Notes: Abstract Background: Acute non-organic psychoses, as often described in European and Indian literature, and categorized as `Acute and transient psychotic disorders' in ICD-10, lack a clear nosological distinction from schizophrenia. Methods: A family study of psychiatric disorders in first-degree relatives (FDRs) of 40 ICD-10-diagnosed probands of acute and transient psychotic disorders (ATP) was carried out using a semi-structured interview schedule. The results were compared with those of 40 schizophrenic probands. Results: FDRs of ATP probands had a higher prevalence of ATP than those of schizophrenic probands. FDRs of schizophrenic probands had significantly higher prevalence of schizophrenia than those of ATP probands. ATP subtypes with schizophrenic symptomatology (ICD-10 codes F 23.1 and F 23.2 ) had more family history of schizophrenia than the rest of the ATP subtypes. Conclusion: ATP as a group has a differential pattern of risk of illness compared to schizophrenia. Further, the subtypes subsumed under ICD-10 ATP may be genetically heterogeneous, those with schizophrenia-like symptomatology being possibly more akin to schizophrenia itself or forming an interface between ATP and schizophrenia.

Notes: Abstract The present analysis gives an account of exergy destruction in regenerative heat exchangers used in cryogenic applications from the view point of Second Law of Thermodynamics. Unlike the previous studies, the present work considers the solid storage matrix with temperature variation along both spatial and temporal co-ordinates. The present analysis also considers the effect of matrix longitudinal heat conduction on the Second Law behaviour. Finite longitudinal conductivity, which results from the distribution of temperature in the matrix, acts as a major non-ideality associated with the analyses done so far. The present analysis shows that the introduction of longitudinal conduction ensures the optimization of charging period for the regenerator. This makes it possible to optimize the regenerator performance globally to produce optimum combination of N tu and charging time. It is also observed that a decrease in longitudinal conductivity reduces the optimum charging time. Thus the non-existence of thermodynamic optima at the absence of longitudinal conduction is explained adequately.

Notes: Abstract  The shell and tube heat exchangers constitute the single largest component of the heat exchanger family. Though a vast number of literature is available for their steady state analyses, the number of works on transient analysis are comparatively fewer. The present paper brings out the transient response of a single pass shell and tube heat exchanger neglecting wall heat capacitance. The model is constructed with a distributed parameter approach. Unlike a number of recent analyses the numerical technique is avoided and the path of double Laplace transform has been chosen instead. This gives a scope for a unique functional representation of the response which is useful for deciding the control strategies to be adopted. This strategy has been formulated for the parallel flow model using PID controllers.

Notes: Abstract Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) has been used to study the dehydration characteristics of hydrated calcium aluminates such as CA, CA2 and C12A7 where C and A stand for CaO and Al2O3 respectively. Dehydration of CAH10 and C2AH8 (whereH=H2O) occur ∼ at 160–180°C and 200–280°C respectively. These two phases are unstable and ultimately get transformed to AH3 and C3AH6. Dehydration of AH3 and C3AH6 occur between 290 and 350°C and overlap at lower scanning rate. The activation energy for dehydration of the stable AH3 and C2AH6 phases has been found to be 107.16 and 35.58 kJ mol−1 respectively. The compressive strength of the hydrated calcium aluminates has been determined. The result shows that in the case of CA, almost 90% of ultimate strength has been attained in 1 day whereas in CA2, ultimate strength has been attained in 14 days and in C12A7 in 1 day. DSC results have been correlated with the rate of strength developments.

Notes: Summary An investigation is undertaken of the unsteady response of two-dimensional laminar free convection boundary layer flow of a viscous incompressible fluid along a semi-infinite vertical heated plate where the mean surface heat flux oscillates with a small amplitude about a steady profile. The buoyancy forces are favourable, resulting from a positive flux of heat from the surface of the plate into the fluid. The interaction of the time-periodic heat flux with the usual boundary-layer flow is examined by using a linearized theory. Solutions are obtained using three distinct methods, namely an extended series expansion method for low frequencies, an asymptotic series expansion method for high frequencies and a fully numerical finite difference method for general frequencies. Calculations have been carried out for a wide range of parameters to examine the solutions in terms of the amplitude and phase angle of the fluctuating parts of the surface shear stress and the surface temperature. It has been found that the amplitude and phase angle of both the shear stress and the surface temperature predicted by these three methods are in very good agreement in their respective ranges of validity.

Notes: Abstract After the successful use of 3-[4,5-(dimethylthiazol-2-yl)]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) in cell proliferation assays, its use has been established by different workers in cytotoxicity assays and research on leukaemia. In the present study, a colorimetric assay using MTT was adopted to evaluate the cytotoxic activity of chicken intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes (iIELs), which constitute an important cellular component of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). These iIELs are found to exhibit natural killer (NK) cell-like cytotoxic activity, which is spontaneous, non-MHC-restricted, and does not need to be primed. Hitherto, conventional chromium-release assays have been used to evaluate the cytotoxic activity of iIELs, but these assays have disadvantages such as radiation hazards and loss of the cells in washing steps. The mean percentage cytotoxic activity of chicken iIELs evaluated by the colorimetric assay was 90.37±2.53 in a group of 5-week-old chickens and 80.2±3.45 in a group of 8-week-old chickens. These findings established the successful use of a colorimetric assay using MTT for evaluating the cytotoxic activity of chickens iIELs.

Notes: Abstract It is of considerable importance to be able to predict accurately the viscosity of liquids over a wide range of conditions. In the present work, the ability of the three-parameter generalized corresponding states principle (GCSP) for the prediction of the viscosity of pure liquids is demonstrated. The viscosity of six different classes of pure liquids, viz., alkanes (19 compounds; 207 data points), cycloalkanes (6 compounds; 74 data points), alkenes (9 compounds; 146 data points), aromatics (4 compounds; 123 data points), alkanols (8 compounds; 89 data points), and esters (4 compounds; 28 data points) have been predicted over a wide range of temperatures using the three-parameter (T c, P c, θ) GCSP. Five options for the third parameter (θ) were studied, viz., Pitzer's acentric factor ω, molar mass M, characteristic viscosity η*, critical compressibility factor Z c, and modified acentric factor Ω, in addition to groups ωZ c and ΩZ c being treated as composite third parameters. Pressure effects were neglected. Good agreement between experimental and predicted values of viscosity was obtained, especially with either ω or η* being used as the third parameter. Furthermore, the viscosities of alkanes predicted by the TRAPP method and an empirical, generalized one-parameter model for liquid hydrocarbons provide comparisons with the more accurate GCSP method. The GCSP provides a simple and yet a powerful technique for the correlation and prediction of viscosities of a variety of pure liquids over a wide range of temperatures.

Notes: Abstract Discontinuous precipitation in a 21Cr-10Mn-5Ni steel was found to result in breakdown of passivity when tested in a 0.5 m H2SO4 + 0.01 m KSCN solution. The electrochemical response was similar to that due to sensitization of conventional stainless steels. The ageing time and temperature affected the resistance of the passive film, with lower ageing temperatures being more severe in terms of passivity breakdown. The effect of interlamellar spacing on the chromium depletion, the effect of volume diffusion on the healing of the matrix, and the solubility product reaction for precipitation, were considered to explain the observed different strengths of passive films formed on specimens aged at different temperatures and times. The observance of good corrosion protection in spite of the presence of profuse precipitates was in contrast to the effect of grain-boundary carbide proliferation on the corrosion resistance of conventional stainless steels.
