    Notes: We have examined the relationship between month of birth and episodes of wheezing, productive cough, eczema and hayfever, and also standardized maximum midexpiratory flow (FEF25–75) in a representative sample of 4549 Australian primary schoolchildren (mean age 10.1 years). Children experiencing frequent wheezing (one or more episodes per month) were more likely to be born in spring and summer (odds ratio =1.6, 95% confidence interval = 1.1–2.4), but this was not seen for less severe disease. No effect of season or birth month was seen for the other illnesses examined or for lung function.

    Notes: Some researchers have attributed flood tolerance of woody plants to air entering the shoot through stems, leaves, or lenticels and diffusing to the roots to sustain aerobie respiration. The purpose of this study was to determine if internal aeration of roots by lower stems, changes in gross morphology of lower stems, or both, contribute to flood tolerance of certain tree species. Greenhouse-grown seedlings of red maple (Acer rubrum L.) and river birch (Betula nigra L.) tolerated at least 30 days of flooding, where as sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh) and European white birch (also called silver birch, Betula pendula Roth) were intolerant. Flood treatment induced lentieel intumescences and adventitious root formation on red maple stems, but only adventitious roots formed on river birch stems. Stem morphology of sugar maple and European birch was unchanged by flooding. Flood stress decreased oxygen consumption capacity of excised roots from both tolerant and intolerant species. Exclusion of oxygen from the lower stems of flooded red maple and river birch prevented lenticel intumescence and adventitious root formation, but flood tolerance and root respiration capacity were unchanged. Neither internal aeration nor changes in stem morphology appear to account for flood tolerance of red maple and river birch.

    Notes: Abstract Whole body and liver analyses indicated that wintering redheads (Aythya americana; n=70) in coastal Louisiana (one site) and Texas (two sites) were relatively free of contamination with common trace elements, organochlorines, and hydrocarbons. Most trace elements, including As, Cr, Hg, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, Sr, and Zn, were within background concentrations in livers; levels of B, Cd, Cu, and Fe were elevated in some specimens. Only one organochlorine, DDE, was detected in redhead carcasses, but its concentration was below reported toxic levels in waterfowl. Body burdens of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons were generally low, but levels of pristane, total hydrocarbons, and the ratios of phytane:n-octadecane and pristane:n-heptadecane were indicative of possible chronic exposure to petroleum. Based on brain cholinesterase assays, redheads were not recently exposed to organophosphorous or carbamate pesticides. Of 30 elements or compounds tested for seasonal differences, only Se increased from early to late winter at one of the three sites. Eight of 57 contaminants differed among the three sites; no sex or age differences were found.

    Notes: Abstract A model mammalian cell system for the production of recombinant proteins was investigated. Murine myeloma cells which had lost the ability to produce both heavy and light chain immunoglobulin molecules were transfected with a vector containing the immunoglobulin heavy chain promoter and enhancer elements linked to the human growth hormone gene. The growth kinetics of G32, a clonal isolate, were found to be similar to both the parent myeloma and hybridomas. However, production of hGH by G32 was growth associated, rather than as a secondary metabolite as is the case for hybridomas. In addition, G32 produced hGH at molar levels greater than most hybridomas.
