Notes: Objective To examine the effect of hormone replacement therapy upon sleep quality and duration in postmenopausal women.Design Randomised, single-blind, placebo-controlled trial.Setting Sleep research laboratory.Subjects Thirty-three healthy postmenopausal women.Interventions Continuous 0–625 mg conjugated equine oestrogens with 0.15 mg cyclic norgestrel taken for 12 days per 28 day cycle.Main outcome measures Occurrence of vasomotor symptoms, polysomnographic sleep stage measures, Stanford sleepiness questionnaire, Crown-Crisp experiential index and the cognitive failures questionnaire. Results Hormone replacement therapy results in an improvement in menopausal symptoms but not in parameters of sleep quality. Despite this, certain measures of psychological wellbeing showed significant improvement in the hormone replacement therapy group. Conclusion Hormone replacement therapy results in a measurable improvement in physical and psychological welfare, the latter being independent of improvement in sleep quality.

Notes: The relationship between Theory of Mind (ToM) and rule use was explored in adults with Downs Syndrome (DS) and in non-handicapped pre-schoolers. Twelve low-functioning individuals with DS (mean mental age = 5.1 years, mean chronological age = 22.7) performed worse than 12 MA-matchcd non-handicapped children (mean MA =5.1 years) on several standard ToM tasks and on a color-shape card-sorting task in which subjects were required to switch between two incompatible sets of rules. On the ToM tasks, people with DS tended to focus on a single slate of affairs (e.g. the present situation). Likewise, on the card sort. these subjects tended to use a single set of rules on all trials. Performance in the two types of [ask was positively correlated when MA was partialed out. The results are inconsistent with the claim that ToM reflects a domain-specific psychological function and the notion that deficits in ToM are unique to individuals with autism. Notes: Two tasks were used to assess the processing of whole versus parts of objects in a group of high-functioning children and adolescents with autism (N = 11) and a comparison group of typically developing peers (N = 11) matched for chronological age and IQ. In the first task, only the children with autism showed a global advantage, and the two groups showed similar interference between levels. In the second task, the children with autism, despite longer RTs, showed similar performance to the comparison group with regard to the effect of goodness on visual parsing. Contrary to expectations based on the central coherence and hierarchisation deficit theories, these findings indicate intact holistic processing among persons with autism. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to apparently discrepant evidence from other studies.

Notes: Abstract: The secretion of melatonin by the pineal has been promoted as a direct monitor of adrenergic function in depressive illness. However, discrepant findings have been reported, possibly reflecting a complex adrenergic regulation of pineal output. In order to clarify the anatomical localization and relative density of β-adrenergic receptors and their subtypes in human pineal, quantitative autoradiographic analysis was conducted of β-adrenergic receptors in postmortem specimens using the high affinity radioligand 125I-pindolol. Dense specific binding was found throughout the gland. β1,-adrenergic receptors were more numerous, but β2-receptors were present in an overlapping anatomical distribution with β1-receptors.

Notes: A spatial stochastic approach was adopted to estimate the capture zones of a welifield in eastern Netherlands near the town of Wierden. The main sources of uncertainty were found to be the hydraulic conductivity of the production aquifer and the spatial distribution and thickness of an impeding clay layer situated above the production aquifer. Both were modeled as random space functions and a Monte Carlo analysis was performed to assess the probability distributions of the capture zones for t = 25 years and t →∞. The distributions were compared with two deterministic capture zones to show how the stochastic approach preserves the discontinuous character of the impeding clay layer while the deterministic approach smooths out the discontinuities. Furthermore, it is shown how the stochastic approach reveals the uncertainty about the location of the capture zones while the deterministic approach obscures it.

Notes: Summary.  The genome of physalis mottle tymovirus (PhMV) is 6673 nucleotides long and is rich in cytosine residues (40.58%) like other tymoviruses. The organization of the genes is also similar to that of five other tymoviruses whose sequences are known. However, PhMV has the longest 3 ′ noncoding region as well as the longest replicase (RP) ORF. The RP sequences are similar to those of other tymoviruses (48–60% identity) whereas the coat proteins (CP) and the overlapping proteins (OP) are conserved to a lesser extent (30–50% and 26–34% respectively). A tetra peptide “GILG” was found to be present in all the tymoviral OPs. The PhMV RP also possesses the methyl transferase, polymerase and the helicase motifs found in all the Sindbis-like super group of plant viruses. A phylogenetic analysis of the six tymoviral sequences revealed that they do not have a rigid hierarchical similarity relationship.

Notes: [Auszug] Holt-Oram syndrome is characterized by upper limb malformations and cardiac septation defects. Here, we demonstrate that mutations in the human TBX5 gene underlie this disorder. TBX5 was cloned from the disease locus on human chromosome 12q24.1 and identified as a member of the T-box transcription ...

Description / Table of Contents: Contents The spectrum of the magnetic field in the air gap of induction motors is influenced by the level of saturation of the magnetic circuit. This report deals with the effects of saturation, which are significantly different in case of yoke respectively teeth saturation. The research is done by means of numerical field calculations of a simplified model. The results are compared with a commonly used analytical approach. Beside of the reduction of the fundamental field the effects of saturation on the third and fifth space-harmonics are found to be most important. The effect on the slot harmonics is proved to be negligible for the model presented.
