    Notes: A large angle, multichannel ultraviolet Thomson scattering diagnostic was developed to study ion-acoustic waves in laser-produced high-density plasma. The time evolution of the spectral density function of the ion-acoustic wave (IAW) was measured by the scattering system. When a weak IAW was excited, the measured spectrum had a well-defined narrow peak, which was consistent with plasma parameters predicted by computer simulations assuming an electron transport flux limit of 0.1. The spectrum of the IAW was quite different, and broad, when it was excited strongly. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have measured and analyzed the second harmonic emission, both in the plane of the laser electric field and perpendicular to it, at several angles near 135° from the laser wave vector. The experiments used from 1 to 80 J of 1.053 μm light to irradiate carbon–hydrogen (CH) targets with a 550 ps pulse. A random phase plate was used, producing characteristic intensities in the range of 1013–1014 W/cm2. This was sufficient to drive the Ion Acoustic Decay Instability, producing Stokes emission well-separated from the emission spike at the second harmonic of the laser frequency. The spectral structure of the Stokes emission was qualitatively similar for all intensities and angles of observation. The duration of the signals showed trends anticipated from linear theory. To explain the scaling of the signal strength and spectral width requires nonlinear theory. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The anomalous attenuation length of the laser light due to the ion-acoustic decay instability (IADI) can be much smaller than the instability width with a relatively weak laser intensity (Iλ2∼1014 W μm2/cm2) in a large-scale plasma. An instability width of only a few laser wavelengths is sufficient to absorb most of the laser energy. Two-dimensional electromagnetic computer simulation results and experimental results are consistent with strong absorption by the IADI. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report a new case of multiple minute digitate hyperkeratoses after postmastectomy irradiation therapy for mammary cancer. This is the first case of multiple minute digitate hyperkeratoses in an Asian country as well as the third report of the disorder after irradiation. The characteristic eruption, the consistent trigger of irradiation and its occurrence in patients of different racial groups indicate that multiple minute digitate hyperkeratoses are a distinct clinical entity.

    Notes: Abstract To investigate the mechanism of synovial pannus formation in rheumatoid arthritis, immunohistochemical and immunoelectron microscopic studies with monoclonal antibodies against the adhesion molecules, CD54 (ICAM-1), CD 11a (LFA-1), CDw49a (VLA-1), CDw49b (VLA-2), CDw49c (VLA-3), Cdw49d (VLA-4) and CDw49e (VLA-5), were carried out to determine the pattern of distribution of these molecules at the rheumatoid synovial cartilage junction. Treatment with anti-ICAM-1 resulted in membrane staining of most of the macrophages and fibroblasts infiltrating the synovial tissue and bordering the pannus-cartilage junction, suggesting the possibility that ICAM-1 may function to facilitate the adhesion of synovial type A cells bearing ICAM-1 to type B cells of the pannus. ICAM-1-positive macrophages and fibroblasts were often found to be in contact with lymphoid cells, suggesting also that a cellular immune reaction occurs in the formation of the pannus. In addition, VLA-3, VLA-4 and, particularly, VLA-5 were the predominantβ1 integrins expressed by rheumatoid synovial pannus. Since these three integrins all function as fibronectin receptors, it is possible that the fibronectin-rich environment of the rheumatoid cartilage surface effectively traps pannus cells expressing high levels of these molecules. The VLA-5 molecule was found in a pericellular and interterritorial matrix distribution in the present study, strongly suggesting that a recepfor-ligand interaction between VLA-5 and cartilage matrix may occur at the early stage of pannus formation. Furthermore, an increase inβ1 integrin may be necessary for the growth of the pannus and also for the upregulation of the VLA molecules, leading secondarily to increased attachment.

