Notes: Josephson junctions and dc superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) have been fabricated in ex situ epitaxial Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 films on bicrystal LaAlO3 substrates with symmetric 32° [001] tilt grain boundaries. The critical temperature Tc, of the junctions was in the range 105–107 K and the critical current densities at 77 K varied between 3×102 and 3×104 A/cm2, two or three orders of magnitude less than those of the film. The I–V curves are described by a resistively shunted junction model. Close to Tc, the temperature dependence of the critical current was described by (1−T/Tc)2. The flux noise spectra SΦ(f) of dc SQUIDs were measured in the locked-loop regime with constant current bias at temperatures up to 94 K. The white noise level was 50μΦ0/(square root of)Hz at 77 K. The crossover frequency to 1/f noise was low, about 5 Hz, and the flux noise level at 1 Hz was 440μΦ0/(square root of)Hz. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The growth of Tl-2201 films on LaAlO3 single crystal substrates has been investigated. The synthesis involved precursor films made by laser ablation that were treated with Tl2O(g) in near-equilibrium conditions. By optimising the method of preparation, we obtained films that were highly smooth, c-axis oriented and epitaxial. The rocking curve of the (0010) reflection had a FWHM of 0.27°. A Tc of 92K was achieved without post-annealing.

Notes: 2 Ba2CuO6 films on single-crystal LaAlO3 was investigated using atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Most of the film surface consisted of flat areas separated by single or several unit-cell steps. This morphology suggests that the films grow predominantly by a step-flow mechanism. A Tl-2201 film grown using a precursor film deposited at 700 °C exhibited stacks of planes arranged in a screw-like manner on a flat background. Islands of 1–3 μm size and a height of 2–20 unit cells were dominant structures on the surface. Possible causes for the formation of the screw-like structures are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation of type 304L stainless steel wasinvestigated at 873 K in the presence of O2and O2 + 10% H2O. Oxidation timevaried between 1 and 672 hr. The oxidized samples wereinvestigated by a number of surface-analytical techniques includinggrazing-angle XRD, SEM/EDX, auger spectroscopy, SIMS andXPS. Oxidation in dry oxygen results in the formation acorundum-type oxide (Me2O3) withadditional formation of spinel oxides after prolonged exposure. Theoxide layer contained mainly chromium, with smalleramounts of Fe and Mn. Oxidation in the presence of watervapor results in an oxide that contains more Fe and less Cr, the outer part of the oxide beingdepleted in Cr. In the presence of water vapor, a massloss is detected after prolonged exposure. We show thatthe mass loss is caused by chromium evaporation. The volatile species is suggested to beCrO2(OH)2.

Notes: Abstract Superconducting epitaxial Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 (Tl-2212) and Tl2Ba2CuO6, (Tl-2201) thin films are synthesised on single crystal and bicrystal LaAlO3 substrates by an ex-situ process. Tl-2212 films were optically smooth, with Tc′s from 105 to 108K and ΔTc 〈2K, Jc reaching 2·106A/cm2 at 77K. Tl-2201 films exhibited tetragonal or orthorhombic symmetry depending on the thallium content. The Tc of the as-synthesised Tl-2201 films was in the range 40–55K. By oxygen depletion, Tc was increased by 15 – 20 K. Properties of weak links in Tl-2212 and Tl-2201 thin films are reported.

    Notes: Abstract We have studied the I-V characteristics of a Tl-2201 film at zero field. In the regime in which flux creep is the dominant dissipation mechanism, the J c -T curve is divided into two parts at a temperature T g (about 82 K), close to the critical temperature (84 K). The I-V characteristics around T g are well described using a flux creep model. For T〉T g , J c /J c (0) =0.445x(l-0.525t-0.5t 2 ); for T〈T g , J c /J c (0) = 0.9x(1-0.595t-0.44t 2 ). Differential resistance (dV/dI) as a function of the measuring current shows a change in curvature close to T g . The I-V curves collapsed nicely into two branches by plotting (V/I)/|T−T g | v(z-1) vs. (I/T)/|T g −T| 2v , indicating a current–reduced vortex glass transition.

Notes: Abstract The vortex dynamics in a Tl 2 Ba 2 CuO 6 (Tl-2201) thin film with a critical temperature T c = 80.8 K has been studied by electrical resistivity measurements for magnetic fields 0≤B≤12 T. The vortex glass line, as determined from the disappearance of linear resistivity, was found to be well described by B g (T) = B 0 [(1−T/T c )/(T/T c )]α, with B 0 ≈ 0.65 T and α ≈ 1.9. The glass line of Tl-2201 is observed to be located below the one of Tl 2 Ba 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (Tl-2212) in a magnetic phase diagram based on a reduced temperature scale T/T c , thus suggesting a higher anisotropy for Tl-2201.

Notes: Abstract Epitaxial Tl-2201 films are prepared on single crystal LaAlO 3 and SrTiO 3 by thallization of thallium-free precursor films made by laser ablation. Thallization is carried out in two consecutive steps. In the first step, at 720 °C, a smooth and epitaxial film is produced. The second thallization, at 820 °C, improved film crystallinity and the T c . The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction and by resistance and susceptibility measurements. For a film on single crystal LaAlO 3 , the FWHM of the Ω scan (0,0,10) was 0.27°. T c was 84K while J c , reached 1.6×10 6 A/ cm 2 at 77K. A film on single crystal SrTiO 3 exhibited somewhat lower T c (78 K) while J c was much smaller (9.5×10 3 A/cm 2 at 70.4K).

Notes: We report on the atmospheric corrosion of different cast statue bronzes in humid air containing ppb levels of SO2 and SO2+NO2. In addition, copper, tin, zinc, and lead samples were studied in these environments. The samples were exposed to synthetic atmospheres with careful control of pollutant concentrations, relative humidity and flow conditions. Deposition of SO2 was studied using on-line gas analysis. The weight gain was registered after four weeks exposure, and corrosion products were analysed by Electron Probe Micro Analyser (EPMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).The synergistic effect of SO2 and NO2 was remarkable on all bronze materials examined. The weight gain was correlated to alloy composition. Thus, high zinc and low lead content resulted in the greatest weight gain, while high tin content favoured a low weight increase. Lead exhibited a rapid deposition of SO2 followed by zinc and copper, while tin was unreactive towards SO2. There was no measurable indication that microstructure influenced corrosion. The corrosion product morphology found in SO2+NO2 environment indicated a localised type of attack. The anodic sites were covered by a tin-rich corrosion product close to the metal. Oxidation of soluble divalent tin by O2 at the anodic sites to form insoluble SnO2 - xH2O, is suggested to explain the corrosion protection afforded by alloying with tin. Tin was enriched in the corrosion products while no lead was found. The zinc/copper relation was higher in the corrosion products than in the alloy composition.
