Notes: High-temperature in situ x-ray measurements have been undertaken during the growth of Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ in order to determine the sequence of phases that form and the kinetics of growth. With a Ag-coated thin pellet of the starting mixture of Pb-doped Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+δ, Ca-cuprates, and CuO in an air atmosphere, major changes occur in the x-ray spectrum at temperatures as low as 790 °C. A triplet of lines associated with Ca2PbO4 forms as soon as the pellet reaches 790 °C and then disappears after 20 or 30 minutes. The Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ phase begins to grow at about 810 °C. For these rather porous pellets, about 20% of the sample transforms to Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ, as indicated by both x-ray intensities and superconducting magnetization studies. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Cholesteric liquid crystal displays employ cells consisting of parallel glass plates which have indium-tin-oxide coating as the electrode and polyimide as the alignment layer. We have performed a systematic study of the reflections from the interfaces and the liquid crystal. We measured the reflection spectra using various incident light, various polarizations, and detection polarizations. Using the Berreman 4×4 method, we simulated the reflection spectra without fitting parameters; the results agreed well with the experimental results. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In situ high-temperature x-ray measurements have been used to follow the crystallographic changes that occur as Pb-doped Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+δ plus other phases transform to Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ in a powder-in-tube process for forming tape conductors. On the initial ramp to the reaction temperature, the Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+δ x-ray lines first diminish in amplitude, by about a factor of 2 or more, and then begin to grow again above 700 °C. In the 790–795 °C range, a transient new phase is seen. Finally, at temperatures as low as 790 °C, the Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ phase begins to grow as the Pb-doped Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+δ disappears. Separate studies of a Pb-doped Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+δ pellet without the Ca2Cu1O3 and CuO present show essentially the same peak intensity changes during the temperature ramp to 700 °C. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We developed a dual frequency cholesteric light shutter which utilizes a cholesteric liquid crystal; the dielectric anisotropy of the material changes from positive to negative when the frequency of applied voltage is increased. The shutters are switched to the transparent homeotropic texture by low frequency voltages, and switched to the reflecting planar texture by high frequency voltages. We designed a waveform which reduced the transition time from the homeotropic texture to the planar texture to less than 100 ms. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In the growth of Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ from mixed powders of Pb-doped Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+δ and other oxides, it has been discovered that a dense array of hillocks or mesas grow at the interface between a Ag overlay and Pb-doped Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+δ grains during the ramp up to the reaction temperature. As viewed in an environmental scanning electron microscope, the Ag coated grains develop a texture that looks like "chicken pox'' growing on the grains at about 700 °C. These hillocks are about 100 nm across and are spaced at about 500 to 1000 nm. If there is no Ag, this texture does not develop. Preliminary measurements indicate that the hillocks are a recrystallization of (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+δ, and are definitely not a Pb rich phase. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The brain dopamine system is thought to be the major target for the neuropharmacological actions of psychomotor stimulants such as cocaine. To investigate the mechanisms of cocaine action, we used a genetic approach, the gene-targeting technique, and generated D1 dopamine receptor mutant mice. Locomotor activity analysis in response to cocaine indicates that, in contrast to control mice which showed a dose-dependent increase in locomotion, D1 receptor mutant mice exhibited a dose-dependent decrease, suggesting that D1 receptors play an essential role in mediating such effects. Extracellular single unit recording of dopamine sensitive nucleus accumbens neurons in the D1 receptor mutant mice and control mice revealed a marked reduction in the inhibitory effects of cocaine and dopamine on the generation of action potentials, suggesting that D1 receptors play a fundamental role in cocaine- and dopamine-mediated neurophysiological effects within the nucleus accumbens. From these analyses, we conclude that the D1 dopamine receptor plays essential roles in mediating these effects of cocaine. In the future, the use of this powerful genetic approach will be essential for elucidating the molecular components of the signal transduction pathway leading to anatomical,

Notes: Abstract The purpose of this paper is to present some results instit theory, a theory of agency proposed by N. Belnap and M. Perloff. We will establish a correspondence between the numbers ofstit modalities and the complexity degrees ofbusy choice sequences in semantic structures, and consequently, a correspondence between the number of modes of actions/inactions instit theory and the complexity degrees ofbusy choice sequences in semantic structures.

Notes: Abstract A graph X is k-arc-transitive if its automorphism group acts transitively on the set of k-arcs of X. A circulant is a Cayley graph of a cyclic group. A classification of 2-arc-transitive circulants is given.

Notes: Abstract Based on a notion of “companions to stit formulas” applied in other papers dealing with astit logics, we introduce “choice formulas” and “nested choice formulas” to prove the completeness theorems for dstit logics in a language with the dstit operator as the only non-truth-functional operator. The main logic discussed in this paper is the basic logic of dstit with multiple agents, other logics discussed include the basic logic of dstit with a single agent and some logics of dstit with multiple agents each of which corresponds to a semantic condition concerning the number of possible choices for agents.
