    Notes: Three pot experiments have investigated the effects of nitrogen (N) supply on interspecific competition between three weed species (Phalaris minor Retz., Chenopodium album L, and Sinapis arvensis L.) and spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv, Alexandria. The treatments tested included monocultures of each species and a mix-ture containing them in equal proportions that were combined factorially with two levels of N supply (20, 120 kg N ha-1). Low N supply decreased net photosynthetic rate (Pn), leaf N percentage, plant dry weight and N uptake of both wheat and weed species and gram dry weight of wheat. The effects of low N on Pn and dry weight of weeds were greater than the effects on wheat. In most cases the decrease in Pn at low N was due to non-stomatal factors. The relative competitive abilities of wheat and weeds were influenced by N supply. At high N, S.arvensis was more competitive than wheat, whereas P. minor was less competitive than wheat. C. album was more competitive than wheat at both N levels. The rank order of competitive ability of the weed species was C. album 〉 P. minor 〉 S. arvensis. The effects of interspecific competition on Pn were smaller than the effects of N supply and were not associated with corresponding effects on leaf N percentage and plant dry weight of both wheat and weed species and grain dry weight of wheat.

    Notes: Summary  The differential diagnosis of a sellar lesion includes pituitary adenoma, cranio-pharyngioma, tumour cyst, benign cyst, and other less common lesions such as aneurysm, squamous cell carcinoma and metastases. Pure cystic lesions within the sella turcica are not uncommon and may appear clinically and radiologically as pituitary adenoma. Intrasellar cysts are broadly classified as neoplastic or non-neoplastic; the latter may be primary lesions of the pituitary fossa or they may arise from the parasellar region and invade into the sella. The lesions occupy space and may cause disturbance of pituitary function; if they extend into the suprasellar region they can affect visual fields and acuity. Non-neoplastic cystic lesions usually appear well defined radiologically and have distinct pathological features. Modern imaging modalities, such as computed axial tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, are important complementary tools of investigation for reaching a differential diagnosis, and for surgical planning. Most non-neoplastic sellar cysts can be approached through the trans-sphenoidal route, but large lesions with suprasellar extension may require transcranial surgery.  We report the presentation and management of eight cases (four males, four females, all adult) of non-neoplastic cyst involving the sella turcica and the parasellar region. Investigations included computed tomography scan of the head for all and magnetic resonance imaging for six (75%) patients. Work-up included endocrinological and opthalmological evaluations. All presented with headache; six (75%) had visual acuity change, two (25%) had evidence of visual field defects, four (50%) had optic atrophy on fundoscopy, three (37.5%) had endocrine symptoms and hormone reduction was found in four (50%).

    Notes: Abstract Osteopetrosis is a rare congenital disorder of bone resorption, which causes generalized hyperostosis. One of its many complications involves the skull base and progressive encroachment of the optic nerves within their canals, resulting in optic atrophy and blindness. Management of patients with deteriorating vision may include surgical decompression of the optic canals; their selection requires careful assessment by radiology, computed tomography, visual evoked potentials, electroretinography and possibly hæmodynamic studies of the ophthalmic arteries. Postoperative changes can create difficulty in the interpretation of follow-up radiological investigations. In this study, transcranial Doppler sonography was used to assess the blood flow velocities in the ophthalmic arteries non-invasively. Pre- and postoperative studies of the Doppler parameters were done for each ophthalmic artery in a 5-month-old boy under standard physiological conditions. He presented with almost complete blindness and subsequently showed a good outcome following surgical intervention.

    Notes: Abstract Experiments were conducted under laboratory and greenhouse conditions to study the effect of 2,4-D on rooting and salinity tolerance of wheat. Seeds of one commercial wheat (Inqalab-91) and three salt-tolerant wheat lines (WL-41, WL-359, and WL-1073 developed through wide hybridization) were included in the study. Preliminary and short-term experiments were conducted to determine the level of 2,4-D (administered through seed soaking for 24.5 h. at 25 °C in the dark) at which the maximum number of roots emerged. Under hydroponic conditions, 2,4-D treatment of seeds caused an increase of 60 to 100% in the number of primary roots. The maximum increase in the number of roots was observed in one of the salt tolerant wheat lines (WL-41). The roots appeared in bunches but showed stunted growth at higher levels of 2,4-D. Dry matter accumulation decreased markedly; the effect was more pronounced in Inqalab-91 which is less tolerant to stress than other wheat lines. In all wheat types, allocation of dry matter to roots relative to shoot increased due to 2,4-D treatment. In soil, seeds treated with different levels of 2,4-D showed a germination delay of 1–3 days. Although the number of primary roots increased, 2,4-D treatment caused a decrease in total dry matter accumulation by plants grown for 40 days. In another experiment, conducted under greenhouse conditions, seed germination and growth of seedlings was significantly retarded in saline compared to that in non-saline (normal) soil. Initially, the pace of germination of treated seeds as well as seedling growth was slower in both soils, but after six weeks, the leaf area of seedlings raised from treated seeds was greater than those raised from untreated seeds. Towards maturity, plants arising from treated seeds developed wider and longer flag leaves leading to enhanced yield. Root biomass decreased in saline soil as compared to normal soil. However, 2,4-D treatment caused a substantial increase in root biomass in saline soil and the roots were harder in texture in wheats other than Inqalab-91. Seed treatment with 2,4-D led to a significant improvement in the number of productive tillers, yield of straw and grain, and grain protein content of all wheats grown in saline soil. Plants grown in normal soil did not show any marked effect of seed treatment on grain yield and other agronomic parameters. The four wheats showed substantial differences for different parameters but the salt tolerant wheat lines performed better compared to the commercial variety Inqalab-91.

    Notes: Abstract Immune responses to the repeat regions of the Plasmodium falciparum antigen Pf155/RESA have been extensively studied, and antibodies to the repeats are known to interfere with parasite growth both in vitro and in vivo. Less is known with regard to the effect on parasites of antibodies to the nonrepeat regions of the antigen. In the present study, rabbits were immunized with synthetic peptides corresponding to three different nonrepeated sequences of antigen Pf155/RESA. The reactivity of the antibodies with the particular peptides was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and that with the parasite antigen, by immunoblotting and immunofluorescence. Although all antisera reacted strongly with the corresponding synthetic peptides, they reacted only weakly with full-length Pf155/RESA in either of the methods used. The specificity of the antibodies for Pf155/RESA was confirmed by their failure to stain Pf155/RESA-deficient parasites in erythrocyte membrane immunofluorescence, a method mainly detecting this antigen. Antibodies to the nonrepeat sequences also efficiently inhibited the merozoite invasion in vitro of Pf155/RESA+ parasites. However, these antibodies also inhibited Pf155/RESA-deficient parasites, indicating the presence of an antigen exhibiting a high degree of homology with Pf155/RESA. The results indicate that nonrepeat sequences of Pf155/RESA are immunogenic and may serve as targets for parasite-neutralizing antibodies, and, thus, the potential of the antigen as a vaccine candidate is emphasized.
