    Notes: Summary To examine whether the 3∼4-cm-long allogeneic basal lamina tubes of Schwann cells serve as conduits for regenerating axons in rabbits, allogeneic saphenous nerve, which had been predenervated and pretreated by freezing, were transplanted from Japanese White rabbits (JW) to New Zealand White rabbits (NW). Animals were killed 1, 2, 6, 8, and 14 weeks after transplantation, and the cytology at the mid-portion of the grafts was examined by electron microscopy. The distal portion of the host saphenous nerves was also examined 14 weeks after grafting. Myelin sheath debris was phagocytosed by macrophages, while the basal lamina of Schwann cells were left intact in the form of tubes. Regenerating axons were first found in such basal lamina tubes 2 weeks after grafting, and gradually increased in number. Host Schwann cells accompanied the regenerating axons behind their growing tips, separating them into individual fibers and forming thin myelin sheaths on thick axons by 6 weeks after grafting. Regenerating nerves were divided into small compartments by new perineurial cells. Newly formed blood vessels were situated outside the compartment 8 weeks after grafting. The percentage of myelinated fibers in the regenerating nerves was roughly 10% at 8 weeks and 30% at 14 weeks after grafting. The diameter of the regenerating axons, both myelinated and unmyelinated, was less than that of normal axons at all the stages examined. Numerous regenerating axons, some of which were fully myelinated, were found at the site 10 mm distal to the distal end of the graft 14 weeks after grafting. These results indicate that the Schwann cell basal lamina tubes of cryoinjured allogeneic nerves can serve as conduits for regenerating nerves in the 3∼4-cm-long graft in the rabbit.

    Notes: Summary We examined the mechanical anisotropy of the basement spring which underlies the directional sensitivity of the cercal filiform hair of the cricket (Gryllus bimaculatus). Spring stiffness varied with the direction of hair deflection. The anisotropic ratios were 8 for short hairs and 4 for long ones, whereas the absolute values of spring stiffness varied 100-fold with hair length.

    Notes: Summary The amino-carbonyl reaction (The Maillard reaction) of bovine lens crystallin, serum albumin or skin collagen with glucose was investigated to find effective means to prevent the formation of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGE) and induce the reversible solubilization of polymerized glycated proteins. The organic germanium compounds (Ge-132, 373, 385), derivatives of amino acids containing germanium as the linker of framework, were combined by the box titration method to determine the dose that would be most effective, compared with Aminoguanidine-HCl (AMG),α-tocopherol (VE), and pirenoxine (Catalin-K, CK). Although AMG suppressed the formation of AGE, effective concentrations were higher than 20 mM. Ge-385, when administered by itself at a low dose, induced the reversible solubilization of AGE made from crystallin, and albumin. The addition of any two reagents such as AMG, VE, CK and Ge-132 or 385 together to proteins lessened the effective range, and the peaks of smaller molecules in the profiles of HPLC and PAGE were quite remarkable. Examination was made of the effects of Ge-132 on the eyes of SAM mice, which show senescence accelerated cataracts at a relatively young age. The prevention of cataract-genesis and induction of reversible transparency of turbid lenses became evident following the administration of Ge-132 to the eyes 4 times a day. The mode of action of organic germanium compounds was demonstrated quite capable of disconnecting the sugar-parts from AGE by decarbonylation, resulting in the formation of glucosone and amino residues, and further leading subsequently to fewer AGE.
