Notes: Summary A light and electron microscopic study on a surgically removed medulloblastoma with spongioblastic cells was carried out. In these cells the massive occurrence of glial fibrils is a frequent finding. In addition there were observed many cells with abundant droplike inclusions. Those inclusions are formed by aggregation of glial filaments in a similar manner like Rosenthal Fibers. This process is obviously combined with a dystrophic alteration of the cell. It is suggested that the occurrence of these spongioblastic cells in a medulloblastoma is rather due to a differentiation of medulloblastoma cells, than to a coincidence of 2 kinds of neoplasms. This phenomenon points to the neuroectodermal origin of the medulloblastoma.

Description / Table of Contents: Effect of Process Parameters in Extrusion on Fatigue BehaviourFatigue test specimens were produced by forward extrusion and subsequent heading from conventional steels, P/M steels and AlMg4.5Mn. The strain, die-opening angle, temperature and in some cases the lubricant were varied. For purpose of comparation in some cases also specimens were prepared by machining. S/N curves or cyclic deformation curves were determined mainly by stress-controlled tests. For all materials the time strength was increased by cold forming whereby the effect of strain was stronger than that of the die-opening angle. The time strength of steel is less increased by warm (semihot) forming than by cold forming. The fatigue strength, however, is not necessarily increased by cold or warm forming. After cold forming the P/M steels contrary to conventional steels revealed mainly quasielastic deformation until fracture. After warm forming, however, P/M steels, due to the decrease of porosity, behaved almost like conventional steels. For AlMg4.5Mn specimens prepared by forming - probably due to worse surface quality - revealed a lower fatigue strength than those prepared by machining. Here also a feasible effect of the choice of the lubricant was stated.

Description / Table of Contents: On the quantitative valuation of thermally activated material reactionsThis paper gives an insight into the fundamentals and application of the quantitative valuation of thermally activated material reactions, especially of static softening processes. Possibilities of calculating based on diffusion and chemical kinetics are reported not only for isothermal, but also generally for thermally nonstationary conditions. The special cases of constant heating or cooling rates and of constant temperatures which nearly exclusively have been described in the literature follow automatically from these more universal equations given here. For a more precise description of softening processes it is proposed that the ARRHENIUS formula is modified and generalized by introducing a temperature threshold value, i.e., a minimum or reference temperature. This allows the material softening process that independently of time always can be observed only above a minimum temperature to be represented in this way also by the physical-mathematical model. Integrals are calculated and explizit solutions are given for characteristic temperature-time dependences. Finally, the fundamental method of determining the model parameters is described.

Notes: TiO2 and CeO2 are will known for inducing strong metal-support interactions J(SMSI) of a different nature when used as supports for Pt catalysts. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of mixtures of TiO2—CeO2 oxide supports (80:20 and 20:80) reveals at the surface a remarkable stabilization of cerium in the +3 oxidation state; the stabilization is more pronounced with lower cerium oxide concentration. X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements done on the LIII edge show the same variation as a function of cerium oxide concentration, but in the bulk the reduction is much lower. Cerium in Pt/TiO2—CeO2 catalysts exhibits the same behaviour.

Notes: We have used work function measurements (Δφ), Auger electron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction and angle-resolved inverse photoelectron spectroscopy to study the coadsorption of barium and oxygen on tungsten. The experimental two-dimensional band structure was compared with results of embedded cluster model calculations for a c(2 × 2) BaO monolayer on W(001) with barium and oxygen placed on alternate fourfold-hollow sites. Our work function measurements revealed that adsorption of one monolayer of BaO decreased the work function of W(001) (φ = 4.63 eV) to ∼ 2.3-2.4 eV regardless of the order of barium and oxygen adsorption on the surface. Inverse photoelectron spectroscopy in the isochromat mode was used to investigate the unoccupied electronic energy levels of one monolayer of BaO on W(001) along two high-symmetry directions of the W(001) surface Brillouin zone. Non-dispersing spectral features were observed at 0.6 eV and 3.4 eV above the Fermi level (EF) and were assigned to transitions into both barium and tungsten d states in good agreement with calculated densities of states.

Notes: Four pure hydroperoxides were evaluated as initiators for the polymerization of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) at 5°C. These materials were the meta and para isomers of mono- and dihydroperoxy-diisopropylbenzene. Results showed that the monohydroperoxides produced somewhat faster reactions than a control hydroperoxide, p-menthane hydroperoxide. Response to mercaptan level adjustments was good, providing polymer with a Mooney viscosity in the 50 to 60 range. The reaction rate with the dihydroperoxides was slower, but again provided polymer with a satisfactory viscosity. Basic physical property measurements on polymers prepared with the pure hydroperoxides or control hydroperoxides showed only minor differences. It is anticipated that these differences can be eliminated by small adjustments in the compound recipe.

Description / Table of Contents: The interaction of Na-DNS and actinomine in diluted aqueous NaCl solutions is investigated by means of small angle X-ray scattering. Ultrasonic degradation of high molecular DNS yielded particles of suitable length so that besides the cross section also the particle length could be determined. DNS solutions saturated with actinomine have been measured down to a DNS concentration of 0,045 g/100 ml. We observed an extension of the DNS fragments after interacting with actinomine by 18%. The amount of actinomine in the addition compound has been determined: As an average, 7.1 base pairs are combined with one actinomine molecule. Also a shell of counter and by ions surrounding the DNS particles has been found and its dimensions have been determined. From the pseudo cross section scattering curves the inner parts of the cross section scattering curves valid for infinitely long particles could be reconstructed as calculations proceeded.
