    Notes: We report a novel method for fullerene formation during diamond synthesis via a hot filament, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) procedure. The fullerenes occur in the soot that forms as a by-product on the edges and rear surface of the substrate holder, where the temperature does not favor diamond deposition. Mass spectrometry of the soot shows a peak having a mass to charge ratio corresponding to C60. From typical concentrations of gaseous species in the diamond-growing CVD chamber, we conclude that hydrocarbon species such as CH3 or C2H2 may be the precursors for the fullerene in the CVD chamber. The atomic hydrogen in the gaseous species is believed to play an important role in removing the hydrogen from hydrocarbon to form the all-carbon fullerene. Our observations also suggest that fullerenes produced in the CVD diamond growth chamber play a role in diamond nucleation on foreign substrates. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Furfural hydrogenation over copper dispersed on three forms of carbon – activated carbon, diamond and graphitized fibers – were studied. Only hydrogenation of the C=O bond to form either furfuryl alcohol or 2‐methyl furan occurred at temperatures from 473 to 573 K. Reduction at 573 K gave the most active catalysts, all three catalysts had activation energies of 16 kcal/mol, and turnover frequencies were 0.018–0.032 s-1 based on the number of Cu0 + Cu+ sites, which were counted by N2O adsorption at 363 K and CO adsorption at 300 K, respectively. The Cu/activated carbon catalyst showed no deactivation during 10 h on stream, in contrast to the other two catalysts. A simple Langmuir–Hinshelwood model invoking two types of sites was able to fit all kinetic data quite satisfactorily, thus it was consistent with the presence of both Cu0 and Cu+ sites.

    Notes: Abstract Objective.We have previously described an indicator dilutiontechnique of measuring cardiac output in which lithium chloride is injectedas a bolus via a central venous catheter and cardiac output derived from thearterial lithium dilution curve recorded from a lithium-selective electrode,which we have developed for this purpose. It would be an advantage if thelithium could be injected via the basilic vein (in the antecubital fossa) inthose patients who do not need central venous catheterisation for otherreasons. We have therefore compared cardiac output measurements made usingthese two routes of lithium chloride administration. Methods.Lithiumdilution cardiac output was measured 10 times in each of 10 patients,injecting the lithium chloride alternately via the basilic or central venouscatheter. Results.The mean difference was 0.8 ± 5.2% (SD)(range −8.5 to +7.0%) over a range of cardiac output of 4.5–13l/min. Conclusions.Injection of lithium chloride via the basilic veinin the antecubital fossa allows accurate lithium dilution cardiac outputmeasurements to be made in patients who do not have central venous cathetersin place.

    Notes: A method for the determination of anionic solutes such as phenol, cresols, and xylenols present in industrial effluents has been developed. It is based on microextraction using two miscible phases followed by demixing of the phases by the addition of ammonium sulfate. The extraction properties of 2-propanol were examined and the procedures were optimized. High resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the selected ion monitoring mode was used as a separation and quantitation technique. This method is rapid and precise and allows detection limits of 1 μg L-1 to be easily obtainable employing a 50 mL water sample.
