    Notes: Background. Cutaneous leishmaniasis represents a difficult disease to manage in endemic areas. Systemic treatment is hampered by both expense and compliance. Side effects may play a major role in this aspect as well. Methods. The effectiveness of intralesional treatment of leishmaniasis was investigated. Seven hundred and ten patients were treated with injections of sodium stibogluconate intralesionally. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by demonstrating the parasite in the smears obtained from the lesion. Fine insulin needle was used to infiltrate the lesion with sodium stibogluconate (0.5 to 1.0 ml). Results. Generally eight injections were sufficient, but some of the complicated lesions needed up to 24 injections. Sixty-two percent of patients were men. The majority of the study population (64%) were children below 15 years of age. The results showed that 72% of lesions healed completely, 23.9% showed some improvement, while 4.1% showed some deterioration. Lesions of the lips, cheeks, chin, and neck healed faster than lesions in other parts of the body. Side effects were mild and limited to pain at the site of the injection and hyperpigmentation in those who were treated by folk medicine. Conclusions. Intralesional treatment is as effective as the standard systemic antimonials. It offers a less expensive alternative and a low side effects profile. Our findings confirmed the findings of earlier workers. It is recommended for treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis in endemic areas.

    Notes: A retrospective study of 11,802 patient records with cutaneous leishmaniasis in Riyadh region was conducted during the period 1987 to 1990. The following findings resulted from the study. The incidence rate declined from 244.2 to 106.5 per 100,000 population. The infection was mainly among non-Saudi men in their working years. The Saudis represented 33% of the total number of patients. The Saudi patients were mainly young, below 15 years of age, with almost equal men/women distribution. The non-Saudis were found to have more multiple lesions; 65% of them had three or more lesions compared with 10% in Saudis. The lesions were mainly on the exposed parts of the body such as the face (20%), neck (3.3%), upper limbs (23.3%), and lower limbs (15%). Agricultural areas such as Riyadh vicinity, Al-Kharj, Shagraa, and Al-Koweeya showed consistently the highest foci of infections. The infections were highest in winter and lowest in summer.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mittels herkömmlicher keramikchemischer Verfahren wurde eine Reihe von Proben des Systemes Ni0.65Zn0.35CuxFe2−xO4 (x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 und 0.6) hergestellt. Röntgendiffraktionsanalyse zeigt kubisches Spinell (eine Phase). Es wurden die Gitterkonstanten, die theoretische DichteDx, die RaumdichteD und die PorositätP dieser Proben gemessen. Die Gitterleerstellenkonzentration von Sauerstoff ist ein wichtiger Parameter beim Sintern von Spinellferriten. Die Abnahme der Besetzung mit Fe3+-Ionen bei der Einbringung von Cu2+ führt zu kleineren Gitterkonstanten. DTA-Kurven zeigen einen starken exothermen Peak bei 90°C.
    Notes: Abstract A series of samples of the system Ni0.65Zn0.35CuxFe2−xO4 (x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6) are prepared by the usual ceramic technique. X-ray analysis shows that they are cubic spinel (single phase). The lattice parameter, theoretical density (D x), bulk density (D) and the porosity (P) are measured for the samples. The vacancy concentration of oxygen is an important parameter in the sintering process of spinel ferrites. The decrease in the population of Fe3+ ion in the octahedral sites with the introduction of Cu2+ results in the decrease of lattice parameter. The DTA tracing shows a strong exothermic peak at 90°C.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Natriumacetylacetonat wurde durch die Wechselwirkung zwischen Acetylaceton und Natriumhydroxid gewonnen. Es wurde die Wärmeleitfähigkeit, die Phononengeschwindigkeit, die mittlere freie Wegstrecke, das Elastizitätsmodul und der Wärmeausdehnungskoeffizient untersucht. Die Wärmeleitfähigkeit der Substanz nimmt wegen der thermischen Gitterstreuung der Phononen mit steigender Temparatur ab. Die Geschwindigkeit der Phononen nimmt auf Grund der Perturbierung der thermischen Phononen ebenfalls ab. Der lineare Wärmeausdehnungskoeffizient steigt mit zunehmender Temperatur an, was auf die schwachen Anziehungskräfte zwischen den kleinen Na+ Ionen und den massigen Acetylacetonat-Anionen im Gitter zurückzuführen ist.
    Notes: Abstract Sodium acetylacetonate was prepared by the interaction of acetyl acetone with sodium hydroxide. The thermal conductivity, phonon velocity, mean free path, Yong's modulus, and the thermal expansion coefficient were studied. The thermal conductivity of the material decreases with increasing temperature due to the thermal lattice scattering of phonons. The velocity of phonons is also decreased due to the perturbation of thermal phonons. The linear thermal expansion coefficient increases with temperature due to the weakness of the attractive forces between the small Na+ cations and bulkier acetylacetonate anions in the lattice.

