    Notes: Measurements of the absolute detection efficiency of a commercial microchannel plate detector for kilo-electron volt energy ions are presented. The detector comprises two microchannel plates mounted in front of a resistive anode. It is found that when the detector is appropriately biased, and the ion impact energy is sufficiently high, ions with masses up to 131 amu are detected with equal efficiency and that this efficiency may remain constant over a period of years. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Experiments were set up at two sites to measure nitrogen (N) leaching loss from applications of separated pig/cattle slurry and cattle farmyard manure(FYM), during winters 1990/91–1993/94 (site A) and from broiler litter and FYM, during winters 1990/91–1992/93 (site B). The manures were applied at a target rate of 200 kg ha-1 total N during the autumn and winter to overwinter fallow or top dressed onto winter rye. The total N in leachate was calculated from leachate N concentrations, in samples collected using ceramic cups buried at 90 cm, and an estimate of drainage volume. Nitrogen losses were greatest following manure applications in September, October and November but losses following applications in December or January were not significantly elevated above those from untreated controls. Losses were consistently lower from FYM than from broiler litter or separated slurry. The presence of a cover crop (winter rye) significantly reduced overall N leaching compared with the fallow, but only reduced the manure N leaching losses at one site during one winter when a high proportion of drainage occurred late. The incorporation of a nitrification inhibitor (DCD) with manures applied in October did not significantly reduce the manure N leaching.

    Notes: Abstract. Increases in the atmospheric concentrations of nitrous oxide (N2O) contribute to global warming and to ozone depletion in the stratosphere. Nitric oxide (NO) is a cause of acid rain and tropospheric ozone. The use of N fertilizers in agriculture has direct and indirect effects on the emissions of both these gases, which are the result of microbial nitrification and denitrification in the soil, and which are controlled principally by soil water and mineral N contents, temperature and labile organic matter.The global emission of N2O from cultivated land is now estimated at 3.5 TgN annually, of which 1.5 Tg has been directly attributed to synthetic N fertilizers, out of a total quantity applied in 1990 of about 77Tg N. This amount was 150% above the 1970 figure. The total fertilizer-induced emissions of NO are somewhere in the range 0.5-5 Tg N. Mineral N fertilizers can also be indirect as well as direct sources of N2O and NO emissions, via deposition of volatilized NH3 on natural ecosystems and denitrification of leached nitrate in subsoils, waters and sediments.IPCC currently assume an N2O emission factor of 1.25 ± 1.0% of fertilizer N applied. No allowance is made for different fertilizer types, on the basis that soil management and cropping systems, and unpredictable rainfall inputs, are more important variables. However, recent results show substantial reductions in emissions from grassland by matching fertilizer type to environmental conditions, and in arable systems by using controlled release fertilizers and nitrification inhibitors. Also, better timing and placement of N, application of the minimum amount of N to achieve satisfactory yield, and optimization of soil physical conditions, particularly avoidance of excessive wetness and compaction, would be expected to reduce the average emission factor for N2O. Some of these adjustments would also reduce NO emissions. However, increasing global fertilizer use is likely to cause an upward trend in total emissions even if these mitigating practices become widely adopted.

Field experiments undertaken at 14 sites, on a range of soil types, in lowland England, during the cropping years 1989–1993, tested the effectiveness of cattle or pig slurry as a source of nitrogen for cereal cropping. Slurry was applied in autumn, winter and spring, to autumn and spring sown cereal crops. Assessments included slurry nitrogen efficiency relative to N in spring applied fertilizer in terms of both grain yield and grain protein production, apparent crop recovery and content of mineral nitrogen in soil profiles. Crop response to nitrogen was poor at seven sites where high residues of soil mineral nitrogen (SMN) were present. On the seven responsive sites, spring slurry applications proved more efficient (mean 40%) as a source of N than autumn (mean 24%) or winter applications (mean 32%). These differences were smaller than reported in a number of other studies, probably as a result of relatively low excess winter rainfall, resulting in less nitrate leaching during the period of the investigation. Rapid incorporation into the topsoil of slurry applied in autumn, increased (28 kgN/ha) the SMN of samples taken early in the winter. However this increase did not lead to a consistent improvement in crop N uptake. Slurry dressings, whenever applied, can be expected to make a significant contribution to the N requirement of the succeeding crop and need to be taken into account when calculating the appropriate spring fertilizer application.

    Notes: Abstract. Organic manures are an important source of P which can make a significant economic contribution to farm fertilizer policies. In the region of 119000 tonnes of P are returned annually to UK agricultural land in the form of manures collected and handled on farms, with an estimated 66000 tonnes of P applied to tillage land and 53000 tonnes to grassland.Previous research on the utilization of manure P has tended to indicate a lower efficiency compared to inorganic fertilizer P in the season following application, but in the longer term manure and fertilizer P can be regarded as equivalent. Failure to adequately account for manure P additions to the land may result in soil enrichment which could increase the agricultural contribution to eutrophication, as a result of surface runoff or leaching.Recent research has indicated that the current guidelines for minimizing runoff losses following the land spreading of manures are generally soundly based. However, there is a need for further research where manures are applied to cracking clay soils with underdrainage, and where rainfall soon after slurry application can increase surface runoff.The careful cycling of manures within a properly devised fertilizer plan should minimize the risk of unnecessary soil P enrichment and subsequent leaching losses by restricting topsoil extractable P levels to less than 70 mg I-1.

    Notes: We have induced large elastic strains in ropes of single-wall carbon nanotubes, using an atomic force microscope in lateral force mode. Freely suspended ropes were observed to deform as elastic strings with tension proportional to elongation. Ropes were elastically deformed over 〉10 cycles without showing signs of plastic deformation. The maximum strain observed, 5.8±0.9%, gives a lower bound of 45±7 GPa for the tensile strength (specifically, yield stress) of single-wall nanotube ropes. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Dissociative electron attachment to CCl4 is studied by measuring the angular and velocity distribution of Cl− ions produced in collisions with velocity selected K(np) Rydberg atoms. Analysis of the data using a Monte Carlo collision code that models the detailed kinematics of the reaction indicates that the lifetime of the CCl4−* intermediate initially formed by Rydberg electron capture is 7.5±2.5 ps and that, upon dissociation, only a small fraction of the excess energy of reaction appears as translational energy of the Cl− and CCl3 fragments. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

The product ions are mass analyzed using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer and detected with a position-sensitive detector whose output provides clear evidence that all product ions are completely collected. The overall uncertainty in the absolute cross section values is ±3.5% for singly charged parent ions and is slightly greater for fragment and doubly charged ions. For the fragment ion cross sections, all but one of the previous measurements are observed to be significantly lower than the present results. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

The product ions are mass analyzed using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer and detected with a position-sensitive detector whose output demonstrates that all product ions are completely collected. The overall uncertainty in the absolute cross section values is ±4.5% for singly charged parent ions and is slightly greater for fragment ions. The cross sections for H2O and D2O are found to be the same to within experimental uncertainties except for the H2+ cross section which is approximately a factor of 2 greater than the D2+ cross section. Previous results are compared to the present measurements. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
