Notes: We describe a novel technique using an atomic force microscope (AFM) for integrated nanometer-scale lithography on various mask materials such as photoresist or gold covering a mesa-etched GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructure at ambient conditions. The generated patterns can be transferred to the two-dimensional electron gas by wet chemical etching or by ion beam irradiation. We succeed in fabricating hole arrays with a periodicity down to 35 nm and a hole diameter of only a few nanometers. In magnetoresistance studies on so-called antidot devices with 95 nm period at T=4.2 K we can clearly observe commensurability oscillations, demonstrating the successful pattern transfer to the electron system. With the AFM we can also pattern lines of varying width and depth into prefabricated devices. © 1994 American Institue of Physics.

Notes: The fetus heals skin wounds without scar formation. Human fetal skin that is transplanted to a subcutaneous location on an adult athymic mouse and subsequently wounded heals without scar formation, whereas the same skin heals with scar formation when transplanted to a cutaneous location. In situ hybridization with species-specific DNA probes and immunohistochemistry were performed to characterize the healing process of human fetal skin in these two locations. Species-specific human and mouse DNA probes were constructed and used to probe graft wounds under high stringency in situ hybridization conditions. Immunostaining for species-specific fibroblasts, macrophages, and neutrophils was also performed. We found that the cutaneous human fetal grafts healed with scar and showed an influx of mouse fibroblasts and macrophages. In contrast, subcutaneous human fetal grafts showed exclusively human fetal fibroblasts in the wound environment, an absence of inflammatory cells, and scar-free repair. We conclude that the highly organized collagen deposition in scarless human fetal wound repair appears to be intrinsic to the human fetal fibroblasts and occurs in the absence of an adult-like inflammatory response.

Notes: Summary The chances of survival for patients with interruption of the aortic arch depend mainly on early recognition and medical treatment before symptoms of cardiogenic shock appear, and specifically on early operative repair after the exact diagnosis has been established. Accurate angiography with visualization of the interrupted aortic arch and delineation of associated cardiac malformations is of prime importance for the surgical management and prognosis. Among our 36 patients with interrupted aortic arch, 27 were operated on. The operative mortality in 22 patients with associated ventricular septal defect (VSD) and persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA) was reduced from 43% (in seven patients seen up until 1979) to 7% (in 15 patients seen since 1980). One patient with interrupted aortic arch type C and another infant with associated truncus arteriosus were successfully corrected on day 9 and day 17 of life, respectively. In the patients with associated VSD and PDA as well as in the one patient with associated truncus arteriosus, the primary correction—direct anastomosis of the interrupted segments without prosthesis and VSD closure and in the case with truncus, the additional positioning of a valve-bearing allograft conduit from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery—has been more successful than a two-step approach with initial pulmonary artery banding.

Notes: Summary Treatment of the myeloid blast phase of chronic granulocytic leukemia is still a major problem in clinical hematology. Alternate-day plicamycin and hydroxyurea treatment was reported to induce remissions in the majority of patients with myeloid blast phase by Koller and Miller in 1986 [5]. Subsequently we treated eight patients according to this regimen. Complete remissions could not be achieved and no prolongation of median survival was observed. In two patients treatment had to be discontinued due to severe toxicity.

Notes: Abstract We retrospectively reviewed six patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SCCA) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection treated between 1985 and 1988. All six patients were homosexual men. Five patients had AIDS and one was HIV-positive. The most common symptoms and signs were pain (n=5), mass (n =5), and bleeding (n=5). The average tumor size was 3.2 cm with a range of 1–10 cm. Five tumors were located in the anal canal and one at the anodermal junction. One patient was treated with biopsy alone, one with local excision, one with wide local excision and radiation therapy, and two with diverting colostomy. The average follow-up was 8 months. Of the five AIDS patients, two died, one was transferred to a hospice facility, one was lost to follow-up, and one remains alive 1 year following treatment. The HIV-positive patient died secondary to metastatic SCCA. This group of patients raises the question of a possible association between HIV and SCCA.
