Notes: Summary Experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of two triazoles, triadimefon and uniconazole, compared to benzylaminopurine (BAP) for in vitro microtuber production in three leading Indian cultivars, Kufri Jyoti, Kufri Badshah and Kufri Sindhuri. Both triazoles were effective in microtuber production, and at the lowest concentration tested (0.01 mg 1−1) uniconazole was more effective in producing higher numbers and average weight of microtubers than 10 mg 1−1 of BAP, although the best results were obtained with 0.5 mg 1−1 of uniconazole. This is the first report of triazole-induced stimulation of in vitro microtuber production.

Notes: Summary Seeds of an open pollinated crop of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) TPS-2, cv. Kufri Jyoti, were graded into four sizes. There were significant differences between grades for 100-seed weight, the concentrations of total proteins and ethanol soluble proteins, and total lipids and phospholipids. Large seeds contained higher levels (% dry weight) of total proteins, ethanol soluble proteins and alkali soluble proteins than small seeds and they germinated faster and had the highest percentage of germination. Small seeds had the lowest levels of total lipids, phospholipids and water soluble proteins, the longest water saturation time and the lowest germination.

Notes: Summary Three methods of bulk extraction of potato pollen were compared for their efficiency and for the potency of extracted pollen in affecting berry set, seeds/berry and 100 seed weight. Extracting pollen from pre-dried anthers using a sieve of nylon netting with 1 mm perforations was the most economical with respect to time, labour and cost of equipment and that would be applicable for commercial production of hybrid TPS.
