Notes: We report the results of a system to test the behavior of the wires of multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC) exposed for 10 min to a uniform force field of about 10 G strength and variable in time in the frequency range 0–2000 Hz. This acceleration will be present when the chambers, mounted inside a cosmic ray spectrometer, are launched by the Space Shuttle towards the NASA Space Station "FREEDOM.'' We have reproduced these conditions in the laboratory by an electronic device and we have found that, after repeated cycles of this treatment, the wire performance remained unchanged. This system can also be used to control the tension of the wires of a MWPC during its normal testing procedure.

Notes: Summary A case of primary carcinoma of the esophagus is presented that consisted of poorly differentiated small-cell carcinoma. The patient underwent endoscopic treatment, first with an Nd: YAG laser and, finally, with bougienage and the insertion of a prosthesis in order to relieve dysphagia and improve the nutritional status and quality of life. Even though it is generally uncommon for laser therapy to be chosen as a primary mode of treatment, the results obtained should permit to overcome this lack of confidence in the choice of laser treatment for small-cell carcinoma of the esophagus.

Notes: Abstract Endoscopic insertion of tracheobronchial stents is indicated to achieve patency of the airway in case of malignant or benign obstructing lesions. Until now, the placement of prostheses has required a rigid bronchoscope with specially designed insertion instruments. Self-expanding stents are currently used to treat stenoses of different hollow organs (vessels, urinary tract, gastrointestinal tract, bile duct, respiratory tract). We report the first case of a self-expanding stent implanted in the trachea and right main stem bronchus using flexible videobronchoscope under local anesthesia. The procedure was easy, safe, effective, and well tolerated. No complications occurred.

Notes: The influence of a short-time prefilming treatment with benzimidazole-2-thiol on the corrosion resistance of Cu Zn 22Al 2 has been examined. The efficiency of the prefilming treatment has been evaluated by recording the anodic and the cathodic polarization curves in 0.1 N NaCl.Ellipsometric measurements have been carried out in order to obtain some information on the properties of the layer.Comparative data on “prefilmed” and “bare” Cu Zn 22Al2 specimens have been obtained in aqueous chloride solutions circulating in a corrosion loop and by tests in moist atmosphere containing SO2.Galvanic corrosion testing have been carried out by using small not prefilmed areas and large prefilmed ones, simulating in this way the partial removal of the film from the metallic surface. The results suggest that a metal-inhibitor film forms on Al-brass, which mainly affects the cathodic reaction rate.Furthermore, the tests clearly indicate that the effect of benzimidazole-2-thiol is strongly influenced by a pre-existing oxide layer on the alloy surface.A good protection against atmospheric corrosion is reached by prefilming treatment.Corrosion loop testing indicate that prefilming does not hinder the formation of protective corrosion products on the surface of the alloy in flowing aqueous solutions.

Notes: Ellipsometry has been used to study the influence of Benzylamine, Benzotriazole and Hexamethylenetetramine on the growth of anodic oxides on iron and on AISI 304 stainless steel in borate-buffer solutions. On iron, a limitation of the growth-rate has been observed for these substances all over the passive potential range. On AISI 304 steel, when the electrode potential exceeds 400 mV (SCE), an increase of the anodic oxide growth-rate was found in the presence of the organic substances. Adsorption on the oxide film, according to the interpretation given by Pearson, is discussed.
