Notes: High spatial resolution time-resolved photoluminescence has been used to study GaInAs/GaInAsP quantum-well structures selectively intermixed using the pulsed photoabsorption-induced disordering technique. Photoluminescence decay measurements at wavelengths (approximately-greater-than)1.3 μm were obtained using novel high-efficiency photon-counting detectors and were found to correlate spatially with the observed luminescence blue shift in these structures. Results indicate a reduction in the nonradiative recombination time of nearly two orders of magnitude as a result of this intermixing technique. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by accumulation of mononuclear cells. The pathogenesis of MS is complex and probably involves soluble immune mediators, particularly cytokines, and activated memory T cells, that are thought to migrate into the CNS. During lesion formation in MS, cytokines regulate cell functions, such as cell recruitment and migration. Because the chemokine RANTES play a role in both activating and recruiting leucocytes, particularly memory T cells into inflammatory sites, the authors have assessed RANTES mRNA levels at the site of lesions. Expression levels were analysed in brain samples and compared with neurological, infectious and other controls. RANTES was expressed by activated perivascular memory T cells, predominantly located at the edge of active plaques. While RANTES mRNA was detected in all 17 MS brains analysed, it was only found in six of the 14 control patients and generally at a lower expression level. In view of the regulatory and chemotactic properties of RANTES, these results imply that RANTES in MS lesions may play an important role in the activation and/or selective accumulation of memory T cells and, thereby, in the pathogenic events associated with MS.

Notes: The durability of photocured resins adhered to ceramic substrates has been investigated. Monochromated XPS and time-of-flight SIMS were employed to determine the precise locus of failure in butt-joints comprised of a photocured resin adhered to either a 96% pure, debased alumina substrate or single-crystal silicon. Prolonged (〉 14 days) immersion in water at 50°C resulted in cohesive failure, with 1-2 nm of polymer remaining on one of the ceramic substrates. An absence in the spectrum of any components attributable to characteristic groups from a major constituent of the polymer within this overlayer suggested the possibility that one of the minor resin components was aggregating at the organic/inorganic interface to produce an in situ weak boundary layer. The interactions of some of the organic molecules present in the formulation with the α-alumina substrate were investigated using molecular modelling techniques to indicate the most favourable interactions with the substrate. Durability studies were also carried out on a reformulated photocured resin to investigate the effect of removal of the ethoxylated methacrylate monomer, suspected of being the principal organic component at the weak boundary layer, on both joint performance and locus of failure.
