Notes: The implementation of modular invariance on the torus as a phase space at the quantum level is discussed in a group-theoretical framework. Unlike the classical case, at the quantum level some restrictions on the parameters of the theory should be imposed to ensure modular invariance. Two cases must be considered, depending on the cohomology class of the symplectic form on the torus. If it is of integer cohomology class n, then full modular invariance is achieved at the quantum level only for those wave functions on the torus which are periodic if n is even, or antiperiodic if n is odd. If the symplectic form is of rational cohomology class n/r, a similar result holds—the wave functions must be either periodic or antiperiodic on a torus r times larger in both directions, depending on the parity of nr. Application of these results to the Abelian Chern–Simons theory is discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this paper there are constructed manifestly covariant relativistic coherent states on the entire complex plane which reproduce others previously introduced on a given SL(2,R) representation, once a change of variables z∈C→zD∈ unit disk is performed. Also introduced are higher-order, relativistic creation and annihilation operators, aˆ,aˆ°, with canonical commutation relation [aˆ, aˆ°]=1 rather than the covariant one [zˆ, zˆ°]≈ energy and naturally associated with the SL(2,R) group. The canonical (relativistic) coherent states are then defined as eigenstates of aˆ. Finally, a canonical, minimal representation is constructed in configuration space by means of eigenstates of a canonical position operator. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. Convalescence after surgery is characterized by a period of fatigue (POF). If we assume that the POF syndrome has a multifactorial etiology, it is clear that the aim of therapeutic measures should be to reduce the response to surgical stress. The purpose of the present study was to determine if administering exogenous human growth hormone (hGH) can prevent the development or reduce the duration of the POF. We carried out a placebo-controlled randomized double-blind trial with 48 patients after elective cholecystectomy (placebo, or control group, n = 26; hGH-treated group, n = 22). Eligibility criteria were strict so as to introduce as few variables as possible. The results obtained in the study show that for moderate surgical injury (cholecystectomy in metabolically healthy subjects) the administering of low doses of hGH (8 IU/day) minimized the POF syndrome (Christensen score). Furthermore, a positive nitrogen balance was achieved in the hGH-treated group during the postoperative period from the first 24 hours onward. This finding correlates with the significant increase in serum levels of hGH ( p 〈 0.05) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) ( p 〈 0.001). On the other hand, anthropometric measurements in the hGH-treated group revealed a slight but continuous decrease in body weight and thickness of the triceps skinfold; however, arm muscle circumference did not significantly change during the postoperative period. These findings are related to the effects of the application of exogenous growth hormone, which preserves or increases lean body mass and reduces adipose tissue mass. The serum transferrin level proved to be a reliable biochemical indicator of POF.

Notes: Abstract. In the present study we show that thymus type II thyroxine deiodinase activity exhibits a nyctohemeral profile, with basal values during the day and high values at night. This rhythmic character is dependent on neuroadrenergic input since exposure to continuous light at night completely abolished the nocturnal rise of the enzyme activity. However, treatment with isoproterenol under light exposure at night restored it.

Notes: Abstract The Generalized Integral Transform Technique (G.I.T.T.) is extended to handle the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for two-dimensional steady laminar flow in cylindrical geometries. Hybrid numerical-analytical solutions with controlled accuracy are obtained, as a result of an appropriate choice of the associated eigenfunction expansion basis, extracted from the diffusion operator of the stream function-only formulation for this class of problems. The approach is illustrated for developing laminar flow within an annular channel and numerical results are obtained to demonstrate the excellent convergence characteristics of this hybrid method. Critical comparisons against the boundary layer formulation are provided, and a set of benchmark results is produced, for different values of Reynolds number and aspect ratio.

Notes: Abstract The Generalized Integral Transform Technique (GITT) is utilized in the hybrid numerical-analytical solution of the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations, for developing turbulent flow inside a parallel-plates channel. An algebraic turbulence model is employed in modelling the turbulent diffusivity. The automatic global error control feature inherent to this approach, permits the determination of fully converged reference results for the validation of purely numerical methods. Therefore, numerical results for different values of Reynolds number are obtained, both for illustrating the convergence characteristics of the integral transform approach, and for critical comparisons with previously reported results through different models and numerical schemes.
