    Notes: The in-plane uniaxial anisotropy and perpendicular anisotropy of sputtered Co/Ag(111) multilayers have been investigated by magnetic measurements and the in-plane ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique. The data-fitting analysis for the FMR experimental results about the angular dependence of the resonance field shows that the in-plane anisotropy cannot be fully described by only using the first-order term, and the second-order term must be included. Furthermore, the interface-induced anisotropy has been obtained by FMR. Both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings have been revealed by hysteresis loop measurement. Specifically, a spin-flip phase transition has been observed in the sputtered Co/Ag(111) multilayers, which is attributed to the effects of the AF-coupling and in-plane uniaxial anisotropy. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A series of bcc-Co(001)/Ge/Co trilayers was grown on a GaAs(001) substrate by the molecular beam epitaxy technique. The optical and magneto-optical properties of the samples were studied. An oscillatory variation of the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) with the thickness of the Ge spacers was observed. We conclude that the effective optical constants as well as the real and imaginary off-diagonal element of the dielectric tensor should be considered in explanation of the MOKE activities since both have a large influence on the MOKE oscillations. Moreover, the coercivity and magnetization also oscillate with the Ge layer thickness. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. Objective and Design: We investigated the effect of a new class of COX-2 inhibitor, rutaecarpine, on the production of PGD2 in bone marrow derived mast cells (BMMC) and PGE2 in COX-2 transfected HEK293 cells. Inflammation was induced by γ-carrageenan in male Splague-Dawley (SD) rats.¶Material: Rutaecarpine (8,13-Dihydroindolo[2',3':3,4]pyridol[2,1-b]quinazolin-5(7H)-one) was isolated from the fruits of Evodia rutaecarpa. BMMC were cultured with WEHI-3 conditioned medium. c-Kit ligand and IL-10 were obtained by their expression in baculovirus.¶Methods: The generation of PGD2 and PGE2 were determined by their assay kit. COX-1 and COX-2 protein and mRNA expression was determined by BMMC in the presence of KL, LPS and IL-10.¶Treatment: Rutaecarpine and indomethacin dissolved in 0.1% carboxymethyl cellulose was administered intraperitoneally and, 1h later, γ-carrageenan solution was injected to right hind paw of rats. Paw volumes were measured using plethysmometer 5h after γ-carrageenan injection.¶Results: Rutaecarpine inhibited COX-2 and COX-1 dependent phases of PGD2 generation in BMMC in a concentration-dependent manner with an IC50 of 0.28 μM and 8.7 μM, respectively. It inhibited COX-2-dependent conversion of exogenous arachidonic acid to PGE2 in a dose-dependent manner by the COX-2-transfected HEK293 cells. However, rutaecarpine inhibited neither PLA2 and COX-1 activity nor COX-2 protein and mRNA expression up to the concentration of 30 μM in BMMC, indicating that rutaecarpine directly inhibited COX-2 activity. Furthermore, rutaecarpine showed in vivo anti-inflammatory activity on rat γ-carrageenan induced paw edema by intraperitoneal administration.¶Conclusion: Anti-inflammatory activity of Evodia rutaecarpa could be attributed at least in part by inhibition of COS-2.

    Notes: Summary  The primary objective in the surgery of extra large vestibular schwannoma is the total removal of the tumour mass while preserving the facial nerve. Preservation of the facial nerve in extra large tumours is reported as being notoriously difficult in the majority of cases  This study was undertaken to evaluate the accuracy in predicting displacement of the facial nerve by preoperative radiological imaging studies in 19 cases of extra large vestibular schwannoma. The direction of displacement of the facial nerve was predicted with preoperative axial and coronal MRI scans and verified intra-operatively.  We achieved total removal of tumours in 84.2%, facial nerve displacement was predicted in 80% and we accomplished anatomical preservation in 80%. Prediction of displacement was difficult in tumours with little or no intracanalicular components or with severe bony destruction of the internal acoustic meatus.  The preoperative prediction of facial nerve displacement in extra large tumours allows safe internal decompression of the tumour and careful dissection near the predicted area of the facial nerve during the operation. Consequently, a high rate of anatomical preservation of the facial nerve can be achieved.

    Notes: Abstract Spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is rare in children, especially in newborns and infants, groups in which only very few cases have been reported. Because of the nonspecificity of presenting symptoms in children the diagnosis may be delayed, resulting in major permanent neurological deficits. In this paper, we report a case of cervical SEA in a 6-week-old infant who initially presented with fever and developed quadriparesis 19 days prior to admission. After emergency anterior decompression of the abscess the neurological function was improved immediately. Five months after surgery the neurological status was normal, an MR study showing disappearance of the epidural abscess and spinal cord indentation, and progressive fusion of the C3, C4 and C5 vertebral bodies. Anterior decompression without bone graft can provide an excellent prognosis in case of an anterior cervical SEA in infants.
