    Notes: Abstract A study of the two-jet mass spectrum measured with the UA 2 calorimeter has revealed a signal from hadronic decays ofW andZ bosons above a large background. Production and decay properties of the signal have been measured. The combined production cross-section σ·B(W, Z → two jets) is 9.6±2.3 (stat.)±1.1 (syst.) nb, compared with an expectation of 5.8 nb calculated to order α s 2 . A limit on the production cross-section of additional heavy vector bosons decaying into two jets is given as a function of the boson mass.

    Notes: Abstract Cross-sections for diffractive particle production and pseudorapidity distributions of the decay products of diffractive states are presented. The data were obtained with the UA 5 streamer chamber detector at the CERNpp Collider operated in a new pulsed mode yieldingpp interactions at c.m. energies of 900 and 200 GeV. Data recorded with a special trigger designed to select a sample of events enriched in single-diffractive interactions clearly favour ap t -limited fragmentation of diffractive states. The cross-section for single-diffractive particle production ϊ was found to be 7.8±0.5±1.1 mb at 900 GeV and 4.8±0.5±0.8 mb at 200 GeV (first error statistical, second systematic). From the pseudorapidity distribution of diffractive states we deduce the average number of charged particles to be 6.5±1.0 at 900 GeV and 4.1±1.1 at 200 GeV. Furthermore we report on our estimates for the cross-section of double-diffractive particle production at both Collider energies.

    Notes: Abstract The transverse momentum distributions ofW andZ bosons produced in $$\bar pp$$ collisions at $$\sqrt s = 630 GeV$$ are examined. Comparisons are made with QCD predictions, and good agreement is found. The fraction ofW bosons produced withp T 〉25 GeV is found to be 3.8±0.6(stat) −1.3 +0.9 (syst)%.

    Notes: Abstract Multiplicity distributions of charged particles produced in non single-diffractive collisions between protons and antiprotons at centre of mass energies of 200 and 900 GeV are presented. The data were recorded in the UA5 streamer chambers at the CERN Collider, which was operated in a pulsed mode between the two energies. A new method to correct for acceptance limitations and inefficiencies based on the principle of maximum entropy has been used. Multiplicity distributions in full phase space and in intervals of pseudorapidity are presented in tabular form. The violation of KNO scaling in full phase space found by the UA5 group at an energy of 546 GeV is confirmed also at 200 and 900 GeV. The shape of the 900 GeV distribution in full phase space is narrower in the peak region than at 200 GeV but exhibits a pronounced high multiplicity tail. The negative binomial distribution fits data at 200 GeV in all pseudorapidity intervals and in small intervals at 900 GeV. In large intervals at 900 GeV, however, the negative binomial distribution. Fits to the partially coherent laser distribution are also presented as well as comparisons with predictions of the Dual Parton, the Fritiof and the Pythia models.

    Notes: Abstract We present data on photon production in non single-diffractivep $$\bar p$$ -collisions at c.m. energies of 200 and 900 GeV. Besides the general properties of photon production, i.e. pseudorapidity distribution and average multiplicity, we also investigate photon-charged two-particle pseudorapidity and multiplicity correlations. We find for the average number of photons in non single-diffractivep $$\bar p$$ -collisions 22.2±1.4±2.0 at 200 GeV and 41.4±2.1±3.5 at 900 GeV, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The analysis of photon-charged particle multiplicity correlations reveals strong positive correlations between the average number of photons and the number of simultaneously produced charged particles, as expected from FNAL and ISR studies and from our result at 546 GeV. We obtain for the correlation slope 0.95±0.08±0.11 at 200 GeV and 1.09±0.09±0.13 at 900 GeV (first error is statistical and the second systematic). The investigation of photon-charged two-particle pseudorapidity correlations shows that these correlations are of short range and compatible with the observed charged two-particle pseudorapidity correlations. These correlations and the results for the average number of photons as a function of the produced number of charged particles favour the conclusion that photon sources other than π0 s contribute significantly to the observed photon yield in non single-diffractivep $$\bar p$$ -collisions. For example, if all photons are assumed to come from π0 s and η mesons, a η/π0 ratio of about 20% is inferred.

