    Notes: Abstract The analytical literature about chromium speciation in solid samples has been surveyed. From 451 articles published on the speciation of chromium from 1983 to 1997, the methodologies to do speciation in solids after sample pretreatment are discussed, through consideration of the types of samples and their dissolution, the analytical techniques employed for chromium measurement, and the figures of merit of the 86 papers reported in the Analytical Abstracts data base.

    Notes: Abstract. The objective of this study was to evaluate the appearance of localized giant cell tumour of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) on unenhanced and Gd-enhanced MR images. MR images of 13 histologically proven cases of localized GCTTS were evaluated for mean size, location, homogeneity and signal intensity (SI) on both T1- and T2-weighted images, and enhancement pattern. All lesions except 1 affected young adults. On T1- and T2-weighted images, lesions showed predominantly low SI equal to or slightly higher than skeletal muscle. On Gd-enhanced T1-weighted images, strong homogeneous enhancement was seen. These findings reflect the underlying histological composition of the lesion; haemosiderin deposition in xanthoma cells, shortening T2-relaxation time, and abundant collagenous proliferation are responsible for low SI on T1- and T2-weighted images. Strong homogeneous enhancement originates from numerous proliferative capillaries in the collagenous stroma. We conclude that these characteristic MR features, together with clinical information, are a valuable diagnostic tool in offering a correct preoperative diagnosis.

    Notes: Abstract A series of SiO2−TiO2 sol-gel films with and without heat treatment were analyzed by EXAFS and XANES spectroscopies. Both techniques indicate that essentially all Ti4+ ions remain four-fold coordinated, with a Ti−O bond distance between 1.82–1.85 Å. In the glassy films produced by heat treatment at 900°C, a gradual phase separation may occur at the nanoscale, as the TiO2 concentration of the films increases.

    Notes: Abstract Blastocladiella emersonii contains a single cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), which is similar to the mammalian type II isoforms. Its activity is regulated during development by changes in the levels of the catalytic (C) and regulatory (R) subunits, which occur in parallel with changes in levels of the corresponding mRNAs, suggesting coordinate transcriptional control of the expression of both subunits. Both R and C mRNA levels are low in vegetative cells, rise sharply during sporulation and decrease to basal levels again after germination. To investigate sequence elements common to both Blastocladiella R and C gene promoters, which might be involved in the coordinate regulation of these genes, their 5′-flanking regions were analyzed by gel mobility shift and DNase I footprinting assays. We determined that different DNA-protein complexes are generated when fragments of the R and C gene promoters are incubated with extracts from cells expressing (sporulating cells) or not expressing (vegetative cells) both subunits, and competition experiments suggested that similar protein factors bind to both promoters. DNase I footprinting experiments have indicated that a sequence common to both R and C promoters, and similar to mammalian E-boxes, binds factors present in extracts from vegetative and sporulating cells, whereas sequences flanking the E-boxes in both promoters showed a change in the pattern of DNase I digestion only when the vegetative cell extract was used. This result suggests that the composition of the protein complexes binding to these regions changes during sporulation.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of CCl4 on positronium (Ps) formation is examined in isooctane through positron lifetime spectroscopy experiments, in the framework of a series of studies on AOT-based reverse micellar systems. This solute appears as a rather strong Ps formation inhibitor, as expected in view of its well-known electron scavenging properties. The reciprocal of the triplet Ps intensity (1/I 3) varies linearly with CCl4 concentration (C), up to about 0.08M, allowing to derive a high inhibition constant,k=36.6M−1. Above 0.08M, however, the inhibition slackens out, which is attributed to an anti-inhibition effect. On the basis of previous reports on halocompounds, a general scheme of reactions is proposed to occur in the positron spur, including, besides the primary Ps formation through thee +/e− reaction and the recombination reactions, electron scavenging by CCl4 as the direct inhibiting reaction, followed by the reaction of the thus formed anion with the positron. The latter reaction may lead either to a [CCl4Ps] bound-state or, if the positron picks off the electron from the anion, to some additional Ps formation. By using a simple quantitative approach to this scheme, an equation descriptive of the variation ofI 3 withC is derived which agrees well with the experimental data.

    Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with the existence of a minimum in a Sobolev space for the functional $$F_g (x): = \int_0^T {g(x(t)){\text{ }}dt + \int_0^T {h(x'(t)){\text{ }}dt,{\text{ }}x(0) = a,{\text{ }}x(T) = b,} }$$ wherea,b are real numbers,g is a continuous map, andh is lower semicontinuous, satisfying adequate growth conditions. As shown by Cellina and Mariconda, there exists a dense subset of the space of continuous functions bounded below such that, forg in this subset, the above functional attains its minimum no matter whichh is used. This subset contains in particular the monotone maps, as shown by Marcellini, and the concave maps, as shown by Cellina and Colombo. Our aim is twofold: first to show that this subset, although dense, is meager in the sense of the Baire category; and second to show that it contains a class of functions which we call concave-monotone, because it generalizes both the classes of concave and of monotone functions.

    Notes: An electrochemical method for the determination of the anticancer platinum drug carboplatin using a DNA-modified electrode was developed. This electrode was successfully used for the electrochemical determination of carboplatin in serum samples of patients with ovarian cancer undergoing treatment. The electrochemical results clearly demonstrated that, for low concentrations, carboplatin interacts preferentially with adenine rather than guanine groups in the DNA and they can contribute to clarifying the mechanisms of interaction of platinum anticancer drugs with DNA. The pharmacokinetics corresponding to the administration of the drug was followed electrochemically and the detection limit in serum samples was 5.7 × 10 -6M. Due to a similar mechanism of reaction with DNA other platinum anticancer drugs can be determined by this method.
