. It was advisable to provide for the possibility of discharging water during filling of the reservoir and thereby to regulate the level of the upper pool during filling. Furthermore, this outlet should serve for emptying the reservoir if necessary.

Notes: Conclusions 1. When constructing earth dams the inclusion of foreign members in the form of reinforced-concrete galleries, shafts, etc., in the body of the structure is impermissible. It is also desirable to eliminate the construction of a grouting gallery under the dam. The foundation should be grouted either before or after constructing the dam. 2. Installation of monitoring and measuring equipment for observations during operation must be done after completing construction of the dam. Installation of MME during construction leads to its complete disturbance, holds up the rate of filling, and affects the quality of the works. It is impermissible to construct concrete galleries on made ground. Elements of the dam should be constructed on a homogeneous foundation.