Die röntgenographische Analyse zeigte für alle Proben ein kubisches Spinell (Single-Phase). An den Proben wurde das Elastizitätsmodul, der dielektrische Verlust und die Kapazitätsänderung bei mechanischen Einflüssen gemessen. Das Elektrizitätsmodul sank mit zunehmenden Kupfergehalt. Dies hängt mit dem Fakt zusammen, daß Fe3+ Ionen im Gitter an oktaedrischen Punkten durch Cu2+ Ionen ersetzt werden, was Gitterleerstellen verursacht, die die Gitterspannung erhöhen. Das Minimum des dielektrischen Verlustes fürx=0.3 kann mit der Bildung von Gitterleerstellen erklärt werden, was die Sprungfrequenz weitab von der Frequenz des angewendeten Wechselstromfeldes hält. Die steigende Kapazität der Proben bei mechanischem Einfluß kann über den Mechanismus der Polarisation erklärt werden.
    Notes: Abstract A series of samples in the system Ni0.65Zn0.35CuxFe2−xO4 (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) were prepared by the usual ceramic technique. X-ray analysis showed that they were cubic spinel (single phase). Young's modulus, the dielectric loss and the change in capacitance under mechanical stress were measured for the samples. Young's modulus decreased with increasing Cu content. This is due to the fact that Cu2+ ions entered the lattice substitutionally for Fe3+ ions at the octahedral sites, creating lattice vacancies gave rise to lattice strain. The minimum value of the dielectric loss corresponding tox=0.3 may be due to the formation of lattice vacancies retarding the jump frequency to be far from the frequency of the applied a.c. field. The increase in capacitance of the samples with mechanical stress may be explained via the mechanism of dielectric polarization.

Hinsichtlich der maximalen Porösität dieser Zusammensetzung hatte die Wärmeleitzahl einen Mindestwert vonx=0.3. Hinsichtlich der Phononenstreuung wurde für die Phononenfrequenz ein Optimum fürx= 0.3 geschätzt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mittels einer Keramiktechnik wurde eine Reihe von Proben des Types Ni0.65Zn0.35CuxFe2−xO4 mitx=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 und 0.5 hergestellt. In Röntgendiffraktionsuntersuchungen wurde die Existenz von Single-Phasen bestätigt. Bei verschiedenen Temperaturen und einer Frequenz von 1 kHz wurde die DielektrizitätskonstanteK und der dielektrische VerlustD gemessen. Die ausgesprochene Erhöhung der Dielektrizitäts-konstante bei der Umwandlungstemperatur kann der Phasenumwandlung vom ferromagnetischen in den paramagnetischen Zustand zugeschrieben werden. Die Abnahme des elektrischen Verlustes mit steigender Temperatur kann durch kleinere Relaxationszeiten der springenden Elektronen und Löcher erklärt werden. Für den ferromagnetischen Zustand wurde auch die Tawfik-Konstante berechnet, die in Korrelation mit der Dielektrizitäts-konstante gefunden wurde.

The existence of a single phase was confirmed in X-ray studies. The dielectric constantK and dielectric lossD were measured at different temperatures at a frequency of 1 kHz. The pronounced increase in the dielectric constant at the transition temperature is due to the phase transformation from the ferrimagnetic to the paramagnetic state. The decrease in the dielectric loss with temperature is due to the reduction in the relaxation time of the hopping electrons and holes. The Tawfik constant was calculated in the ferrimagnetic state and was found to be correlated to the dielectric constant.
