    Notes: Abstract A new local coordinate system is introduced for the assumed strain formulation so that the resulting shell element can pass both the patch test and the locking test. The coordinate system is tested by implementing it in two nine-node assumed strain shell elements. The elements adopting the new local coordinate system not only pass various patch tests successfully but also perform well in locking tests.

    Notes: Abstract A method is presented for maximum strength optimum design of symmetric composite laminates subjected to in-plane and transverse loadings. The finite element method based on shear deformation theory is used for the analysis of composite laminates. Ply orientation angles are chosen as design variables. The quadratic failure criterion which is meant to predict fracture, is used as an object function for optimum stacking sequence design of a laminated plate. The Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno optimization technique is employed to solve the optimization problem effectively. Numerical results are given for various loading conditions, boundary conditions, and aspect ratios. The results show that the quadratic failure criterion such as Tsai-Hill theory is effective for the optimum structural design of composite laminates.

    Notes: Abstract Tests of cross-ply composite tubes were performed under combined axial and torsional loading up to failure. Strength properties and failure mechanisms were evaluated with reference to the biaxiality ratio of the loading. The scattering of the biaxial strength data was analyzed using the Weibull distribution. The axial contraction of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) tubes under biaxial loading was investigated theoretically and experimentally. Artificial neural networks were introduced to predict the failure strength using the algorithm of the error back-propagation. The prediction was also made by the Tsai-Wu theory using the experimental data and by the combined optimized tensor-polynomial theory. A comparison shows that the artificial neural network has the smallest root-mean square (RMS) error of the three prediction methods. The prediction of the axial contraction of the tubes correlates well with the results of a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) of the testing machine. From the phenomenological analysis of the failure and the fractographic observations of the fracture surface, three types of failure modes and microscopic failure were investigated, depending on the biaxiality ratio, and the corresponding failure mechanisms are suggested.

    Notes: Abstract A series of papers have been published which describe the influence of vegetation and soil type on the Western Australian wheatbelt termite,Drepanotermes tamminensis (Hill), and also on its litter harvesting levels and contribution to the soil nutrient budget. This paper integrates these findings by means of a computer simulation model. The model consists of three modules which respectively describe the dynamics of litter on the ground, the dynamics of litter within termite mounds and how these in turn influence nutrient loads within the habitat. The outputs of the model suggest that this litter harvesting termite plays an important role in the nutrient dynamics of the area and it provides an estimate of the unmeasured variable, litter consumed in mounds by termites, which is consistent with measurements for other termite species with similar feeding habits.

    Notes: Abstract The nucleation and crystallization kinetics of CaO-Al2O3-2SiO2 crystals in powdered anorthite glass with particle size 〈44 μm in which CaO-Al2O3-2SiO2 crystals were found to crystallize in the heating process of the glass, were studied by nonisothermal measurements using differential thermal analysis (DTA). The temperature of maximum nucleation rate was determined from the DTA curves of samples heat treated at different temperatures. The activation energy and kinetic parameters were simultaneously calculated from the DTA data using previously reported kinetic models. The crystallization process of a sample heat treated at the temperature of the maximum nucleation rate was fitted to kinetic equations with an Avrami constant, n≅2 and a dimensionality of crystal growth, m≅2, indicating that the constant number of nuclei of CaO-Al2O3-2SiO2 precipitated in a glass matrix grew two-dimensionally with an activation energy taken as an average of the values calculated by the Kissinger and also the Augis and Bennett method of 679±4 kJ mol−1.

    Notes: Abstract The sintering and microstructure development of magnesia containing 0–10 wt% TiO2 at temperatures in the range 1300–1600°C have been investigated. The addition of TiO2 markedly promoted densification at relatively low temperature, and grain growth. Excess TiO2 over the solid solubility limit of TiO2 (0.3 wt%) reacted with magnesia to form inter- and intra-granular magnesium titanate (Mg2TiO4) above 1300°C. The grain size of MgO increased with increasing TiO2 content, and densification was mainly governed by MgO grain growth. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers
