Notes: Abstract We have studied the oscillatory shear response of three thermotropic smectic-A liquid crystalline materials with no external aligning field (other than the necessary presence of rheometer plates). Two are polymers (one main-chain and one side-chain) and the other is a small molecule smectic. All three exhibit the classical linear response to oscillatory shear characteristic of a viscoelastic solid at sufficiently small strain amplitudes and frequencies. However, for strain amplitudes exceeding a small critical value, these materials exhibit a strongly nonlinear response to strain, which is characterized in detail. While the low-strain moduli and the critical strain of the three smectics are considerably different, the nonlinear response has some universal character which is presumably related to the low energy for the formation of defects in smectic liquid crystals.

Notes: The attractive physical properties of cyanate ester resins make these materials an important class of high-performance polymer thermosets for applications such as electro-optic coatings and thin film dielectrics. Triazine networks have been used as insulating materials for over 25 years; however, in order to meet future requirements such materials must exhibit appropriate glass transition temperatures, high thermal stability, high moduli, good adhesion at elevated temperatures, low dielectric losses, and a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). With our approach to thermoset design and processing we are able to directly control their mechanical and physical properties by curing new liquid crystalline cyanate ester resins in electric fields. Combining new LC materials with non-LC cyanate monomers leads to a variety of novel ordered network structures and is a convenient method for modifying and controlling their chemical and physical properties. Studies of the new LC thermosets and their mixtures with non-LC materials will be described.

Notes: A series of new liquid crystalline (LC) poly(vinyl ether)s with different molar masses was synthesized via a two-step procedure involving the preparation of functional matrices by living cationic polymerization of an ω-chloroalkyl vinyl ether monomer followed by a grafting reaction of an azobenzene mesogenic unit onto them. By appropriately adjusting the experimental conditions, it was possible to predetermine the molar mass characteristics of the LC polymers. Each of the parent and modified poly(vinyl ether)s had a narrow molar mass distribution. The LC polymers were semicrystalline and formed a nematic mesophase, enantiotropic or monotropic in character. The transition temperatures increased with increasing molar mass up to a limiting value and then remained nearly constant. Accordingly, poly(vinyl ether)s with predetermined molar mass and narrow molar mass distribution could be prepared.

Notes: The phase and orientational behaviors of a series of liquid crystalline (LC) AB-type diblock copolymers comprising thermotropic main-chain (MC) polyester and side-group (SG) polymethacrylate blocks were investigated by X-ray diffraction. The MC and SG blocks were phase separated and gave rise to their individual mesophases that coexisted at equilibrium. The samples were oriented by using either a magnetic field or a mechanical field. In magnetically aligned samples both the MC and SG microphases were oriented with their smectic planes orthogonal to the magnetic field direction, independent of the copolymer composition. Mechanically aligned, fiber samples showed different orientations of the MC and SG smectic planes for different sample compositions. In this case the disposition of the smectic planes of the MC and SG blocks was driven by the relative length of the two blocks. Some features of the X-ray patterns of the copolymers were compared to those of the MC and SG homopolymers. In addition, the MC smectic domains crystallized on annealing without affecting the orientation that had been achieved by applying a magnetic field. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: A core - shell microsphere sample prepared by dispersion polymerization using a polyacid as the steric stabilizer was studied for its endopectinlyase and endopolygalacturonase adsorption behavior. The endopectinlyase adsorption yield decreases with increasing the medium pH, whereas the opposite behavior is observed for the endopolygalacturonase adsorption yield. This opposite adsorption tendency is correlated to the microsphere surface nature which was proved to be hydrophilic according to the medium pH.

Notes: The phase behavior of liquid - crystalline (LC) block copolymers containing mesomorphic blocks with main chain (MC) units and side-group (SG) substituents was investigated. The MC block consisted of an LC semiflexible polyester and the SG block was an LC polymethacrylate. Four different samples were prepared with the content of the SG blocks varying from 35 to 79 wt%. The thermal behavior of the copolymers was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction was used to characterize the phase structure. Both the MC and SG blocks formed smectic A and nematic mesophases. Thus, the occurrence of distinct and well-defined phase transitions clearly indicated that MC and SG blocks were phase-separated and showed their own phase behavior. Two different endothermic processes were identified in annealed samples that followed different kinetics. The low-temperature process is thought to involve the MC blocks in their own domains and was observed up to the smectic A to nematic transition temperature of these blocks. The hightemperature process involves the interface between MC and SG domains and is probably due to melting of crystallites grown during annealing. It is shown that the crystallization develops with kinetics affected by the degree of order of the LC state of the SG domains.