    Notes: Abstract Data on antiproton-proton cross sections at the c.m. energies 200 and 900 GeV are presented. The data were obtained at the CERN antiproton-proton Collider operated in a new pulsed mode in which the same beams were accelerated and decelerated between beam energies of 450 and 100 GeV. The properties of the machine determine the ratio of the luminosities at the two energies to about 1% and thus an accurate measurement of the ratioR of the inelastic cross sections could be made. We findR (=σ 900/σ 200)=1.20±0.01±0.02, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. Interpolating existing data to estimateσ ine1(200 GeV) this measurement ofR leads toσ ine1(900 GeV)=50.3+0.4+1.0 mb. Using an extrapolated value ofσ e1/σ tot we estimate the total cross section at 900 GeV to be 65.3±0.7±1.5 mb. Both the inelastic and total cross sections are compatible with a ln2 s dependence. Comparisons are made with different fits to the total cross section energy dependence.

    Notes: Abstract New data are presented on charged particle pseudorapidity distributions for inelastic events produced at c.m. energies $$\sqrt s $$ =200 and 900 GeV. The data were obtained at the CERN antiproton-proton Collider operated in a new pulsed mode. The rise of the central density ρ(0) at energies up to $$\sqrt s $$ =900 GeV has been studied. A new form of central region scaling is found involving the densityρ n (0) for charged multiplicityn, namely that the scaled central densityρ n (0)/ρ(0) expressed as a function ofz=n/〈n〉 is independent ofs. Scaling in the fragmentation region holds to 10–20%, and the small amount of scalebreaking observed here could be accommodated within the framework suggested by Wdowcyk and Wolfendale to account for both accelerator and cosmic ray data.

    Notes: Photon imaging is an increasingly important technique for the measurement and analysis of chemiluminescence and bioluminescence. New high-performance low-light level imaging systems have recently become available for the life science. These systems use advances in camera design and digital image processing and are now being used for a wide range of luminescence applications. They offer good sensitivity for photon detection and large dynamic range, and are suitable for quantitative analysis. This is achieved using a range of software techniques including image arithmetic, histogramming or summing regions of interest, feature extraction and multiple image processing for kinetics or assay screening. Improvements in imageprocessing hardware and software have increased the usefulness of these systems in the biosciences.Low-light imaging is a rapid and non-invasive method for the sensitive detection and analysis of luminescent assays. As such it offers a powerful and sensitive tool for investigating processes, both at the cellular level (luc and lux reporter genes, intracellular signalling) and for measurement of macro samples (immunoassays, gels and blots, tissue sections).

    Notes: Quantitative and sensitive imaging of chemiluminescence, bioluminescence and fluorescence emissions is emerging as an increasingly important technique for a range of biomedical applications (Hooper et al., 1990). A brief review of low-light-level imaging is presented, with particular reference to charge-coupled devices (CCD). Detectors for sensitive imaging are described and compared, including various CCDs and photoncounting devices. Image analysis techniques based on digital image processing, may be applied to quantify luminescent processes with these detectors. Images of luciferase gene expression in single mammalian cells have been obtained using a particular highsensitivity intensified CCD camera. The method is illustrated using cell monolayers infected with recombinant vaccinia virus encoding the firefly luciferase, luc gene (Rodriguez et al., 1988). The CCD camera has been used to detect luciferase expression in single, recombinant infected cells amongst over one million non-infected cells. The rapid detection of luciferase-expressing viruses may be used for the selection of virus deletion mutants into which the luciferase gene has been cloned at specific sites. This is particularly useful in the case of viruses such as cytomegalovirus which have slow replication cycles.This direct imaging technique is simple and versatile. It offers a rapid, non-invasive method for the sensitive detection of luciferase activity in single, luciferase-expressing cells. One can envisage the use of luciferase as a sensitive and convenient co-selection marker gene in the analysis of both gene expression and protein function. These methods offer tremendous potential in the fields of molecular and cellular biology.
