    Notes: Abstract Although it is well known that responses to ethologically-relevant odors are influenced by endocrine factors, it has not been clear whether these hormonal effects might be mediated at the level of the peripheral sensory neurons. During an investigation of hormonal pheromones in South-East Asian Cyprinids, we observed that in adult male Puntius schwanenfeldi, an androgen-dependent sex character was correlated with electro-olfactogram response to a putative sex pheromone (15-keto-prostaglandin-F2α ). As secondary sex characteristics are androgen-dependent in male teleosts, this observation suggested a functional relationship between androgen and peripheral olfactory receptor response. We therefore investigated this possibility using androgen implants. In laboratory-raised juveniles, androgen treatment increased the magnitude and sensitivity of electro-olfactogram response to prostaglandin without affecting responses to other odors. Furthermore, androgen-treated juveniles performed pheromone-dependent sex behavior in the presence of a prostaglandin-injected stimulus fish. For the first time in vertebrates, the present data demonstrate hormone-induced plasticity of primary chemosensory neuronal responsiveness to an ethologically relevant compound.

    Notes: Abstract. Over the past two decades, some very efficient techniques for the numerical solution of partial differential equations have been developed. We are especially interested in adaptive local grid refinement on unstructured meshes, multigrid solvers and parallelization techniques. Up to now, these innovative techniques have been implemented mostly in university research codes and only very few commercial codes use them. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, the multigrid solution and adaptive refinement for many engineering applications are still a topic of active research and cannot be considered to be mature enough for routine application. Secondly, the implementation of all these techniques in a code with sufficient generality requires a lot of time and know-how in different fields. UG (abbreviation for Unstructured Grids) has been designed to overcome these problems. It provides very general tools for the generation and manipulation of unstructured meshes in two and three space dimensions as well as a flexible data layout. Therefore, it can serve on the one hand as a tool for exploring new algorithms and, on the other hand, a whole range of algorithms already implemented can be applied to complex problems. In this paper, we show the software design structure of UG and explore some of the subsystems in more detail. Finally, we try to illustrate the capabilities of the approach with several non–trivial examples.

    Notes: Abstract Sheep are being extensively utilized in animal models for orthopaedic research, but the vascular anatomy of their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) has not yet been thoroughly described. This study demonstrates the blood supply to the ACL. Vascular injection with plastogen G, lead oxide and India ink was performed in 12 back limbs of Styrian mountain sheep, and gross observations, microradiography and routine histology were done. The large vessel and the microvascular anatomy are similar to those described for humans. The middle genicular artery and the descending genicular artery contribute vessels that supply the ACL. Epiligamentous vascular plexuses give off capillaries which penetrate the ligament substance and supply numerous, longitudinally oriented intraligamentous vessels. These findings make the Styrian mountain sheep a potential animal model for biologic investigations of ACL pathology.

    Notes: Abstract Candida bombicola produces glycolipids containing sophorose and a glycosidically/esterically bound ω- or (ω−1)-hydroxy C16(18) acid. Here we describe novel glycolipids from this source. Glucose and 2-dodecanol were used for the cultivation of the yeast, one part of the racemic secondary alcohol being connected directly with a glucose or a sophorose unit. A relatively high content of yeast extract, up to 4 g l−1, and subsequently higher biomass concentrations favoured the production of novel products. The provision of 150 g l−1 glucose and 15 g l−1 2-dodecanol resulted in maximum production of 22 g l−1 novel alkyl glycosides (more than 90% novel products). The molecular structures were analysed by gas chromatography, fast atom bombardment/mass spectrometry, 1H- and 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance and optical rotation studies. Sophorose and glucose were detected as carbohydrate moieties, (S)-(+)-2-dodecanol (88%) was found to be the major lipid moiety. The new glycolipids are suitable biosurfactants, reducing the surface tension of water from 72 mN m−1 to 32–38 mN m−1.

    Notes: Abstract The bacterium Tsukamurella sp. nov., isolated from soil, was found to produce novel glycolipids when grown on sunflower oil as the sole carbon source. The glycolipids were isolated by chromatography on silica columns and their structures elucidated using a combination of multidimensional NMR and MS techniques. The three main components are 2,3-di-O-acyl-α-d-glucopyranosyl-(1-1)-α-d-glucopyranose, 2,3-di-O-acyl-β-d-glucopyranosyl-(1-2)-4,6-di-O-acyl-α-d-glucopyranosyl-(1-1)-α-d-glucopyranose and 2,3-di-O-acyl-β-d-glucopyranosyl-(1-2)-β-d-galactopyranosyl-(1-6)-4,6-di-O-acyl-α-d-glucopyranosyl-(1-1)-α-d-glucopyranosl which are linked to fatty acids varying in chain length from C4 to C18. The glycolipids are mainly extracellular but are also found attached to the cell walls. During the cultivation the composition of the glycolipids changed from disaccharide- to tri- and tetrasaccharide lipids. The glycolipids show good surface-active behaviour and have antimicrobial properties.

    Notes: Abstract Biosurfactants containing rhamnose and β-hydroxydecanoic acid and called rhamnolipids are reviewed with respect to microbial producers, their physiological role, biosynthesis and genetics, and especially their microbial overproduction, physicochemical properties and potential applications. With Pseudomonas species, more than 100 g l−1 rhamnolipids were produced from 160 g l−1 soybean oil at a volumetric productivity of 0.4 g l−1 h−1. The individual rhamnolipids are able to lower the surface tension of water from 72 mN m−1 to 25–30 mN m−1 at concentrations of 10–200 mg l−1. After initial testing, rhamnolipids seem to have potential applications in combating marine oil pollution, removing oil from sand and in combating zoosporic phytopathogens. Rhamnolipids are also a source of l-rhamnose, which is already used for the industrial production of high-quality flavor components.
