    Notes: Abstract— A new single-specimen testing method, the normalization method with the so-called LMN calibration function, based on the load separation principle and function calibrations from an individual test record, was used to construct J-R curves directly from load versus load-line displacement records without any additional on-line crack-length monitoring equipment. The research was done on CT-specimens of a glassy polymer PVC at different crosshead speeds ranging from 0.01 to 50 mm/min. The J-R curves evaluated from the normalization method are in good agreement with those from the conventional multiple-specimen testing method in the whole range of the tested crosshead speeds. The results demonstrated the applicability of the normalization method for developing J-R curves at different crosshead speeds in PVC. The crack initiation J-integral values, J0.2, showed a two-regime dependence on the crosshead speeds in the tested crosshead speed range.

    Notes: Abstract Larval damselflies frequently engage in aggressive interactions that may increase their risk of fish predation. To test this we analyzed the behavior of larval Ischnura verticalis exposed to both conspecifics and fish predators. Larvae in the presence of conspecifics oriented, struck, and swam more but crawled less compared to solitary larvae; the presence of fish reduced, or tended to reduce, all behaviors. Fish struck more at interacting larvae compared to noninteracting larvae. Increased attack rate by fish likely reflects the increase in the very active swimming behavior by larvae and suggests a conflict between antipredator behaviors. Swimming is an appropriate response to avoid predation by odonate larvae which normally ambush prey but is clearly dangerous when fast-swimming fish that cue in on movement are nearby.

    Notes: Abstract The etching of indium-tin oxide (ITO) in acidic solution has been investigated electro-chemically via conductivity change, cyclic voltammetry and in situ UV-visible spectroscopy. It is seen that the ITO has a new color and lower conductivity when reduced. Proton insertion is faster than proton extraction, with D=7.0×10-11 cm2 s-1 and 2.4×10-11 cm2 s-1 respectively. Spectroscopic and kinetic results are discussed in terms of a possible mixed-valent solid-state material comprising In(I)–In(III) oxides, although it is concluded that such a system does not, in fact, exist. It is shown that the chemical reactivity of reduced ITO is more-or-less the same as the oxidized material, but the observed changes result from a decreased mechanical strength causing HxITO to disintegrate faster than ITO. Implications are discussed for ITO-based devices that contain traces of aqueous acid.

    Notes: Abstract The kinetics of nucleation and crystal growth of dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD, CaHPO4. 2H2O) on titanium powders with different grain sizes have been investigated using the constant composition crystal growth method at 37°C and pH = 5.50. Nucleation is independent of titanium powder size while crystal growth rate is strongly size-dependent. A minimum relative supersaturation ratio, σmin, required in the system for a detectable crystal growth rate to occur, taking into account the presence of the foreign substrate in the system, was determined. Based on the kinetic data and on the various characterizations by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and by scanning electron microscopy, we propose a crystal growth kinetic equation as a function of two parameters: the size of the substrate and the excess of supersaturation (σ−σmin) which is squared, indicating a spiral growth mechanism. © 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers
