    Notes: Abstract  The influence of tree leaf amendment and N fertilization on soil quality in turfgrass environments was evaluated. Our objective was to assess changes in soil quality after additions of leaf materials and N fertilization by monitoring soil chemical and physical parameters, microbial biomass and soil enzymes. Established perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) plots were amended annually with maple (Acer spp.) leaves at three different rates (0, 2240, and 4480 kg ha–1 year–1) and treated with three nitrogen rates (0, 63, and 126 kg N ha–1 year–1). Tree leaf mulching did not significantly affect water infiltration or bulk density. However, trends in the data suggest increased infiltration with increasing leaf application rate. Tree leaf mulching increased total soil C and N at 0–1.3 cm depth but not at 1.3–9.0 cm. Extracted microbial phospholipid, an indicator of microbial biomass size, ranged from 28 to 68 nmol phospholipid g–1 soil at the 1.3–9.0 cm depth. The activity of β-glucosidase estimated on samples from 0–1.3 cm and 1.3–9.0 cm depths, and dehydrogenase activity estimated on samples from 1.3–9.0 cm were significantly increased by leaf mulching and N fertilizer application. Changes in microbial community composition, as indicated by phospholipid fatty acid methyl ester analysis, appear to be due to seasonal variations and did not reflect changes due to N or leaf amendment treatments. There were no negative effects of tree leaf mulching into turfgrass and early data suggest this practice will improve soil chemical, physical, and biological structure.

    Notes: Abstract Growth failure is an important consequence of chronic liver disease in childhood. Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), which is synthesized and released by the liver, plays an important role as a growth regulator in humans. We examined the growth hormone (GH)/IGF-I axis before and after orthotopic liver transplantation (LT) in 14 children aged between 2 and 11 years (mean 5.6 ± 1.1 years). Pre-transplantation serum GH levels (7.5 ± 1.2 ng/ml) were significantly higher (P 〈 0.001) compared with controls (5 ± 0.5 ng/ml). However, post-transplantation levels (1.8 ± 0.8 ng/ml) did not differ from those in the control group. Serum IGF-I levels showed a statistically significant increase after LT (20.1 ± 9.4 vs 190 ± 66.2 ng/ml; P 〈 0.001) and became indistinguishable from the levels in the control group (180 ± 96 ng/ml). In comparison with pre-transplantation data (z− 2.70), there was an increase in height 4 years postoperatively (z− 1.68). Catch-up growth was highly significant, in particular during the 1st year after LT (z−1.58 ± 1.63 vs 2.59 ± 5.29; P 〈 0.01). We conclude that a GH resistance state found in patients with severe chronic liver disease reverted following LT. Given that IGF-1 depends upon liver function, this could be one of the main factors in the significant catch-up growth in pediatric LT recipients.

    Notes: Abstract. We present a patient with nodular regenerative hyperplasia of the liver (NRH) and portal vein absence studied with CT, MR imaging, and MR angiography. The most striking feature was exuberant hemorrhoids due to a giant hepatofugal inferior mesenteric vein. A relationship between unbalanced portal blood flow and nodular regenerative transformation of the liver is suggested in this patient.

    Notes: Abstract In order to determine K IC in a simplified form, rectangular pieces of glass were scratched with a glazier's diamond, considering this scratch as the crack tip. The sides of the crack were made by sticking two rectangular pieces of proper thickness with epoxy resin as was made in a previous work. The K IC was determined in glass in which the cracks are impregnated with liquid solutions of kerosene, sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate. For the samples impregnated with kerosene the mean value of K IC remains constant, whereas for the other two solutions a decrease in the mean value of K IC is observed, a 10% in samples impregnated with sodium hydroxide and 16% in samples impregnated with sodium silicate, when comparing them with their respective groups of samples of glass without impregnating. The corresponding Weibull diagrams were made and Weibull functions of three parameters were obtained. The respective parameters of the probability distribution functions of K IC were estimated by means of the graphic method of nomograms.

    Notes: Abstract Radioactive elements may be retained by clays. The ability of natural Mexican clays to retain radioactive Co from aqueous solutions, is discussed. Experiments were performed with solutions containing labeled cobalt. The effect of contact time on Co2+ retention was studied. It was found that the Co2+ uptake value in dehydrated montmorillonites is between 0.30 and 0.70 meq g−1 of clay. A sorption sequence was obtained for the various clays. The samples were characterized, before and after cobalt exchange, by X-ray diffraction.

    Notes: Abstract A semi-empirical model has been developed to quantify the interelemental effects in X-ray fluorescence analysis. The measured X-ray fluorescence intensity has been expressed as a function of the different fluorescence elements composing the sample. this complex function has become an operative function via a Taylor series development. An explication has been given for the significance of the different terms of the series. These terms respond to mathematical functions known as characteristic functions for each chemical system. A parameter (B) has been defined which makes it possible to quantify the influence of the interelemental effect as a function of the analyte concentration (C) and that of the concomitant elements. The proposed model has been applied to the Fe-Zr-diluent chemical system. Simple relationships between B vs C have been obtained independently considering iron or zirconium as analyte.
