Notes: We present experimental results on the characterization of commercially available magnetic force microscopy (MFM) thin film tips as a function of an external magnetic field. Well defined magnetic stray fields are produced using current carrying rings with radii ranging between 603 and 2369 nm fabricated by electron-beam lithography directly imaged by MFM. Treating the MFM tip as a point probe, the analysis of the image contrast as a function of both the magnetic stray field and the lift height allows for a quantitative determination of effective magnetic dipole and monopole moments of the tip as well as their imaginary location within the real physical tip. Our systematic study gives a quantitative relationship on how absolute values of the magnetic dipole and monopole moments and their location within the tip depend on a characteristic decay length of the z component of the magnetic field being detected. From this we can estimate the effective tip volume of the real physical thin film tip relevant in MFM imaging. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The design and construction of two novel solid-state NMR probes are described. One probe incorporates a high-resolution goniometer for single-crystal studies, while the other can apply tension ((approximately-greater-than)5000 N) to fiber bundles. Deuterium spectra demonstrating the sensitivity of both probes are presented. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A simple design for a heatable, coolable, rotatable sample manipulator, suitable for ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) applications, is described. Highlights of the design include using a combination power/thermocouple feedthrough for heating, cooling, and temperature measurement; and the use of primarily "off-the-shelf'' components available from most UHV components vendors. The described manipulator is capable of sample cooling to ∼100 K, sample heating to above 900 K, while maintaining 360° of rotary motion, ∼1 in. of x and y motion, and 2 in. of z motion. The apparatus can be assembled for approximately $5500 (all new parts) and uses about 3 3l of liquid N2 per day. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A urethane dimethacrylate and tinting powder lamination, chemically bonded to a methyl methacrylate denture base, produces a natural-appearing distribution of the tints. The characterization is protected by a hard, clear layer of urethane. Procedures are described that achieve this lamination either in the laboratory, before processing the dentures, or after the dentures have been fabricated.

Notes: In this paper, we define environmental protection (EP) activities in the context of an input-output (I-O) framework. The U.S. I-O table is adjusted to separate inputs purchased by various economic sectors to abate pollution. We use I-O concepts and the I-O matrix adjusted for EP activities to derive a matrix of inputs to EP activities, which is independent of the matrix of inputs to traditional economic activities. This matrix is the basis for deriving measures of the economic importance of EP activities, including the size of EP activities relative to GNP and direct employment and indirect employment attributable to EP activities.

Notes: We report on the preparation and characterization of large scale periodic magnetic nanostructures designed as possible candidates for a future application in magnetic data storage technology. The nanostructures are prepared on glass substrates by UHV electron beam evaporation of Fe, Co, or Co/Pt onto periodically patterned photoresist masks followed by a lift-off of the photoresist. The preceding patterning process of the photoresist is achieved by using an interference lithography process in combination with subsequent selective etching. For the exposure of the photoresist, we use two different experimental setups with Ar ion lasers operating at wavelengths of 457 and 244 nm, respectively. This allows us to control diameter as well as distances between magnetic dots ranging between 300 and 3000 nm. The structural characterization of magnetic nanostructures is performed by electron microscopy as well as atomic force microscopy. Magnetic force microscopy along with additional image calculations based on dipole–dipole interaction between a magnetic tip and a magnetic dot allows for an interpretation of the magnetic properties of single magnetic dots. Accompanying work focuses on comparable nanostructures of smaller sized samples prepared by electron-beam lithography. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report a systematic investigation of the fcc–bcc structural phase transition of thin Fe films sandwiched between CuNi alloys. The structures were of the type substrate/20 nm Pt/10 nm CuNi/0–2 nm Fe wedge/1 nm CuNi/2 nm Pt. All films were deposited in high vacuum by electron beam evaporation at temperatures ranging from 400 °C (Pt seed layer) to 100 °C (CuNi alloy layers and Fe wedge) to 20 °C (Pt cap layer). The CuNi composition ratio was varied in 10 at. % steps in order to vary its lattice constant from a=0.3607 nm (Cu) to 0.3517 (Ni) nm, which encompasses the value of gamma Fe (fcc low spin state). X-ray diffraction measurements reveal strong (111) texturing with an alignment of the Pt 〈111〉 axis better than 5 deg (rocking curve width) of the completed structures. Kerr loops in fields ±18 kOe were recorded as function of the Fe-wedge position with a spatial resolution of about 0.8 mm, corresponding to 0.1 nm Fe thickness resolution. These hysteresis loops reveal the saturation Kerr angle (0.1 mdeg resolution), the saturation field (anisotropy field) and a paramagnetic slope, which are all analyzed as function of the Fe thickness and the CuNi composition. Clear evidence for the formation of paramagnetic Fe is found for Cu-rich CuNi alloys, where a Kerr rotation below the resolution limit of our apparatus extends up to (approximately-greater-than)2 nm Fe thickness. The transition thickness from fcc to bcc Fe, as characterized by the onset of a linear uptake of the Kerr rotation, shows a pronounced maximum near about 25 at. % Ni, indicating that a small compression of the Fe lattice constant (about −2%) leads to the nonferromagnetic fcc Fe state. A similar study, using CuAu alloys with the aim of characterizing the high spin ferromagnetic fcc Fe phase, is in progress. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The field of family violence, although rapidly expanding, remains characterized by large gaps in knowledge regarding both etiology and effective treatment strategies. The purpose of this article is to integrate diverse research efforts in order to better understand the etiology, maintenance, and treatment of interpart-ner violence. Identified limitations include problems with definition, and the lack of integrated, multidimensional explanatory theories, well-controlled treatment outcome studies, and relational-level analyses. Identified strengths include the development of typologies and advances in measurement of interpersonal violence. The underlying theme of this article is that an integrated effort, incorporating basic research and clinical innovation, Individual and interactional perspectives, and differing theoretical orientations and advocacy positions, holds the greatest promise for effectively impacting this problem.

Notes: The widespread effect of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in clinical settings as well as other sectors of public health has drawn much research attention lately, which has raised in the field many contentious issues about this condition. This article reviews current literature on SAD, presenting the historical background, diagnostic criteria, epidemiological data, clinical features, treatment, and possible etiological mecrtanism(s) of SAD. The issue of whether SAD is a distinct clinical entity is discussed.
