Notes: The sources of indefiniteness in the orientation-distribution-function (ODF) description of crystalline texture are shown to result from the integral nature of the pole-figure measurement. An equipartition-area theorem is proved and it is shown that current methods use too few pole figures, which are measured to an unnecessarily high angular resolution. The experimental resolution is considered and the number of pole figures needed for ODF analysis is calculated as a function of the required ODF resolution.

Notes: A new simple method is proposed for determining the orientation distribution function (ODF) for three-dimensional texture analysis in a polycrystal based on the reality that the accuracy of an ODF is dependent on both the accuracy of each measured pole figure and the number of pole figures.

Notes: In this paper, an interpolation method called the quasi-higher order element method (QHOEM) is proposed for solving elastoplastic problems using symmetric Galerkin boundary element method (SGBEM). At the initial stage, it uses higher order elements to interpolate the coordinates and the field variables. Then, for the numerical integration involved, it further uses interpolation to decompose the higher order elements into lower order elements so that the existing analytical integration formulas can be applied. By adopting this procedure, the proposed method yields good adaptability and reduces the computational cost. Its accuracy and efficiency are demonstrated by analyzing three practical examples.

Notes: Abstract The microstructures, mechanical properties and electrical resistivity have been evaluated for deformation processed Al-20 vol % Mg and Al-13 vol % Mg composites. The Mg second phase adopts a convoluted, ribbon shape filamentary morphology after deformation. Both the size and spacing of these filaments decreases with deformation. The strength of these composites increases exponentially with reduced spacing of Mg filaments. The electrical resistivity of these Al-Mg composites is slightly higher than that of pure Al.

Notes: Abstract. Numerical schemes based on the collisional BGK model have been developed in recent years. In this paper, we investigate the first-order BGK schemes for the Euler equations. Particular attention is given to finding CFL-like conditions under which the schemes are positivity-preserving (i.e. density and internal energy remain nonnegative). The first-order BGK schemes are linear combinations of collisionless (i.e. kinetic flux-splitting scheme) and collisional approach. We show that the collisionless approach preserves the positivity of density and internal energy under the standard CFL condition. Although the collisionless approach has the positivity-preserving property, it introduces large intrinsic dissipation and heat conductions since the corresponding scheme is based on two half Maxwellians. In order to reduce the viscous error, one obvious method is to use an exact Maxwellian, which leads to the collisional Boltzmann scheme. An CFL-like condition is also found for the collisional approach, which works well for the test problems available in literature. However, by considering a counterexample we find that the collisional approach is not always positivity-preserving. The BGK type schemes are formed by taking the advantages of both approaches, i.e. the less dissipative scheme (collisional) and the more dissipative but positivity-preserving scheme (collisionless).

Notes: Summary. We examined the effect of L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) infusion in vitro upon dopamine (DA) and dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) output from superfused corpus striatum of vehicle and reserpine or tetrabenazine (TBZ) treated male rats. Specifically, we tested the effects of two 20-min infusions of L-DOPA (5 uM) upon DA and DOPAC output (pg/mg/min) in reserpine (5 mg/kg, i.p., 24 hours before sacrifice; n = 11), TBZ (30 mg/kg, i.p. 1 hour before sacrifice; n = 8) or vehicle (n = 21) treated rats. There was an overall significantly higher L-DOPA evoked DA output from the vehicle (12.22 ± 1.74) versus reserpine (4.39 ± 2.40) (p 〈 0.05), but not TBZ (9.16 ± 2.81) treated rats. In addition, the DA response to the second L-DOPA infusion was significantly increased over that of the first response in the vehicle (9.40 ± 2.11 vs. 15.04 ± 2.78) (p 〈 0.05), but not reserpine or TBZ treated rats. The overall DOPAC outputs did not achieve a statistically significant difference among all treatment groups. However, the DOPAC outputs following the second L-DOPA infusion were significantly reduced in reserpine (41.15 ± 6.10 vs. 20.27 ± 4.54) and TBZ (21.38 ± 4.41 vs. 10.87 ± 2.36) (both p 〈 0.05), but not vehicle (28.99 ± 4.00 vs. 24.91 ± 4.78) treated rats. We conclude that: 1) the storage capacity of DA neurons is one of the important elements involved in affecting L-DOPA's effects upon DA and DOPAC output, 2) the shunting of storage to metabolism may represent a common characteristic in impaired nigrostriatal dopaminergic system, and 3) TBZ may operate differently from reserpine in the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system.

Notes: Summary In the present report we examined the differences in in vitro dopamine (DA) and dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) efflux from the corpus striatum (CS) of intact versus 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesioned (in substantia nigra) male rats in response to different doses of two pulse infusions of L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA). In the first experiment, we tested the effects of two 20-min infusions of 5 uM L-DOPA. In the second experiment we repeated this protocol using 50 uM L-DOPA. There was an overall significantly greater output of DA for intact versus 6-OHDA lesioned rats for both doses. Moreover, in Experiment 1, the 5 uM L-DOPA produced a peak DA response to the second infusion which was significantly higher than that of the first infusion in the intact, but not lesioned rats. In Experiment 2, the 50 uM L-DOPA group showed no significant differences in DA output between the two infusions for both intact and lesioned rats. In contrast to DA responses, there were no overall significant differences in DOPAC output between intact and 6-OHDA lesioned rats for both doses. However, for both doses tested, the peak DOPAC output from the second infusion was significantly increased in lesioned, but not intact rats. These data demonstrate that L-DOPA evoked DA and DOPAC output are differentially modulated in intact and 6-OHDA lesioned striatum. The lesions of the striatal dopaminergic system may alter these responses through changes in intraneuronal storage and metabolism of DA following L-DOPA infusion.

Notes: Abstract Purpose The present study was performed to culture human fetal ova to determine whether they can be matured and cryopreserved using ultrarapid freezing Methods Thirty-three pairs of fetal ovaries were obtained from fetuses of 16–20 weeks' gestation following elective abortion. Ovarian tissues were minced into approximately 1-mm sizes and cultured in Waymouth media either before or after ultrarapid freezing. The Waymouth medium was supplemented with 15% (v/v) fetal bovine serum, 0.03 IU/ml FSH and 35 ng/ml insulin. The tissue was cultured at 37
