    Notes: A single-photon counting instrument is described that is capable of recording single decay curves, time-resolved spectra, and sequences of fluorescence decay curves with the emission wavelength, the time from the start of the experiment, or other externally variable values as parameters. The instrument contains an internal microcomputer for experiment and measurement system control, data processing, and data management. It can be operated at pulse repetition rates ranging from 10 to 200 MHz and allows a photon count rate of up to 106/s. The FWHM of the instrument response is 94 ps with a photomultiplier tube of type 18 ELU-FM.

    Notes: Measurements of photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation spectra at liquid helium temperatures are presented for films of ZnSe, Zn1−xMnxSe (0≤x≤0.33), and multilayer structures ZnSe/Zn1−xMnxSe (x=0.23, 0.33, and 0.51) grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. All samples investigated had the zinc-blende structure. The temperature dependence of the luminescence from the superlattices has been studied up to 300 K. Good quality of the samples is evidenced by the reduction of impurity- or defect-related long wavelength emissions. Several new features in the photoluminescence spectra were resolved (e.g., a region of low-intensity luminescence ending with a sharp cut off at about 75 meV above the main line) which were not observable in bulk samples. The presence of internal strains in the epitaxially grown superlattice samples results in the observed splitting of the heavy- and light-hole valence bands. Furthermore, the strain present can actually dominate over the quantum confinement to produce a net red shift of the near band-edge features. Both the red shifts and the heavy-to-light-hole band splitting are consistent with the estimates of the lattice mismatch-induced strains.

    Notes: Spontaneous emission in a tapered free-electron laser is considered for the case where the magnetic field of the undulator is described by an expression that varies discretely from one half-period to the next. This geometry permits the utilization of the knowledge of the electron trajectories in untapered undulators. The method can be applied for any conceivable configuration of tapered undulators with electrons propagating either on or off axis and yields the spectrum of radiation at arbitrary angles including harmonics. The approach is developed for linear polarization; however, circular polarization may be treated as well.

    Notes: A new carrier gas-free metalorganic chemical vapor deposition technique was developed yielding a high deposition rate. The β-dicetonate precursor compounds were synthesized with reproducible water content which is of great importance for their vapor pressure. With the technique described above c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films were prepared with Tc(R=0)=91.8 K and jc(77 K)=1.3×106 A/cm2 on (100)SrTiO3 substrates and Tc(R=0)=91.1 K and jc(77 K)=3×105 A/cm2 on (100)MgO substrates at B=0 T. The influence of the metal composition on the formation of precipitation was studied by SEM investigations.

    Notes: Polyclonal human IgE antibodies of patients sensitized to one species of the Diptera family Chironomidae as well as polyclonal rabbit anti-Chi t I hyperimmune serum recognize antigenic sites present in nearly all of the 33 species of this insect family. Evolutionary distantly related genera usually show weaker antibody binding. According to the pattern of reactivity of rabbit anti-Chi t I-component III, expression of the epitopes of this molecule varies considerably in the genera Chironomus and Glyptotendipes; it appears to be almost totally absent in all other species. Of five monoclonal antibodies raised against Chi t I-component III, two recognize an epitope which is expressed in nearly all closely related species. Three monoclonal antibodies recognize epitopes which are expressed in only a few species of the same genus. Our results demonstrate the presence of common as well as species-specific epitopes in chironomid hemoglobins which behave as potent inhalant allergens.

    Notes: The stochastic average of exponential expressions that depend at most quadratically upon a Gaussian random function is evaluated using a functional method. The average can be obtained formally for arbitrary forms of the correlation function. The result, however, depends upon a functional determinant and the inverse of a linear operator. Cases are discussed, in particular the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process, where the latter quantities can be evaluated explicitly.

    Notes: The major allergen of timothy grass pollen (Phleum pratense), designated as Phl p V, consists of isoallergenic components of 38 and 32 kDa with pi values of 5.2 7.5 and 4.8 5 9, respectively. The different-sized proteins reveal similarities in IgE reactivity, N-terminal sequence and protein staining. For epitope analysis of these allergens u combination of enzymatic cleavage of electrophoretically separated proteins and iminunoblotting techniques with subsequent N-terminal sequencing was performed. After isolation of the components from two-dimensional PAGE gels. proteins were enzymatically cleaved and separated by SDS-PAGE. By endoproteinase Glu-C cleavage six IgE-reactive fragments of each 32 kDa protein and three of each 38 kDa allergen were obtained. Microsequencing of the fragments revealed internal sequences that did not show any similarities between the different-sized allergens. Therefore, we assume only slight structural variations among allergens of similar sizes, whereas the 32 and 38 kDa proteins reveal great differences.
