    Notes: Availability of auxiliary equipment for coal-based power plants is very important for the achievement of maximum generation and the improvement of plant load factor (PLF). In this context a realistic maintenance programme based on plant-specific failure data will help to achieve an optimum performance level. Reliability-centred maintenance (RCM) is a recent technique which is limited to a few areas and has implementation difficulties. Presents a realistic RCM-based maintenance methodology for coal-based power plant auxiliaries. Applies the methodology to the bowl mill, an item of auxiliary equipment. Presents results and savings that have been achieved with the application of the methodology.

    Notes: The model given by Levine has been extended to account for the effects of moisture, salt and fat through appropriate modifications based on theory and computational experience. Appropriate modifications to consistency index and flow behavior index as a function of moisture, salt and fat are given. the thickness of sheeted dough has been modeled as a function of gap, reduction ratio and the flow behavior index which constitutes an important contribution. the model so modified was fitted to experimental data on power consumption in sheeting dough prepared from two flour types, viz., whole wheat flour and resultant atta, respectively, at five combinations of gap and reduction ratios and three levels each of moisture, salt and fat (conforming to actual use ranges) using Nelder-Mead algorithm for nonlinear optimization. These models provided 12 constants for each flour type which gave fundamental information on the dough properties for each flour type. Three-dimensional graphics have been used to interpret the model. These models appear to be of much practical use.

    Notes: Black pepper (Piper nigrum L) was ground to different particle sizes at ambient conditions, and the ground material temperatures at the mills’outlet were recorded. The surface mean diameter (ds) and geometric mean diameter (dga) of the pepper grits were determined by sieve analysis. Energy for size reduction was computed using Bond's equation. The quantity of essential oil distilled, using Clevenger's method, was recorded at 30 minutes interval for each particle size. Effective diffusion coefficient (D) determined using Fick's second law, was constant (1.38 × 10−11 m2s−1) for higher oil concentrations and it was very less in lower oil concentrations. The essential oil yield was evaluated in terms of four major compounds using gas chromatographic analysis. The particle size (dgo) of about 0.7 mm was found to be optimal for distillation of essential oil.