    Notes: Abstract The present study was undertaken to investigate whether neural activity of hippocampal slices can be preserved after replacingd-glucose with glycolytic intermediate metabolites such as lactate, pyruvate and citrate or with other sugars such as fructose, mannose, maltose, glucosamine, sucrose and galactose. As an index of neural activity, population spikes (PS) were recorded in the granule cell layers after electrical stimulation to the perforant path of guinea pig hippocampal slices. In addition, we determined the levels of ATP and creatine phosphate (CrP) in each slice after the replacement ofd-glucose with these substrates, and correlated it with the neural activity. Substrates other thand-glucose could not maintain the PS for even 20 min although the slices perfused with medium containing lactate, pyruvate, galactose, fructose and maltose maintained similar levels of ATP and CrP as in slices incubated in thed-glucose-containing medium. These results indicate thatd-glucose is essential for the preservation of synaptic activity in addition to its main role as the substrate for energy production to maintain the levels of high energy phosphates.

    Notes: Summary.  A chimpanzee was immunized with two recombinant envelope glycoproteins E1 and E2 of hepatitis C virus (HCV), strain HCV-N2, and the hypervariable region 1 (HVR1) peptides of a different isolate, HCV-#6, then received an intravenous inoculation of 10 chimpanzee infectious doses of HCV-#6. With high humoral immune response against E1 and E2 but a low response against HVR1, the vaccinee became infected with the HCV. However, after increasing the titer of anti-HVR1 against HCV-#6, the vaccinee showed protection. Neutralization of HCV-#6 with the antiserum from this protected vaccinee was achieved by inoculation of this mixture into another chimpanzee. These results suggest that vaccination with a peptide-vaccine of homologous HVR1 is effective in the chimpanzee.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on the healing of partial anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) lacerations was investigated in 17 adult mongrel canines. The defect was created in the midsubstance of both ACLs using a biopsy punch. In the bFGF group, a bFGF-impregnated pellet was sutured to the infrapatellar fat pad close to the defect. In the control group, the same pellet without bFGF was used. The healing process was evaluated macroscopically and histologically at 1, 3, 6, and 24 weeks postoperatively. In the bFGF group, a pannus-like tissue which contained abundant blood vessels extended into the defect from the adjacent synovial tissue in the early postoperative phase. Histological examination of the tissue which filled the defect revealed initial remodeling processes with a decreased number of cells and better orientation of the collagen fibers at 6–24 weeks. On the other hand, in the control group, poor healing processes were observed at each examination period. This study demonstrated that the application of a bFGF-impregnated pellet may enhance the healing potential of a partially injured ACL. Enhanced neovascularization and the formation of granulation tissue induced by bFGF early in the healing process accounted for the increased healing response.

    Notes: Abstract Twentyfour meniscal allotransplantations were conducted in 12 adult mongrel dogs. The medial meniscus was replaced using a deep-frozen meniscal allograft. The junction between the meniscus and capsule was treated in one of the three ways. In the control group, the meniscus was sutured only to the adjacent capsular tissue (group C). In the second group, fibrin glue was injected at the junction (group F), and in the third group, fibrin glue and endothelial cell growth factor (ECGF) were injected at the juncture between the transplanted meniscus and the adjacent capsule before the meniscus was sutured (group FE). Histological observation was performed to investigate the effect of fibrin glue and ECGF on the healing process of transplants at various intervals of 1, 4, 8 and 12 weeks. No immunological response was noted in any of the knees. The healing of the transplanted meniscus was first observed at the peripheral attachment. Also, the pannus-like tissue extended from the synovium to the surface of the meniscus. The healing rate in each group at 1 week and 12 weeks was 22% and 77% in group C, 52% and 80% in group F, and 64% and 80% in group FE, respectively. At 4 and 8 weeks, early cellular repopulation was found in group FE and the area which contained new cells was larger than the acellular central core at 8 weeks. However, there was no difference among the three groups at 12 weeks. The early stage of regeneration of the transplanted meniscus seemed to be accelerated by the use of fibrin glue and ECGF; however, they had little influence on the long-term results. Few cells were found in the central portion of the transplanted meniscus even at 12 weeks.
