    Notizen: Abstract The enantioselective hydrogenation of ethyl pyruvate to (R)-ethyl lactate has been studied using gases under supercritical conditions as solvents. The catalyst was a 5 wt% Pt/alumina modified with cinchonidine. In supercritical ethane the reaction time could be reduced by a factor of 3.5 compared to toluene under similar conditions, without any loss in enantioselectivity. A further advantage of ethane is that the enantioselectivity remains high even at high catalyst/reactant ratio, which is interesting in view of a possible application of a continuous fixed-bed reactor for this reaction. A strong catalyst deactivation was observed in supercritical CO2, which is due to the reduction of CO2 on Pt as indicated by FTIR.

    Notizen: Abstract The acid-base properties of 10 wt% V2O5-SiO2 and 10 wt% TiO2-SiO2 binary mixed oxide aero- and xerogels were determined by studying the transformation of methyloxirane and 1-butane. The transformations (the isomerization of methyloxirane to propanal and the double-bond migration of 1-butene to form isomeric 2-butenes) indicate that all samples contain mainly acidic sites. Correlations are shown to exist between heteroconnectivity (derived from FTIR analysis) in conjunction with the textural properties and the catalytic performance.

    Notizen: Abstract Platinum deposited onto high and low surface area graphites are used as model catalysts in studying the irreversible catalyst deactivation observed previously in the aerobic oxidation of L-sorbose to 2-keto-L-gulonic acid. The corrosion of platinum in the neutral aqueous solution was followed in the liquid cell of a scanning tunnelling microscope. Leaching of platinum was well detectable in the time scale of 1-2 h. Depending on the nature of graphite support and the Pt content, a considerable fraction or even all Pt dissolved during sorbose oxidation, as evidenced by cyclic voltammetry. The strikingly high rate of Pt dissolution into the neutral aqueous medium under ambient conditions is attributed to the excellent chelating properties of the polyhydroxy carboxylic acid product.

    Notizen: Abstract The enantioselective hydrogenation of 2,2,2-trifluoroacetophenone to (R)-1-phenyl-2,2,2-trifluoroethanol represents a new application of supported Pt catalysts modified with cinchona alkaloids. Heat treatment of a 5 wt% Pt/alumina catalyst at 400°C in flowing hydrogen, followed by an air-treatment of the reaction mixture before the hydrogenation reaction improved the enantiomeric excess by a factor of 2.5. Traces of water in apolar medium, high trifluoroacetophenone and moderate cinchonidine concentrations were also advantageous for enantiodifferentiation. Both reaction rate and enantiomeric excess increased during the initial transient period of the reaction, below 10% conversion.

    Notizen: Abstract The synthesis of methylamines from carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and ammonia has been studied over two palladium-alumina catalysts with palladium loadings of 2.8 and 7.6 wt%, respectively. Catalytic tests were performed in a fixed-bed microreactor at 0.6 MPa total pressure in the temperature range 473--573 K. The catalysts showed high activity for methylamine formation at low temperatures and produced monomethylamine with selectivities higher than 80%, besides of smaller amounts of di- and trimethylamine. Other carbon containing products observed were carbon monoxide, formed by the reverse water-gas shift reaction, and methane, which was the prevailing product above 573 K. In situ diffuse reflectance FTIR studies were performed to identify the species present on the catalyst surface under reaction conditions. Ammonia and methylamines are adsorbed on Brønsted and Lewis acid sites on the catalyst. Evidence is given that surface formate and isocyanate species are present on palladium-alumina under reaction conditions.

    Notizen: Abstract The dehydrogenation of iminodibenzyl (10,11-dihydro-5-dibenz[b.f]azepine) to iminostilbene (5H-dibenz[b.f]azepine) was investigated over potassium-promoted oxides of manganese, iron and cobalt. Both unsupported oxides as well as corresponding oxides supported on magnesium oxide were examined. Catalytic tests were carried out in a continuous fixed-bed reactor in the presence of steam in the temperature range of 400–550°C and at atmospheric pressure. Unsupported, potassium-promoted iron oxide proved to be the most suitable catalyst for the dehydrogenation of iminodibenzyl, yielding iminostilbene with 80% selectivity at nearly 100% conversion.

    Notizen: Abstract A technical, powder, platinum-on-graphite catalyst has been investigated up to atomic scale by transmission electron microscopy (OAI) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The catalyst had been prepared from a colloidal platinum sol. STM confirms, in addition to spherical particles, the presence of raft structures on the support surface, which had been suggested by the TEM images. The height of these raft structures varies from one to ten atomic layers.

    Notizen: Abstract The paper provides a short overview on the various Ti- and Si-containing epoxidation catalysts, with a focus on the development and characterisation of titania-silica mixed oxides prepared by the sol-gel-aerogel method. Titania-silica aerogels, dried by semicontinuous extraction of the solvent with supercritical CO2 at low temperature, possess high surface area, an amorphous mesoporous structure, and a rather even distribution of Ti in the silica matrix. The catalytic activities of mixed oxides, silica-supported titania and Ti-substituted molecular sieves (TS-1, Ti-Β and Ti-MCM-41) are compared in the epoxidation of 1-hexene, 1-octene, cyclohexene, cyclododecene and norbornene, based on literature data. The activities (i.e. the amount of converted olefin per unit time and catalyst weight) vary in a broad range of several orders of magnitude. It is shown that the low temperature aerogel containing 20 wt% TiO2 is superior to any other Ti- and Si-containing catalyst for the epoxidation of cyclic olefins. In the epoxidation of linear alkenes TS-1 has outstanding activity. Ti-substituted large and ultra-large pore molecular sieves require further development concerning their catalytic performance.

    Notizen: Abstract The enantioselective hydrogenation of ethyl pyruvate to (R)- or (S)-ethyl lactate has been studied over alumina- and carbon-supported Pt-metal catalysts modified by various heterocyclic N-compounds and substituted amides. The reactions were carried out under mild conditions in acetic acid; other solvents had a detrimental effect on enantioselectivity. An enantiomeric excess (ee) of 67% and a rate acceleration by a factor of 6, compared to the unmodified catalyst, was observed with alumina-supported Pt modified by (R)-1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamine. In contrast, carbon-supported Pd, Ru and Rh were non-selective and only little active. The studies indicated that besides naphthyl or quinolyl groups, two separate phenyl groups or one phenyl group together with two amino groups can provide a suitable anchoring of the chiral modifier on the Pt surface. The nature of interaction between the modifiers and ethyl pyruvate is briefly discussed.
