    Notes: Abstract It has been established that the covering group of the Lorentz group in the dimensions D=3, 4, 6 and 10, can be expressed in a unified way, based on the four composition-division algebras ℝ, ℂ, ℚ and $$\mathbb{O}$$ . If the division algebras in the construction of the covering groups of the Lorentz groups in D=3, 4, 6 and 10 are replaced by the split composition algebras, then the sequence of groups $$\widetilde{{\text{SO}}}{\text{(2,2)}}$$ , $$\widetilde{{\text{SO}}}{\text{(3,3)}}$$ and $$\widetilde{{\text{SO}}}{\text{(5,5)}}$$ results. Classical superstrings embedded in such spacetimes can be defined, and the split composition algebras provide a natural framework for their description.

    Notes: Abstract By combining the generalized exterior algebra of forms over a noncommutative algebra with the gauging of discrete directions and the associated Higgs fields, we consider the construction of the bosonic sector of left-right symmetric models of the form SU(2) L ⊗ SU(2) R ⊗ U(1). We see that within this formalism maximal use can be made of the gauge connection associated with the noncommutative graded algebra.

    Notes: Abstract The expected equivalent widths of individual rotational lines of the most intense Q 2 branch of the 0-0 band of the A 2Σ-X2Πi; system of S32H and S34H have been calculated in the umbral spectrum for five disk positions using Zwaan's (1974) sunspot model. Percentage abundance of S34 in the terrestrial case has been considered valid in our calculations. Strong lines of S32H and S34H of the A-X band system should be detectable in the sunspot spectrum. The molecule SH may play a possible role as a major opacity source in the ultraviolet spectrum of sunspots along with the molecule OH in the upper layers (up to τ 0.5μm = 1.0) wherefrom most of the continuum arises. Study of this molecule in the umbral spectrum may also provide the solar isotopic abundance ratio N(S32)/N(S34).

    Notes: Abstract We have investigated the rate of occurrence of solar wind phenomena observed between 1972–1984 using power-spectrum analysis. The data have been taken from the high-speed solar wind (HSSW) stream catalogue published by Mavromichalaki, Vassilaki, and Marmatsouri (1988). The power-spectrum analysis of HSSW events indicates that HSSW stream events have a periodicity of 9 days. This periodicity of HSSW events is $$\frac{1}{3}$$ of the 27-day period of coronal holes, which are major sources of solar wind events. In our opinion, the 9-day period may be the energy build-up time for coronal hole regions to produce the HSSW stream events.

    Notes: Abstract The calculated equivalent widths of some lines of SiO in the umbral spectrum suggest that strong lines of Si28O16, Si29O16 and Si30O16 may be present in the sunspot ultraviolet spectrum. We also find that between 37 000 and 47 000 cm−1 the quasi-continuous absorption of SiO dominates all other absorptions.

    Notes: Abstract With the aim of investigating the resonance system of NO, equivalent width calculations have been made for the 213.575 nm, Q 1(31.5) line of the 1–0 band of γ-system of NO for the photospheric HSRA model, and for the line 214.012 nm, Q 1(25.5) line of the same band system for Zwaan's (1974) sunspot model. Calculations show that γ-band system would not show up in the photospheric spectrum whereas a sunspot model yields an equivalent width of 72 mÅ suggesting that sunspots may provide relatively more favourable conditions for the detections of the resonance systems of some abundant molecules in the inaccessible ultraviolet region.

    Notes: Abstract As the isotopic shift for the vibration rotation band is generally much larger than the isotopic shift for the corresponding electronic transitions and thus facilitating separation of isotopic lines, the vibration rotation bands of SiO may find use in the determination of isotopic abundance ratio Si28 ∶ Si29 ∶ Si30. To help identify the isotopic lines of SiO the wavenumbers for Si29O16 and Si30O16 have been calculated with an uncertainty of ±0.05 cm−1. Taking note of the fact that SiO shows strong vibration rotation bands in the spectra of some cool stars the equivalent width calculations for P(40) and R(40) lines of the 1-0 and 2-1 vibration rotation bands of Si29O16 and Si30O16 have been made at the centre of the disc for the model ZSM-74 using two values of isotopic abundance ratio and three values of dissociation energy. The search for the isotopic lines of SiO near 7 to 8μm is recommended in low noise centre to limb sunspot spectrum scans with a view to help improve the isotopic ratio Si28 ∶ Si29 ∶ Si30 and oscillator strengths for the vibration-rotation transitions.
