Notes: Summary The chirospecific conversions of D-glucosamine hydrochloride and D-mannosamine hydrochloride to the configurationally stable L and D isomers of N-t-butyloxycarbonylserinal were carried out byt-butylcarbonylation followed by sodium borohydride reduction and sodium meta-periodate oxidation. Reaction of the L and D aldehydes with the Wittig reagent prepared from 4-chlorobenzyltriphenylphosphonium chloride and butyl lithium followed by catalytic hydrogenation, Jones oxidation and salt formation with dicyclohexylamine gave the DCHA salts of the D and L isomers ofp-chlorohomophenylalanine N-t-Boc in high enatiomeric excess. The optical purity of the title compounds was established by hydrolysis to the respective free amino acids, followed by chiral derivatization and HPLC analysis.

Notes: Summary Interspecific F1 hybrids of Nicotiana debneyi Domin (2n=48) and N. umbratica Burbidge (2n=46), both belonging to the section Suaveolentes, showed a high degree of meiotic chromosome pairing. Two of the five F2 plants obtained exhibited chromosome mosaicism. The first colchiploid generation (C1) had the expected chromosome number of 2n=94 while C2 showed 2n=88, a loss of three pairs of chromosomes. This same chromosome number continued in further colchiploid generations, followed up to C5, except for a few plants in C3 which showed chromosome mosaicism. The F1 phenotype was stable through C1 to C5 and fertility was normal in colchiploids through all generations in spite of the loss of three pairs of chromosomes and chromosome mosaicism. This stability and fertility apparently reflect the tolerance of the genomes to the genetic adjustment of chromosome complements which is believed to be associated with the originally polyploid nature of the parental species and the chromosome doubling brought about in the amphidiploids.

Notes: Summary The mammalian centrosome monoclonal antibody MPM-13 recognized component(s) of the well defined MTOC basal-body root complex in the green plantChlamydomonas. The antibody reaction coincided in location with the basal-body root complex and the cruciate nature of the staining pattern corresponded to the configuration of the root microtubules. During mitosis the behaviour of MPM-13 stained material mirrored the duplication, separation and migration to the spindle poles of the basal body-root complex. It is suggested that conserved MTOC components were recognized and that these may have retained a similar, perhaps universal, function in microtubule organization.

Notes: Abstract Populations of Pistia stratiotes L., a pleustonic macrophyte, have been surveyed in two ponds of different hydrochemical nature. Based on the rosette form, two biotypes were distinguished. They are provisionally designated as ‘Compact’ and ‘loose’ varieties. They occur as sympatric populations in the ponds. A comparison of the diameter of the rosette, root length, 5th leaf length & breadth and length & number of inflorescences, followed by tests of significance, confirm their distinctiveness. In vegetative propagation, they propagate true. The comparison of the biotypes is extended to biomass, productivity allocation, pH of the cell saps, chlorophyll, nucleic acids, total free amino acid (TNPS) content of the leaves and total nitrogen, crude protein and phosphorous in whole plants.

Notes: Abstract In the progeny after selfing of a normally open pollinated variety (L.S. 326-3) of pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke, n=7) one plant exhibited desynapsis, chromosome stickiness and high sterility. Meiosis was normal until diplotene. Thereafter, it was characterized by dissociation of bivalents into univalents and formation of nonspecific congregations of chromosomes at diakinesis, shrinkage of cytoplasm and occurrence of unoriented sticky chromatin masses at metaphase I, relaxation of stickiness, unbalanced chromosome numbers at the poles and laggards at anaphase I, and presence of other irregularities in subsequent stages. Meiosis was completed. Male and female sterility was high. This meiotic mutant thus has multiple effects and is inherited as a monogenic recessive and designated as st.

Notes: The phenomenon of premature chromosome condensation (PCC) is induced in unstimulated horse lymphocytes, bovine spermatozoa, Chinese hamster ovary cells, embryonic chick fibroblasts and erythrocytes, Xenopus kidney and mosquito cells by fusing each of these cell types with HeLa cells blocked in mitosis. Thus it becomes possible to visualize chromosomes even from non-multiplying cells of heterologous species, such as, chick erythrocytes and bovine spermatozoa.
