Notes: This study examined the relationship between death anxiety, the anxiety surrounding dealing practically with dying, and the level of experience of care assistants in residential settings for the elderly It also examined the perception of the officer in charge of the establishment of the care assistants’ level of anxiety Age was the best predictor of both death anxiety and practical anxiety, the two being correlated There was also a difference in perception of staff anxiety as a consequence of ethnic-group membership The implications of this for training and practice are discussed

Notes: This study examined the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and degree of contact with AIDS and HIV for three groups of people nurses, psychology students and design students using a standardized questionnaire The questionnaire differentiated between the groups on all three dimensions with nurses having most knowledge but least positive attitudes There was no relationship between knowledge and attitudes for the three groups although contact and knowledge were related for the design students and attitudes and contact were related for the psychology students For all groups the strongest relationship was between attitudes and contact The implications of the results for training courses are discussed

Notes: Abstract The RNA and DNA contents of the male and female portions of the gonad of the hermaphroditic marine bivalve molluscPecten maximus L. have been monitored throughout an annual reproductive cycle, from October 1985–September 1986, for a population from the Baie de Seine (Normandy, France). The DNA content of the male gonad was consistently 5 to 10 times greater than that of the female gonad, whilst the RNA content was lower. This underlines the basic premise that spermatogenesis involves the production of large numbers of small gametes, whereas oogenesis involves the production of few, large, synthetically active gametes. The RNA:DNA ratio is a good indicator of sexual maturation in the male gonad. Two peaks of RNA:DNA ratio were observed for the female gonad, possibly corresponding to gonad restoration and vitellogenesis.

Notes: Abstract A method has been developed to isolate glycogen cells (=vesicular connective tissue cells) from the labial palps of the marine mussel Mytilus edulis L. These cells have a modal density of 1.14 g ml-1 and this property has been exploited to separate them from pronase-dissociated cell dispersions by density-gradient centrifugation. The isolated cells were mainly spherical, with a small peripheral nucleus. The quasitotality of the cell was filled with β-like glycogen particles with cellular organelles being limited to the cell periphery. The major recipients of [U-14C] glucose-derived carbon were glycogen and amino acids. Only small quantities of 14C radiolabel were recovered from lipids, protein and CO2. Glucose incorporation into glycogen increased linearly over 6 h and showed saturation kinetics with respect to exogenous glucose concentration.
